just wondering how many of you tubers have ever tipped over in or slipped out of the tube? is it highly likely?

and do you where your life vest at all times? or stowed in the back?

I haven't been tubing for very long but I can't think of many instances where it would tip or that I would fall in. The most likely scenario I could see that would get me in the water is if I had a big leak and couldn't make it to shore on time.

Even then, I have the ODC 420 which has two air bladders so I think I would still be ok even if one popped.

I have developed leaks in both sides of my FishCat 4 and still made it around okay with only ONE full bladder both times it happened...

I'd put money on the bet that tubes are IMPOSSIBLE to "flip"...

Don't tell anyone, but I never bring a vest ... just a TIGHT nylon belt 'round my waders...

I have so much **** packed onto my tube that I have to really be leaning forward to get it to tip. Which I never have the need to do, so no worries of tipping for me.

I wear my life vest sometimes, but most of the time it's strapped to the tube or in the back compartment of my tube.

Wind is your enemy in a tube especially if your wearing waders and a belt. You can easily flip and become a human bobber. Those donut tubes are known to trap you in the tube when it's flipped. Many have died in this manner. I don't even go out if it's windy. Be careful out there.

I have a 14' kayak so i don't really ever flip, but I can imagine
that if you lean forward to grab something and it happens to
be a little too far, I can see a person flipping.

Never even been close to feeling like I'm going to flip. I've been out on windy days also. Tough to kick, but totally stable.
Never felt like I was going to fall out either. I use the FishCat. It has a "tray" that you attach to the tube after you get in. It's used as a work area, but it's also the "strap" that keeps you in the seat.
I've never felt unsafe on the water with this tube.

Just like anything, you should always use good judgment, think about safety first, I cant see how the tube can tip over but if you lean forward and hang off the front you may fall in the water. be safe MB

Yeah wind makes it difficult to maneuver and kick around......but if the wind is so bad that will flip you maybe you should not be on the water fishing at the time!

I take it some of you have never tubed Crowley, Convict or any of the High Sierra lakes when big winds would pick up! Local winds are easy.

Yeah I have......I was just stating that it would have to be a pretty strong wing to over turn a tube. You want to try some fun tubin you need to do a surf launch and fish some of the OC boiler rocks from the tube. Even fishing the boilers and launching from the surf it is pretty hard to flip unless you launch at a spot with HUGE breakers.

You ain't gonna flip a tube mang.
My humpty caddis ride is half inflate 60% of the time and you'll catch me huffing air into it 3-4 times a day on the water and I still don't tip!

I seen a guy with a flat pontoon bladder one time though! You don't want half your 'toon going flat! :EyePop: I like my safe quadtoon!

The waves at Perris are worse than the waves in NPH!

Waves in NPH? I have never seen waves in the Harbor.....I was talking about fishing along the OC coast.

tacklejunkie

Yeah I know.
I just thought I would see at least 2 foot chop on a windy day in NPH like at Perris. NPh is really calm for waves/chop! I was surprised. Guess I haven't been there when it's stormy yet.
Yesterday at Perris chop made it to a foot just from the 5-10mph wind. I wonder why it does that?

sonarbp
06-24-2009, 01:54 PM
Perris in not as sheltered as NPH. Plus you get the winds that blow in from the dessert....not at NPH.

Hey fisherman from long beach sounds like your cousin knows what is important......can't catch fish with glassess. Smart kid to grab the rod!!!! Trying to launch a tube in the surf is a B*TCH......got to time it just right!

I own 2 tubes, one of which is a very cheap model. I wanted to take my 11 year old daughter with me to Isabella but I was a little worrried about her being small and the high winds at Issy so I took the least stable tube to my pool to see just how dangerous they could be. I had to work a little to get the tube to flip and after it flipped I was able to slip free and get to the surface with no problem. Ev3en when trying to flip the tube I found that it was quite stable. I do not think there is much danger unless you are floating rivers or in high surf.

HEMAN
07-22-2009, 10:25 AM
ok. yeah i was more interested to see how easy it is to slide out of the tube.. the flipping is more geared towards me losing my gear rather than fear of the water. haha

Depends on the tube.
You have some room to wiggle around a bit but they usually have a cross bar or strap in front of you. You wouldn't really be able to fall out unless you were trying or forced. They're pretty stable. My current tube leaks all day man and rides half inflated with three rods vertical in the holder. I manage to stay upright and seated in the tube no probs. Mine even has like a 30" long by 10" wide piece of fabric and that's all I sit on on all day. like a swing set seat! just a strip of fabric.

Good ol $50 Caddis Nevada "Rump Number". Half full of air in the pic below..
I need to sew some foam into the seat or something.
6lbs dry. Goes wherever I need it. Just add fins and life jacket.

My caddis tubes, yes I have 3 of them, are older models. They are about 4 or 5 years old and I wish they had that feature.

but i only been tubin the last 2months so what do i know.lol

Man if have only been tubin 2 months and you have caught fish you are well on your way. The hardest part of fishing from a tube is trying to limit yourself on tackle. I mainly take 2 rods and a couple of small boxes of plastics and jigheads.

If you ever want to try Newport again just let me know. I am more than happy to meet up with you and show you what works for me and where to target the fish.

DITTO!!!
Once while trying to land an Alper's on the Twin Lakes in Mammoth, I leaned forward in my Buck's Bullet and almost flipped forward. I now have a Fat Cat and it has the same balance problem. Fortunately I have a PAC 800 and a Water Master which I use much more frequently.
I recently sold the Bullet and I use the Fat Cat for backpacking day trips only.

I take it some of you have never tubed Crowley, Convict or any of the High Sierra lakes when big winds would pick up! Local winds are easy.

I always take either my PAC 800 or Water Master when I fish these waters. Been out there far from my original take-out point when the wind suddenly came up and started to blow 20-25mph with gusts to 40. That's when it gets really nasty. Fortunately I was in my Water Master but my friend was in his Buck's Bullet. I ended up towing him in. By the time we got to the take-out, he was soaked! He hasn't been out since. You should have seen the waves! :EyePop:

I've seen people almost drown because they couldn't flip the tube back over or get out of their waders fast enough. If you talk to enough guides all over the world, most will have a story about someone who either drowned or almost drowned because the're waders filled with water too fast (even with a wader belt). Over the years I've read many articles about angler's who don't take wading or float tubing with a floatation device seriously. If you've ever floated a river with a guide almost anywhere these days you'll notice that a PFD is required nowdays. That should tell you something.

I WEAR an SOS Suspender system when I fish. I've already tempted fate a couple of times. Fishng is not worth dying over.
Just my opinion.

If you get caught guiding a river trip without everyone involved wearing a pfd you'll lose your permit, insurance, and rep. Serious screwup. I was a whitewater guide and did trout trips in No Calif. for many years. That rule is written in stone.
