Yesterday, me and my buddy Chase took the float tubes out to Leo Carrillo. The water was cold but fairly calm since we got there around 6am. Action was really slow for the first 1-2 hours with no bites. He was throwing a 5" swimbait while I was dropshotting a Super Fluke and drifiting a whole squid on the bottom with my big rod.

Finally, Chase catches some mystery fish about 6-7" which amazingly tried to swallow his 5" plastic. I hooked and used it for bait on the big rod. Shortly after, I hooked this really big Angel Shark. It easily bottomed out the 26lb Lipper scale I had so he was well over that. It was heavy as hell trying to pull him on top of the tube, you can see how big he is compared to me.

Next, Chase catches a very nice sized Rockfish you see in the pics on a piece of squid. We didn't weigh him but he was fat around 3-3.5lbs

Then, I hooked something big on my small pole with a 3" swimbait. Fought it for like 5 mins and it ended up coming off. I was pissed because it fought like a big Halibut.

Chase follows that up with hooking into something really big with another large piece of squid. Thing took out a lot of line and Chase was bringing him in a little at a time. He fought it for a long time, probably like 15-20 mins. We were anxious to see what the hell it was, especially after I broke off my other big fish, but it ended up coming unhooked before we could get a look at it. Sucks.

Overall a decent day of fishing but really disappointed we lost those two big fish. Oh yea, we had a pod of dolphins that passed within 2-3 feet of our float tubes. One of them slowed down, peeked his head up and looked right at me. Very cool.

No kidding, it was definitely trying its best to bite me. It got pretty pissed when I was trying to pull it out of the water and was thrashing all over. Two thumbs up for The Lipper, a must have if you are trying to catch big fish from a float tube.

Very nice i would be so down to do something like that again on my tube. Thanks for the pics and report i bet you thought it was a flatty 20 feet below your tube lol. Did you see any smelt schools when you were out there that would be sick to sabiki them up and do drifts by the kelp line.

I definitely thought it was monster flatty at first but as I started getting him in I knew it wasn't since it didn't fight like one.

There were random smelt next to the tube near the surface but no schools. Tried a Sabiki rig tipped with squid for about 30 mins between me and my buddy with no luck.

Oh yea, how much do you guys think this thing weighed?

For a size reference, I'm 5'7 and 155lbs. I'd say I'm fairly strong and it was really tough picking it up.

How big were the hooks on the Sabiki i have better luck using the ones with no beads plain white smalast ones you can find. And chum old white bread or salt crackers.

I don't think the hook size was the problem since they were small enough for smelt. I think they were just too spread out, chumming is a good idea, that would have done it. Wish I had thought about that beforehand and brought some bread/crackers with me.

I've fished rod & reel and spear fished that stretch of coast for 32 years and have never caught or for that matter even seen an angel shark. But I hear they can be real nasty and can do some quick damage to you if your not careful. Better off cutting the next one loose from the tube. Great catch dude! :EyePop:
