I am going fishing for halibut soon and one of my friends told me to use a trap rig. He explained how to tie it but I can't seem to get it right. I think I need a visual aid like a video or a diagram. I have looked on youtube but all I can find is a snell knot. I know that all that the trap rig is a modified snell but I can't get the distance between the hooks right. Please HELP.

What I do, and most guys I know do, is to basically tie a short piece of line from the eye of your main hook, and attach a treble hook to it.....

Just tie a palomar knott, leave a few inches, bring the tag line downward through the eye and tie the trap on. Just like setting up for a Drop Shout. It is nest towait until you know the size of the bait you are using to tile the trap on, so it is not too short or too long.

Learn to tie the snell on the front hook with like 40 or 50 pound line. It makes it alot easier to learn. Just practice bro. I tie mine while I watch the tube.

Here's how I rig for the few Hallies I.ve gotten.Using lg hooks and flyline for clarity. Pass line thru eye of leading hook and pull plenty thru , I am short for clarity
http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/pp245/nefarious235/101_0195.jpg
Loop back over hook and hold between thumb and forefinger
http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/pp245/nefarious235/101_0196.jpg
Loop back in the opposite direction and start wrapping over hook shaft
http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/pp245/nefarious235/101_0197.jpg
I only wrap 3 or 4 times. Go ahead and wrap tight

Pass tag end thru loop at back of hook

Wet good and tighten

Pass tag thru eye of 2nd hook to start a palomar
http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/pp245/nefarious235/101_0201.jpg
Make loop of Palomar the lenght you want the finished knot to be

Finish trying Palomar and trim

I use this for all my drifting and trolling setups for Halibut

That's not really a snell, but a nail knot to palomar knot. Should work equally well though. =p
