Wingnut vs Blackwater - Part 5 (Wingnut undefeated 5-0).

The Challenge & Wager: About three weeks ago, Phuong (Blackwater) issued his latest challenge. A $500.00 wager that I could not hook & land a legal Halibut with a Barbie style fishing rod & reel. I have three trips anywhere in the salt to accomplish this feat. I must provide undisputable proof of the event and have a second party present to verify the catch.

After mulling over the challenge for an entire week, and talking at length with my support staff (Steve - Flyngby & Mike - Bones), I decided to to take on the challenge. The first of three trips to accomplish this feat will start after I get back from the Sierras Parcher's event. That would be today, Monday 6/22/09. My plan was to hit a harbor of choice with Flyngby and make two trips to my favorite surf spots to secure the win. I realize that this was a tough challenge but the thrill of the chase is enough to fuel my determination.

Mike, Steve and I carefully planned the mission and made a joint decision on what area we were going to hit. We took Steve's advice to take his boat to a harbor that his boat has never been on before. Fishing in unfamiliar waters on his boat is a challenge in itself and the three of us took on the task together. Mike is the official record keeper and was in charge of documenting the mission(s). Steve was my guide and navigator and I was relying on him to put me on the fish. All I have to do is catch the fish... sounds easy doesn't it? Anyways, it all looked good on paper.

Blackwater dropped off two sets of Barbie rods (Superman & Spiderman) complete with tackle pack & lunch box and off we went. The reels holds 85 yards of 6 lbs test line. I plan to throw the LC's or Krocs with one and set the other up with the dropshot.

Disclaimer: No fish were harmed in the undertaking of this challenge.

Conditions: Cool & clear morning, sunny & warm afternoon. Water temperature 64 degrees, fishing an incoming tide, harbor water clarity fair, moderate offshore wind. Very little baitfish presence (mostly micro baits).

The morning didn't start out too well as it was tough launching in the negative low tide at the ramp. Steve's truck almost slid into the water as we back the trailer down the ramp. We had to tie ropes to connect two vehicles and pull the truck back up the ramp after launch. It was nervous time for sure! We also had to help another boater with similar launch troubles to get his vehicle back up the ramp.

Here we are improvising at the launch ramp.
http://i410.photobucket.com/albums/pp185/lukesdad2008/DSC00043.jpg

We finally hit the harbor and started fishing it sections at a time. Concentrating on whatever little bait in the water that we could find, which was pretty scarce. It was quite amusing to Mike & Steve as they watched me struggle to get used to the high quality gear. It took me about fifteen minutes or so to learn how to cast & work the rigs comfortably & effectively. I have to admit, I was a little embarrassed everytime other boaters or shore fishermen saw me using these rigs... they would point & laugh, saying stuff like "Hey dude, what's up with those rods...?" :Embarrassed: What the heck, all in the name of fun right? It's good to have a good laugh once in awhile, even at your own expense.

The first catch of the day... this little guy felt like a monster! Good, the incidental catch gave me a chance to really feel how inadequate the drags on these set-ups are and adjust.

Mike nails the first Flat Boy... barely short at 21 1/2 inches.

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut4/Wingnut5/Picture073.jpg

Well, after a couple of hours of relentlessly working the dropshot and nothing to show for it except for a bunch of junk Croakers, I was starting to get impatient. The Blackwater challenge is starting to wear on my nerves.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut4/Wingnut5/Picture077.jpg

Then it happened... twitch, twitch on the dropshot... thunk, rod loads up, swing and fish on!

You have to turn up the volume while watching this video to hear the fish burn drag. I couldn't muscle the fish at all with the light line, weak drag and no leverage due the 2 foot length of the rod. The fish bolted several times at color when it saw the boat and while I was trying to get it to the net. It was quite a battle, my heart was pounding the entire time... But with great teamwork, success! High fives all around.

Video Alert:

My adrenaline was really pumping and my vitals were off the charts. Took me a good ten minutes to finally calm down.
The legal Butt taped out at 23 inches.

Sorry Phuong (Blackwater), victory is mine... again! I felt the weight lifted off my shoulders at the moment I released the fish and realized that I accomplished the challenge in just ONE mission! :Dancing Banana: I promptly thanked my support staff and like any jackpot winner, I split my winnings with them. Mike & Steve, you guys are the best!

Paying homage to Poseidon.

Now that was the most fun I've had in a long time. I thought that catching my PB DD Trout in the Sierras a few days ago was fun, but this really top the cake! Yes, the Fish Gods have been kind indeed!!! :Big Grin:

Mike & Steve, thanks again for your help, support and believing in me while others just laugh and said that I didn't have a chance...

Phuong, thanks for being a good sport... nice doing business with you once again my friend. Awaiting your next challenge.

Thanks for sharing this special moment with me everybody. This one will be stored in the old memory banks for a long, long time.

Damn Blackwater. You must be a bank or something. Now give him an ACTUAL challenge like catching a legal halibut using only 2lb test or something. Too easy.

Great job Wingnut.

"I love You man!"

I'm sitting here speechless! When you told me about this in the Sierra's I was confident that it would take you at least 2 trips and a few break ups with Nessie "fortifying" the drags between trips for you to accomplish this.

This is incredible! Wait until I tell my dad! He's gonna love it!

Arthur,

In the face of odds stacked against you......You always seem to come out on top. This weekend you showed the TEAM 57 family just how it's done with style and commitment. From the trophy Alper trout and beautiful Browns you caught in the Sierras to the defeat of the Blackwater Challenge.I'm proud to call you my friend and today
is a day that I will remember forever. Anyone who doesn't believe in KARMA has never met a man called "WINGNUT"
You are living proof the hardwork and commitment pay off and sometimes......Lady Luck shines upon you!
Right out of the gate it didn't look good for a greylight launch but we didn't give up .....You were so pumped up and it was like you had a sixth sense that something GOOD was going to happen. You were pacing up and down the dock.
Then we rescued that guy with the 26 ft Parker that was stuck on the ramp. We sandbagged the bed of the truck (With our bodyweight) while Steve scrounged up gravel to aid in the dudes traction.
That was right before we used TWO TRUCKS to launch ONE boat safely.....LOL

TEAMWORK BABY.....THAT'S WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT!

Steve,

Thanks for the guide work and commitment in helping Arthur accomplish a difficult challenge. Your call on the "Best Place" to pull it off was right on the money.

What a great day with some great guys.

Arthur, remind me to never bet against you in anything. That is awesome that you nailed a legal halibut on a Superman pole, and I have a feeling that major skill combined with some karma is what pulled it off. That video is a great watch too. Congratulations on that fish, and good luck on any other challenges that await you!

I just showed the video to one of my friends, and both of us couldn't stop laughing. Even though I had seen the video before, the image of a Superman rod fighting a legal halibut is still funny. I am amazed that the drag held up too.

Supernut strikes again,
This is definitely my all time favorite Wingnut Post. TEAM SUPERMAN ROCKS!!! I had my bet on you from the beginning, my bookie hates it too when I place a bet on you. I loved this challenge, how could you go wrong with the Spidey Sense and Superman strength backing you. Your support team was the best, Congrats Gents! Boy what will the next challenge be, fishing with an informercial pocket fishing pole or fishing the R.C. boat, haahaa!
I loved all the pixs with the character poles, and my fav pix was the look down the Superman pole shot. I thought you looked Marvelicious in the shot where you were holding both poles,:Wink:, LOL.
Yeah I would have to say Shakespeare would love the vid of you landing the Legal Hali. I do agree that only Wingnut could have pulled this challenge off, time and time again his posts show his knowledge of being a great fisherman. So will there be a session on the proper use of Character poles at the surf event?
Bones - Thanks for the vid, loved it so much I watched it 3 times in a row and felt the adrenaline rush. Mike said the F word, Mike said the F word, LOL.
Cptn Steve- How could one go wrong with Steve at the Helm.

Cograts once again on another Superb outing and challenge WN. Will be looking forward to the next challenge. Thanks for the XLNT post & pixs.

Or the drag burn up ?

Lucky you didnt break off cause those drags get real hurky jerky !

Hey Art, to be honest, when you were telling me about the bet just this past weekend up at Parcher's, I was thinking to myself, you're screwed. Those rods are made for panfish and trout, not for legal halibut. The line is like #4 or #6 and usually pretty crappy quality and the drag is poor at best. You did it and I'm impressed. For the people who say that you are successful because of your high dollar gear just got smacked in the face. :Pee:

You are beyond lucky my friend and I'm running out of excuses to tell the wife as to why funds are missing out of our checking account. Lucky for me you didn't take the offer to raise the stakes. Where to start!!!!!!

The fact that I was involved in the mission was awesome!!!! Arthur made me aware of the challenge a few weeks ago and I took on the task of being a part of the support team!

I then received a PM form him as things moved on and I was now voted in to take him out for Round 1 of the mission!!!!! We had discussed many options but in the end it was decided to take the Spotted Fever to unfamiliar waters! As the day approached I felt the pressure of putting him on fish at a place I had never launched before! Let's just make the challenge even tougher right!!!!!

Arthur states that his vitals were off the scale while he was on the bendo but no where close to mine as I was sliding uncontrollably down the launch ramp!!! But with a team effort we were on the water!!

Then when it happened I was now on the hot seat again and had to try to net one very feisty Flattie!!!! She was not willing to give up easily and again my heart was also off the charts as it was clear it was a legal at first color!!

When I heard that familiar "YA BABY" from Arthur's lips at the back of the boat in a tight spot I immediately put the trolling motor into high gear to get out in open water but then thought to myself this was not a good plan due to the gear he was using so I backed off and went for the net!!

After looking at the video I now realise that we were doing slow circles as I had forgot to kill the Trolling Motor!! Thankfully we did not run into anything while the Captain was absent from the helm!!!!!!!

The fishing did in fact suck that day so it is even more of an accomplishment by a very Talented ANGLER to accomplish the mission set forth my Blackwater!!

My vitals have still not returned to normal now 2 days later!!!!!!

Memories for a liftime!!!!!

Steve

Look at Wingnut! He doesn't even need a boga grip! I can't even hold those things with two hands let alone a legal with one. You can see the adrenaline about the boat!

Wingnut

Damn Blackwater. You must be a bank or something. Now give him an ACTUAL challenge like catching a legal halibut using only 2lb test or something. Too easy.

Great job Wingnut.
I'm sure that Blackwater's next challenge will be very creative & unique as usual. His challenges are always tough but fair.

Eric, thanks for your words of encouragement up at Parcher's. I told you that I was going to do it! It was a pleasure seeing you again & meeting your Dad.

Oh yeah! Thanks for the "Classic" Wingnut pose with the rod between your teeth while holding the fish! That was awesome!
Ha ha, that's my trademark pose buddy.

Mike, thanks for everything... you were the first one I told about the challenge and you were 100% supportive and on board from day one. When I picked the support team, I first look for people who loves to win... then I look for those who hates to lose. You and Steve are the perfect choices. You did an outstanding job documenting and narrating the event, even though you did use the "F" word. :Big Smile: That day came together perfectly, thanks for being there and sharing that exciting moment.

thats freaken hilarous and utterly interesting at the same time!

great job out there guys!

check out this link i found: http://www.newsobserver.com/news/story/1186067.html
Wow Andrew, that Catfish is even a tougher catch on that rod than my Halibut.

OK Arthur, now don't go trying to catch a yellow with that rod, or you'll really be humbled. Too funny.
Oh no Mikey, I know my limits. I enjoy walking the edge of a cliff, but always careful not to fall off.

You are the poster boy for barbie and superman poles. I suggest you submit this report to their company in hopes of a lucrative contract!! Seriously!!
Something like a Wheaties box... yeah right. Fishing will never be a business to me, once it becomes a business, it's no longer fun. :Envious:

That is awesome. haha. Can't believe you pulled that off. Nice work on the video.. Looks like a legal halibut is no match for superheros.
I couldn't believe it either... but it happened. :Big Grin:

Ha ha... Doing work with the superman rod.
I was just glad that Blackwater didn't pick the actual Barbie or the Hannah Montanna versions.

Laughing my buns off here...

That was AMAZING!!! Only you could pull that off.. Awesome!!

Just goes to Prove... Its not the gear, its the MAN that gets it done..

History in the making!!!!!!

Do you want me to take all the Avet innards back out of that Reel now?? Was hard fitting them in there.....
Thanks Frank, the Carbontex drag upgrade that you put in there worked like a charm!

Great job, which harbor were you at? Doesnt look too familiar to me
All harbors look alike don't they? :Secret:

That is too funny Arthur. Great job man.
Thanks Juan... I'm getting close to pulling the trigger on a kayak.

Glad you had a good laugh Marc, I'm sure that it put smiles on a few faces the last couple of days. The drag was pretty bad, but manageable and barely got the job done.

Very nice accompishment Wingnut! Had to be a fun outting and a challenging day!
We all had a great time out there... priceless.

Standing by Steve...

Great job Arthur,I had wind of your challenge and was confident you would get it done.
And I knew it would be there. That place is still holding.

Mike{bones} pm sent check your in box.

Again great job to all of you guys.Sorry for your loss blackwater.GTF
Thanks GTF, that area is quite productive. That's why we picked it for the first outing.

That was hilarious!!! The halibut didn’t like that net. Great job landing the fish Arthur!!!
Thanks Russ, you need to get out with us soon man.

Some people just don't learn....DON'T BET AGAINST WINGNUT!

What a fun report to read, thanks for sharing your shananigans Arthur...I can only imagine whats next!

TD
I'm sure that Blackwater is devising an evil plan for the next challenge as we speak Aaron. See ya at Legends III.

Nice job out there guys congratulations Arthur on the winnings you deserve it that must have been nervous tho when that Hali was making those scary runs by the boat. Nice to have Steve and Mike by your side for assistance nice net work Steve and good camera work Mike. Thanks for the pics and report keep it up out there.

Bigred
Yeah Lucas, that Flattie took at least four or five good runs. Mike only captured a couple of them. He was searching around for his video camera for a bit. It was nerve racking hearing that drag sputter off the reel. Mike did a great job with the video and Steve was great and very patient at the net.

I nearly choked on my cereal this morning while reading this.
You're too much bro, phoung must have money to burn betting with you. :Envious:
Pretty amusing huh Nhat? Phuong is loaded, has a generous heart and loves to donate to my fishing fund.

On the first outing? Really?

Blackwater Blackwater Blackwater.....OUCH! I feel for you man.

Next parlay for $500: 1 Bigeye dropshotted from the surf......wait, on second thought, don't do it, with Wingnut it could happen!!

Nice teamwork guys!
First outing! Surprised the heck out of me too Rich. Don't give Phuong any ideas now. He is already busy brainstorming for the next round.

This is my favorite thread EVER!

Awesome job guys.
Yeah, mine too!

that is great those barbie/ superman pole always hook up. as always nice read and pics thanks. TT
Those rods are now hanging on my game room walls.

Phuong, when will we finally learn to stop trying to take money from Arthur. From the poker tables to the fishing wagers he's making a nice living off of us. The man is blessed and lives a charmed life. :Envious:
This is one of my all time favorite Wingnut posts, thanks for the great read and inspiration.

Arthur, I hope your luck holds up when we are in Vegas next month for the World Series of Poker! :Big Grin:
Hey Vince, keep betting with me buddy... I promise to let you guys win once in awhile to keep things interesting. Looking forward to a big payday in Vegas next month buddy!

Native Gal
:Envious:
Thanks NG, you always have the nicest things to say. :Embarrassed:
I appreciate your friendship and support. Too bad you & Mike can't make it to the Surf Event, but try to come to the Legends III Event. Thanks for the PM's... always nice to hear from you and what's going on in your world.

Hahaha, that was a brilliant read, Arthur!
It was great seeing you & Gator up at Parcher's Sue. Happy to hear that you finally caught some fish!

theres something about those poles im telling you!

thats definitely the best catch ii have ever seen on one though. congrats!
They do hold mystical powers for those who believe...

That is just too funny even w/o the video (cant view it at work)

Great post and an awesome win to an unbeleivable bet...

Did it seem like that twig of a pole was gonna break under the stress ???

Or the drag burn up ?

Lucky you didnt break off cause those drags get real hurky jerky !
(ha ha ha...just visualizing it in my head !)

Ha ha ha.....superman and spiderman were already cool but you just brought them back into their own !....

I think I want one of those poles, ha ha ha..
this post is cracking me up..

Nice work and a huge congratulation on the win and the feesh.

Nice work to all,
Gary
Thanks Gary, I was actually more worried about the drag than the rod itself. I couldn't really get any leverage with the two-foot rod but it held up pretty good. I was telling myself that if the stress get too much for the rod I could just point the rod tip at the fish and let the drag do the work. That got a little scary because you are absolutely right, the drag is not smooth whatsoever. As you can hear when the fish burn drag that it was pretty jerky. Zip... zip... zip... I was anticipating it locking up at any moment. I was totally elated and so relieved when I saw that fish finally in the net.

Ce n'est pas la taille ou votre poteau, il est comment vous l'employez !
Ce qui ? aucun YFC ?
Hahahaha... I called Rich (Sansou) and had him translated it for me. Right on Cangler! I was really trying hard to get a YFC for you. See you at the Surf Event. Try to catch a Halibut though, it's worth more points!

WTF ? interperter please !
Pretty funny... see below.

:Pee:

Well done my friend and thanks for being patient with me while I was ill up in the sierras. See you in Vegas next month! :Dancing Banana:
Yeah Binh, it was kind of a foolish bet on my part but I'd figured that it would be fun trying. Didn't expect to accomplish it so quickly though. I was really lucky on this one. The equipment does play a big part once you hook the fish. I'm a firm believer that you always get what you pay for. As for you being sick up at Parcher's, it happens bro... I'm just happy that you recovered quickly after I got you off that mountain. Even with our trip cut short, it was still very exciting and a memorable one for me. Look into some cures or prevention for altitude sickness... I wouldn't want this trip to deter you from going back up there again. Does anybody know a good cure or prevention for elevation sickness?

Absolutely awesome!!!!!!! I gotta go fishing with you now....you are the man!!!
I'm only as good as my "Support" team Chris... and they are the best!

When we were having dinner last week at Jack's in Bishop..... about an hour or so after you hooked that massive trout.... I started thinking..... this guy always has "good fishing karma" on his side.....

Good things happen to good people.

Well, now I know that talent and experience plays a role as well....... Congrats on the "win" my friend..... remind me to have a good long talk with Phuong about betting AGAINST you!

Thanks for lunch today..... I can't believe you took a day off from work  ........

SUPERHERO FISHING IS COOL! LOL!

http://fishinghotpage.com/users/tmp3/supernuts.jpg
Thanks Dana... don't have that talk with Phuong yet... I almost have enough for another Sephia.
Lunch was great, I wasn't ready to go back to work just yet, needed a little vacation from my vacation.
Like I've always said Dana... I'm the luckiest fisherman alive!
That photoshop pic is hilarious... Wonder Woman looks so sexy!

Oh god DANA!!!
You promissed you wouldn't give up my TRUE identity :Secret:
After all....This IS a kids show ...LOL

MMMMMM....Wait.......Let me turn sideways....I think my camel toe is showing

I bet you can't see the Invisible man or what he is doing....LOL

.
Mike, Linda Carter has nothing on you buddy! Thanks for being a good sport.

lolz that is hilarious. One of the charter boats I believe its the Spitfire they have one of those trips every year where eveyone used one of those kiddy rods on the boat. You'll probably get Jack Pot haha great job on the buts and I bet you had a lot of laughs.
Geez, I can't imagine hooking anything in the Big Blue on one of those set-ups... can you say spooled "instantly". I wouldn't push my luck any further than a barely legal halibut.

One word, AWESOME!
I second that!

I have really learned alot from you Arthur, including never make a bet with you. Simply awesome report and pics. Congrats
Thanks Rob, see you at the Legends III event!

Arthur,
you never cease to amaze me! thanks for a great read and congratulations.

byron
Thanks Byron, good luck out there.

Alright, I'm done pouting! The check is in the mail and heading for your office Art. I really thought that I got you this time. I even tried to bribe your "support" staff but they were loyal to the Wingnut Nation. I still can't believe that you nailed it on your first trip. You are beyond lucky my friend and I'm running out of excuses to tell the wife as to why funds are missing out of our checking account. Lucky for me you didn't take the offer to raise the stakes. There will come a day when one of our friendly wagers will bring Wingnut to his knees. I have to think long & hard for the next challenge. Until then, congrats on the impressive win and thanks for not rubbing it in too much. Back to the drawing boards!
Damn that was fast buddy, I actually got the check today! Thanks for contributing the Wingnut's future children college fund.
But hey, seriously, thanks for making my fishing adventures more exciting and adding more color to an otherwise ordinary trip.
I bet you're you glad that I turned down your offer to raise the bet to $1,000 huh? Ha ha...
Looking forward to finally fishing with you this weekend buddy... my treat!

:ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL:
This is one of the funniest things I ever saw! I literally hav a tear coming out of my eye from laughing so hard!
From the mind of the Godfather Eric...classic!

Okay Arthur, I bet all of my posts that you couldn't catch a legal halibut with only conventional equipment.
Good one Kevin, you better get back out there again kid. Haven't seen a report from you lately.

That was pretty awesome. Your right the gods are shining on you!! you tha man!

FISH ON!!!
I'll take whatever the Fish Gods are willing to give... no complaints here!

LOL! Are you serious!
and I thought it was hard catching a 4lb cat on the zebco.
Look at you reeling like crazy on that rod!
That must have been a rush!
Quit giving me ideas.. I still have to get one on the surface!

That picture is hilarious!
Yeah Casey, that 1.1 reel ratio is totally whacked! If you noticed, I didn't gain that much line as I was cranking, the drag was buzzing most of the time and I was reeling in neutral... the rush came when that fish hit the net.

where were you guys fishing?? thats awesome im bringing my batman pole next time
We were fishing in the harbor... Batman, that's a nice touch.

You guy's are funny. Good job! On your next challenge you should try to catch a legal hali using the classic Pisa coke can rig

Click here 4 a video>!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (http://www.flickr.com/photos/island_life/3038878129/)
Now THAT is a tough task to accomplish. I'm glad that Blackwater didn't think of that one, yikes.

Great thread!!!! :ROFL::ROFL::ROFL:
Glad to entertain ya!

WTG Arthur, Steve and Mike! I knew it would be challenging for you but I also knew you would get the job done! What a team though, I dont think "Blackwater" knew what he was up against! When you combine the expertise that the three of you have, well, that says it all. Wish I could have been there!
Thanks Eddie, we kinda ganged up on poor Blackwater didn't we? He tried to sabotage my operations by trying to bribe my Support Team, but they couldn't be bought. :Big Smile:

Ha ha ha ha , lol lol lol, now thats funny! my new screen saver!!!!!!
It was a good one for sure... I was rolling on the ground when I first saw it.

Pure comedy but, it's proof good going out there superman do not ride any horses for awhile stick to fishing..haha
Pretty funny stuff.

So I'm just thinking----the color of my Calcutta TE may NOT be the reason I'm not catching
I'll mull it over---

Sid
All in the name of fun Sid, I'm gonna kill some Stripers with Bob this weekend. Hope to see you out there maybe.

It's not the size or your pole , it's what you do with it ...
Perfect!

One of the BEST reports ever posted........:UDaMan:
Thanks man, it was a fun one to write.

Steve
Steve, thanks again for all your help and offering to have the first crack at the challenge. I couldn't have done it without you my friend. I thought that you were more stressed at the net than I was with the bendo. But we worked pretty well as always to bag the prize finally. There was something magical about that day even with the slow start. I had a strange feeling that something was going to happen... and it did. I think all THREE of us willed it to happen and somebody listened. I will remember this day always. Until we fish again, God speed!

Haha you guys are animals!
Look at Wingnut! He doesn't even need a boga grip! I can't even hold those things with two hands let alone a legal with one. You can see the adrenaline about the boat!
Oh man, you aren't kidding Casey, all three of us were totally amped up. I think that we were more surprised than anything because it was a pretty slow day and all of the sudden... lightning struck!

Arthur,
Now, I'm a believer! I've always thought you were blessed with some sort of supernatural fishing powers and now it is confirmed....You are Superman!:Thumbs Up::Thumbs Up:
The whole time I was watching the video I had to feel a little nervous for your netman. I just can not imagine what was going through his mind trying to get that fish into the net. I could also sense a little nervousness in the cameraman as well.
Great job guys!

Here's an idea, make him catch a legal halibut from the surf, on rainbow powerbait, or else with a 3 weight fly rod and a number 18 griffith's gnat, lol. Should stack the odds in your favor a bit more. But even then, you still may lose money, lol. Nice going Wingnut. Way to bring back the spincast reel from the achives, he he he.

Hilarious and entertaining story. We musicians have a non-politically correct phrase invoked at times of "gear envy": it's not the arrow, it's the Indian. Wingnut has proved this in spades.

Great job guys!

From the back of the boat I hear YEA BABY!!!! and I immediately jump from my seat in the front of the boat and forget to turn off the trolling motor and grab the net!! The video kicks in at about 20 seconds into the fight!!!!! The water in the area was only about 3-4 feet deep so it came to color pretty quickly but was far from just giving up!

Yes I did feel the pressure while using the quality net that Wingnut had provided me with on a previous trip!!!!

She did not like seeing the net on the first pass and made a quick dive to the bottom. Round two I tried to make the net look like part of the boat but she was not fooled by that either! So I waited for Arthur to turn her and she was headed straight at the stern of the boat and that is when I made the quick swipe to secure the challenge!!!

You can see by the energy that fish had when Wingnut tail grabbed it from the net and then she was still very active and came free thankfully in the boat and the power she showed while getting some air inside the boat that she was a very fresh and pissed off Flattie and very embarrassed to be caught on the SUPERMAN POLE!!!!!!

The whole time I was watching the video I had to feel a little nervous for your netman. I just can not imagine what was going through his mind trying to get that fish into the net. I could also sense a little nervousness in the cameraman as well.
Great job guys!
Terry, I am blessed with some supernatural "luck", that's all.
Yes, it was quite stressful for all three of us during the battle. You can cut the tension in the air with a knife. What wasn't on the video was the first 30 seconds or so of the fight when that spirited Flat Boy made the first two blistering runs. I was hanging on for dear life. After we survived that first burst of energy, I knew that if the line & my knot held, it was just a matter of time until the prize would be in hand. We all breathe a collective sigh of relief as the Flattie was in the boat.

Hey, don't give Phuong any ideas now Skyler. One thing about Phuong is that he is every bit as competitive as I am. But whatever bet we make, he makes it tough... but fair. I do notice that his challenges are getting more creative and the degree of difficulty is getting a bit tougher each time.

Hilarious and entertaining story. We musicians have a non-politically correct phrase invoked at times of "gear envy": it's not the arrow, it's the Indian. Wingnut has proved this in spades.
Ha ha ha, another good one! I play a little bit of golf also, and the same logic applies. I can never understand why some golfers throw their clubs and smack them on the ground or against rocks and trees because they hit a bad shot. It's like, don't blame the equipment buddy...

hahahaha thats freaking awsome
Yeah, and it was fun too. :Big Grin:

Steve, you did a fantastic job as my "Wingman". :Big Grin: Of course we didn't notice it at the time but we did have to move around a little bit and adjust to the rotation during the fight. That Flattie did fight really well for it's size... but anything feels like a monster on that little rod. I will never forget that exact moment when we boated that fish. How the three of us celebrated, frozen in time... teamwork and camaraderie at its finest.

SIMPLY AMAZING,SIMPLY AMAZING. AND ON ON ON ON.i AM LOST FOR WORDS .iT IS A GREAT POST FOR A BUNCH OF FUN GUYS.
Chris, I'm sure that you and Terry have plenty of these moments too. Congrats on your derby win at Irvine! :Envious:

That's a hilarious story. Way to go, guys!
I'm glad that I can look back now and reflect on the good times... and laugh about it too.

You will always be a winner in our eyes Arthur.....You should have worn a superman outfit and just walked up to the table and laid your superman pole next to your chips. It probably would have screwed up the other players concentration.....LOL

Wow, this post has gotten more response than any of my "Perch" threads. I think my next challenge will involve a Perch and dedicated to the wanna be gangsta "Loser" that inspired it.

Well, in my opinion Arthur, you have mastered the masters and have left that "grasshopper" mode long long ago. I know you could do it blindfolded
