Jackpot Jimmy

After a few months of hard work on the boat, the Tradition finally launched this last Friday. I must say, the guys did a very good job on the boat, and it is in great shape and looks great.

Anyways, my dad and I decided to hop on board and fish over the weekend. For the maiden voyage on Friday, we ended up staying local so Steven could make sure everything was running smoothly. We headed down the coast of Palos Verdes, but the water got cooler and cooler as we went. We stopped a few times to find some rockfish and a lone cabezon. Then, Steven decided to head north to find warmer water. The water did warm up, and good fishing was the result. Some nice bass starting coming over the rail, as well as a couple nice halibut. With some fish in the sack, Steven called it a day, and we headed for the barn. Even though fishing wasn't spectacular, everyone enjoyed themselves, and all went home with smiles.

On Saturday, Steven decided to make the run to Catalina. After a good two hour run, we set up on a spot, and started to catch fish right away. The current was ripping downhill which made it a little tough, but we ended up with a few on that spot. The next spot was probably the best of the day. The calicos were biting the plastic very well, as well as the flylined anchovy, light line being the key. At the next spot, anchovies were getting the bass every cast, but if you soaked a sardine back in the kelp, you got a nice quality bass, including one that I got that was in the 3 pound range, safely released after a quick picture. We had time for one more spot after that, which yielded some nicer bass as well. Jackpot went to regular angler Bill Mozingo with a legal barracuda, which were also caught here and there, but mostly in the smaller models. We got back to port just in time for fireworks.

On Sunday, we got out with a nice light load, but Steven decided to stay local, and I'm glad he did. The first spot was every cast, with a 1/2 oz. slider with an anchovy. It only took 30 seconds before I got bit. Afterwards, we tried a couple spots where dropper loops worked very well. Some bass were even biting the sardine. We also got a black seabass, which was safely released, and a couple guitarfish. I also lost a mystery fish that could have been a big halibut. The bass fishing was so good, that we had enough fish by 10:00, and we went down south to try for a seabass. As we pulled up to the kelp, Steven and Morgon saw a school of bigger seabass cruising along, and we made a set, and tried it. We ended up getting a couple of seabass bites and one fish lost in the kelp. We tried one more spot, where I got a couple bass on plastic.
