I was fishing the back side of Catalina Sunday and pulled out this beauty!
We started fishing the East back side around the Vee’s at 6am with squid and were in an area that we knew was holding Yellowtail. There were a lot of boats for early AM.
There was a local guy trolling by us in a small, very old 14’ skiff (with a Johnson 6 hp engine of course) w/ 2 small rods out.
He knew exactly the route he wanted to stay on. Within a few minutes He got bit and was pulled around the water for the next 25 minutes fighting what turned out to be a 35+ lb yellow tail. 30 minutes later, he had the rod in one hand gaff in the other and whamo - over the side with a toad.
He later told me that the bite had been great for the last 3 days and he was catching yellow tail every time he was out.
I was free lining on a Newell 220 w/ 20lb test with a small squid out. I felt a couple of small taps, but not like anything big. I kept letting line out, but didn’t feel too much weight behind the series of nibbles.
I got a few more taps and thought, what the hell, pulled the tip back and set the hook on what I thought was a nice sized Calico – Bingo, the Calico morphed into a 45# white Sea Bass – Sweeeeeet.
It was a pretty open bite. Lot’s of single Yellowtails being caught, saw 2 “BIG” Black Sea Bass caught and released.
One of those perfect So Cal Days you love to see
Topped the day off with a few ice cold Corona’s and a Cuban Monte #3
A friend of mine told me that “the good lord doesn’t hold them fishin days again ya…
Got to get back out this weekend!!
