Mirage 2-Day 6/15-6/17 WSB!LINGS!HALIS!REDS!

It was finally time for my long awaited 2 day Mirage trip! I met up with Hakaveli and Odium and made the drive up to Channel Islands Sportfishing. Got to the landing, got signed in, unloaded our gear, and waited for the mirage to show up...

The Ranger 85 got back and dropped about 7 halibut carcass into the bay

The Mirage showed up fueled up and ready...We boarded, put our gear away, and after a safety speech....headed to the bunk for a good nights rest.

DAY ONE

South Santa Rosa Island

I slept a little longer than I would have liked ...I was second to the last person to get up so no grey light fishing for me today. We Started off the morning with some drifts targeting WSB and Halibut. Only one seabass and a couple barracuda were landed...

The bite was slow so we headed out for some rockfishing...QUALITY rockfishing. We made some drifts that produced some nicer Reds and Chuckleheads. We only kept the better quality fish and gave the "bocacas" the boot

After some quality sack fillers...since the weather is so good the captain decides to take us somewhere special. A place called "JURASSIC PARK"! I've heard of the big lingasaurus pulled out of this spot so i was excited to say the least. The crew advised us to use the biggest jigs we got...I had a 16 ounce jax jig on my line and one of the deckhands tells me its not big enough :Shocked: He hands me a huge jig that must have weighed a pound and a half. WOW...I dont know if i want to hook into a ling that can eat this thing! LOL

The Captain lets us know that were about 2 miles away from the spot so we all come out of the galley to get ready when a military airplane flies over us. 5 mins later the boat is turning around back toward the island...WTH? Apparently the military is going to launch a missle...:Rolls Eyes: there goes my shot at that big lingasaurus... So back toward the island we go and anchor up on a spot about 180 ft deep.

Lunch time! For lunch we had some ground beef nachos...I had mine acompanied by my first Kona Burger! yum!

After lunch we picked up some more Rockfish and headed closer in for some WSB/Halibut drifts which didnt produce many fish other than some rays.

Dinner time! mmmmmmmmm....steak.....vegies...mashed potatoes...gravy...

After dinner I got about 20 mins in of bait n' wait fishing til it got a little too cold...so i just decided to call it a night and get ready for grey light fishing the next morning.

DAY TWO!

North Santa Rosa Island

Woke up early enough for some grey light fishing this time. There were only 2 or 3 guys fishing so i grabed my rod and joined them. Dropped a sardine on the dropperloop and im not getting any hits. wind up...change my bait....make a cast and slow retrieve. When im at about mid water column i get tapped...set the hook...HOOOOOKKKUUUUPPP!!! Feels like it could be the right kind. It was a short fight since it was a smaller WSB...Still a WSB nonetheless. My first! I didnt care if i caught another fish...this one made my day!

The comotion wakes up hakaveli...he comes out to see whats going on and I tell him i got a WSB...really? naw!...really?....checks in my sack....."why didnt you wake me up?!?" LOL... "I did...my WSB woke you up!" haha... Hak grabs a sardine from the tank and soaks it next to me. I see him set the hook hard...HOOOOOOKKKKUUUUUPPP! this one brings him around to the other side of the stern and looks like a nicer one. He brings it up to color and its a Leopard Shark! :Evil: He reties and rebaits...drops next to me again...and were both getting short biters. A couple minuites later I see him set the hook again...HOOOOKKKKUUUPPP!!!! Brings it up to color and its a nice halibut!

Everyone starts waking up and we make a short move for some WSB/halibut drifts. We started picking away at the WSB...we got about 6 and a couple more halibut.

Biggest disappointment of the trip is turning away from Jurassic Park. . . Vic's story isnt as much of a heart breaker as what really happened.

So basically, everything leading up to the plane sighting was about the same. The only difference in my story is, when I pulled out a 16 Ounce Scrambled Egg Jaxjig; Deckhand Dan came up to me a monstrous two pound or two and a half ounce jig. The jig had seen lots of action before, the paint was all jacked up. Dan was telling me about the all the lings that had stripped paint off the jig. He set me up with the jig using a double San Diego knot. After hearing the stories, I was pumped up and roaring to go.

Chilling on the stern with Vic and Hak, Deckhand Miguel comes out from the Galley and tells everyone, "10 minutes till we arrive guys."

Three Minutes later (7 Minutes away from Jurassic Park), I see some guys pointing behind me into the sky. I turn around and see this low flying unmarked plane flying by. Blue and White plane with just some ID tags on the tail. Everyone onboard kind of shrugs at the plane.

A minute after that (6 Minutes away from Jurassic Park), The boat turns around. . . . Captain comes on the PA and tells us the Navy is going to shoot a missile and we cant be in the waters. My head sinks down and I cry on the inside. . .




My highlight of the trip. . . . Poaching Vic's Sardine and catching my WSB on it!

We were on our third or fourth drift, Hak already hooked up his second Hali; about one fish was being brought on each drift.

Vic and I reel up at the same time, toss our dines and head for the hand wells. Hand wells are empty, so Vic start scooping some bait. He scoops a REALLY LIVELY DINE and drops it into the hand well in front of him. He puts down the scoop and looks for his dine; at the same time, I scoop a fiesty dine out of the hand well in front of me. Vic's still looking for his dine, turns out his dine swam through the hole connecting the hand wells and I poached his dine.

I look at Vic and smile and shrug at the same time. Bait my dropper loop and send it on down. Less than a minute later, tap tap tap tap, I slowly lift up the rod (Hak is watching me and yelling at me, "SET THE HOOK!") and I'm on. my WSB starts dragging line off, short but fun fight, and it gets gaffed. Big Smiles on my Face and a big thanks to Vic!! Although, Hak and Vic have a weird look on their face. . . half happy I hooked into a WSB. Hak has a half WTF look, "how did noobium hook into a WSB before me?. Vic with a half WTF look, "That MY SARDINE, A*******!"

P.S. Story:
So, my vacation request for the fishing trip was REJECTED, but I already reserved the spot and put down a deposit. To hell with loosing my deposit, I'm going fishing!!

So I get to work this morning, Park and head toward the security door. I slowly inch my badge towards the badge scanner. Inch by inch I get closer to the scanner, I'm one inch away from the scanner and it still hasn't unlocked the door. /Sweat. . . My badge is now touching the scanner, /no reaction. . . . /oh beep . . . I start rubbing my badge on the scannerand the scanner finally goes Beep Beep, and I see a green light turn on and the door unlocks. PHEW! I still have my job.

I walk into my office and I see a cardboard box on my desk. I'm like "OH ****"! I flip on the lights and look into the box, it's filled with training materials I was supposed to grab on Monday. Scared the crap out of me! I sign in on my computer, BAMMMM 87 unread emails. Ahhhhhh crap. . . . Can't wait to go fishing again!
