My friend Andrew and I decided to take out his dad's boat and do some local fishing... after making some bait in King harbor (Macks and a couple smeltys) we headed over to the hill to try our luck.

We fished cut mack strips along the bottom and tried tossing out some smelt on light line.

The fishing was dead until we started chunkin up more maks and chumming... we were able to get more baitfish in the area and we were seeing short barracuda chasing after our jigs (we couldnt quite get them to take it though). it wasnt long before andrew caught a nice fat 17" sandie (he let it go) and i caught this sculpin (also released to be eaten another day)

There were two times where i let the smelt sink down to the bottom and had too intense battles with some monster down there... one time ending in a tossed hook and the other ending in a kelp hang up :(.... Probably a leopard shark if i were to guess.

I continued on to catch an undersize sand bass and some blacksmith and spanish macks

There was also a time where i left the bait on the floor so long i pulled up one of these..

I let it go figuring they are out of season but if I'm not mistaken, rock crab do not have a season- its the lobster that do... so i guess i could have kept it? w/e always better safe than sorry.

So we totalled out at this...
Me=
1 sculpin (released)
1 sublegal bass
couple Blacksmith
and a ton of jacks/ macks

Andrew=
1 fatty sand bass (released0
1 Skate ray (released0
countless mackerel

All in all, it wasnt really a prime day but for a short session it was nice to get out and get a feel for the summer fishing season.

OH and btw after i posted asking about Mackerel recipes under the Recipes section, I was eager to try some of your guy's suggestions. So i did keep one big mackerel (it was close to 2 pounds ) just to give it a whirl. I bled it instantly, gutted it, and put it on ice. After letting it get friendly with some seasoned rice vinegar and pickled ginger in the fridge over night it made for some bomb @$$ saba sashimi and sesame broiled mackerel for today's lunch.... No joke!

Nice mixture of fish you guys got there. It always nice to be out on the water, no matter how slow fishing is.

Although the crab is not out of season (open all year), I think you still can't keep it since you caught it on hook and line??? I know that goes for bugs, only by hand or hoop net.....
