My neighbor came over and said he wanted to catch a white seabass so I told him we need to go to Catalina like ASAP before the bite fizzles out. Launched out of Long Beach at 3am and headed over to San Pedro barge for bait. They were out of squid but we picked up a nice 1/2 scoop of sardines. (Thanks Todd!) Got over to the island and saw the LBC (Long Beach Carnage) heading towards Avalon. Stopped them and picked up a 1/2 scoop of squid then rounded the corner to the backside. First spot my neighbor pulls up a 21 inch halibut. As soon as he releases it I get bit and this one feels like a barndoor. Got him up to the surface and it turns out to be a 20 plus pound angel shark. Moved on to a few more spots and picked up an assortment of calicos, perch, sculpin, a large yfc, and another 21 inch halibut:Angry:

Saw some birds working off Ben Westons point so we moved in to investigate. As soon as we get our line in the water, in moves this siener and does a wrap on the entire school of whatever was there (YT, WSB)

Needless to say that pretty much shut down that area so we moved on for one last try to a fishy looking spot down the line. After a couple more calicos and perch, my friend gets bit and pulls up a 28 and 1/2 inch WSB!

Not a giant, but the first WSB to hit the deck of my boat. We fished for a little while longer then headed in around 2pm after another great day of fishing aboard the Keilani.

Daylight squid probably.Should've called him up and asked to fish real close without interfering with his work, predators like to hang out where's there's easy pickin's. Nice report

Cool Jeff that you and your neighbor could get out and do some CI fishing.

My question is , Can that boat ( seiner ) do that ? Just drop his nets that close to the U.S. mainland? Maybe I am just ignorant of what is going on. I thought that the seiner were in Mexican waters not the U.S. Could someone please explain?

Seiners can't wrap yellowtail or cbass legally, the boat was probably wrapping mackeral or sardines. You guys relax a little, the bait you bought was caught by a seiner!

Congrats on the cbass!
