Went fishing out of Helgren's (Oceanside) last Wednesday with my buddy, James Ryan.
The boat went south, and fished mostly off Del Mar, about a mile offshore.
It was a nice, flat day, and almost everyone caught calicos, barracuda, along with some sand bass and other fish. The captain noticed some boils off the bow, and James threw the iron, with no results.
Later, James tried the iron again and hooked into a 110 pound thresher. (It was never weighed, but it could have been as heavy as 160 pounds). He fought it for 45 minutes on 25 pound test, and it almost spooled him. The deckhands gave him advice, but he caught it on his own. I missed the whole thing, because I was unaware, trying to catch calicos!
It was pretty exciting when it hit the deck, and the whole boat was buzzing. James had it cut into steaks. When we returned to his house, he repackaged the fish and shared it with me and several happy neighbors.
It was a great day. The captain and deckhands were great, and it could not have been a better trip.
