In three months, I can start driving my car, an MR2 Spyder,
and I have yet to figure out a way to strap it on there. The
kayak is a Marauder and it's roughly the same length as the
car lol.

CKK, Have you considered a soft or portable roof rack. Kind of like the one polyflakes uses above.

Here are some examples.

Google soft rack for more results.

i had a set of those. and was greatly dissapointed......

i strapped the thing to one of my trucks once, and because of the bumpy freeway ride, one flew away, and the other slipped out enough to scratch the **** out of the truck. befor that happened, i had to pull over and re-tighten them and stuff.....

get a good set is all im saying. not price wise, cause mine were exspensive, but quality wise.

i used to do that to my Honda.
it will work, but you will find yourself feeling insecure at long distances and speeds higher than 60 mph.
you will see the yak slowly moving further and further back at times lol
also, if you surf launch a kayak, you WILL scratch the hell out of your roof paint. best rinse the yak as thoroughly as possible after use in sand.
now that i have a new car, i'm saving up to get a thule or a yakima. no way i'm going that route again!

If kayaking in the SALT water be sure to rise after fishing and prior to loading if possible or as soon as you get home rise of the car or truck really well. Salt water will dull your paint within a few days if left without rinsing and if it is that way all the time Salt Water will eat through you paint in a matter of months! I found this out hanging my dip net on the rear spare tire of my NEW Honda Passport.

On smaller cars, they have tie downs for the front of the boat. Although they look awkward, they may take some stress off the other straps. Might be helpful if you plan on going on the freeway. Good luck.
