Even though I had engagements in the evenings on Monday and Tuesday, I still managed to get out to Vail lake in the morning/early afternoon.
Short report:
Mon. on the lake by 8:30 off by 1:30, I caught 16 Bass, one notable going just over 7lbs.
Tues. on the lake by 7:00 off the lake by 1:00, I caught 10 Bass and two crapppie, largest bass about 4lbs.
Long report:
Monday, I headed out at about 8:30: a slow idle away from the dock as I stowed gear, and got ready for warp speed to the dam. I turned on the nav/fishfinder, to see a nice ledge about 50-75 yards from the dock holding fish. So I circled around and threw spinner bait, crank bait, white underspinner, and dropshot worm. I got bumped a few times but nothing stuck, so (9:00ish) headed to the dam. When I got there I saw Pete Marino and his two clients, all hooked (on a triple hookup). Then I saw Joel, up against the dam, and to his right was larry (Fishbreath) and they were both hooked up. Well it wasn't long before I figured out that everyone was using live shad, so I politely mooched some bass candy from Fishbreath (thanks Larry) and Joel called me over and I fished next to him for a while at the dam. Got my fist hook up about 15min. later. Larry had 40 fish before I even showed up on the sceen and I think ended the day in the 60s. So he called me over to his corner, and bam another nice one, then another. It seemed to slow down, Joel took off, so I checked out shad cove (caught two more) and it was after coming out of the cove(on the other side of Pete now) where I got slammed, the fish pulled of drag and went straight down, then it felt like dead weight so I'm thinking catfish. "wrong-o" it was a nice 7lber. I spent the next hour or so watching Pete and Larry bring in about 10 for each of my one fish. Before Pete and his crew called it a day (noon) they scored me a bag of dead shad (thanks Pete). I continued to pick away at them for another hour and ended with 16 (i think Pete's boat was over 100).
Tuesday I got started earlier, realizing I missed the hot bite in the early am. I passed the same spot holding fish 50-yards or so from the dock but didn't stop this time. Caught up to Joel and his partner at the dam and they were going to town! I still had some dead shad from yesterday and Joel gave me a dozen or so fresh dead so it was much the same as yesterday, just a little slower. I had some problems landing my first fish: first one came unbuttoned when it jumped, second one broke me off, and third one I lost at the boat. Finally, I landed one! The last two fish of the day were 2 very nice size crappie.
well here are some pics,
PS. I apologize in advance for the S#!++y pics. (they really are bad because I was alone. i.e. its hard to hold a fish out far enough to get it all in.
