View Full Version : Lite Line - Big 'But - King Harbor 6-14

Took my little pram for a spin in the harbor today, hoping to run into some bones. Launched at 6am, and fished pretty much everywhere inside and outside. Never found the bones, all got was a few macs. I was mainly fly fishing, but I also had a spinning rod on board.

Around 11am, I was getting ready to leave, so I put out a LC Pointer 78 and slow-trolled it around for one last lap of the harbor. As I was passing one of the shoals, the rod loaded up big-time and I felt a lot of weight. Whatever I'd hooked didn't really run, it just sat on the bottom. It as still fairly low tide, so I was in about five feet of water. I crept up on it, and it took off on a run.

With 8lb line and an 8' spinning rod I use for surf perching, I really couldn't put any heat on the fish. I just took my time, and let the fish get tired. It ran back and forth a few times across the shoal, and eventually I was able to lift it and saw it was a very nice halibut indeed.

By that time, I had attracted a small crowd. A kayaker was kind enough to take some pictures and video during the fight:

I tried to get a weight on it, but it bottomed out my 30lb-max Boga Grip. Definitely a PB for me, and a real blast on lite line.

Awesome job! That is definitely a beast of a halibut, and the biggest anybody has caught from a harbor in a while. Did you release her (either way I don't care) and how long was she?

When I was a youngum, probably 40+ years ago, there was a tackle store down in San Diego that was offering prizes for big species every month from Coronado's. I remember I was fishing with my penn spinning reel and 8# on my dad's boat, and caught the big hali for the month that weighed 27+ pounds. I was really proud of that fish, and your post gave me a good "deja vu" moment. Nice score, and stash that LC somewhere you can't lose it. It did it's job, and is worth more for the "I caught this fish on this" memory banks.

Bob........
After taliking to the president of the LA ROD AND REEL CLUB I was pleased to hear that you let her go. How empowering and respectful of an action!
I met you at the Hanson Dam event and you will forever have my respect. You are in a class by yourself as even I would have had a hard time doing that. I could tell that you were handling her gently and now I know why you didn't get an exact weight or length on her.
That TOAD is absolutely awesome. That's a harbor flattie to be extreamly proud of and a fish of a lifetime.
I am humbled in your presence!
Congrats on the PB !

Here's a few clips that were taken near the end of the fight, which I think lasted around 40 minutes or so. At one point I was trying to land it with a 28" net, but that was just a joke. In the end, the fish was so tired I was able to just steer it towards the rocks where a fellow angler literally jumped in and Boga'd it for me. THANKS LONG BEACH FISHERMAN! I never intended to keep the fish, and thought twice about even hefting it up for the attempt to get a weight. It did swim away strongly. I certainly hope she made it to fight another day.

You have racked up sooo many style points---you catch a world class slab ---that you finesse for 40 minutes ---on 8lb line -- that you then release--then write one of the more understated posts for a catch like this I've ever read---mucho admiration, amigo--

tell me about it sigified what he doesnt tell you is i had to jump in knee deep water to help him with his boga .if you look at the picture you see a guys hands in one of them.he didnt mention me ,thats ok but that was a nice halibut and i didnt mind helping a fellow fisherman.

socalrippin
06-16-2009, 05:49 PM
he explained exactly how you helped him and even mentioned your fnn name on the previous page actually...

anyways, i headed out there today and rented a skiff from rocky point and when i was paying for it i asked the guy if he heard about the 30+ lb halibut caught in the harbor. he says " yeah i heard about it but dont know if i believe it" i told him "i saw the pics and video on fnn so you best believe it buddy".

again, way to go! that things a beast!

Funny that the guys at Rocky Point skiff rentals would say they didn't believe it... I was a regular customer for years renting those Rocky Point skiffs. They still have a few pix of me and my buddies up on their website holding bonies we caught back about five years ago.

If they want, I'll send a few pix of the hailbut to them, but their site doesn't seem to get updated anymore.

Fisherman from Long Beach is absolutely correct. In my first post, I neglected to thank him for the assistance in Boga'ing the fish. I really didn't want to bring that thing on board my little boat, so it made a lot more sense to swing it over to shore and let him grab it with the Boga. He was totally cool for jumping in and giving me a hand!

LONGBEACH, props on the teamwork! thats always a good thing! dont worry im chill, i understand what happened.

BOLDFIN, i was kinda surprised by the response from the rocky point guys too!! i figured they heard all about it, maybe even saw her or witnessed her being caught. i hope they get to see the pics. none the less those guys are really really friendly and helpful, good prices on skiff rentals too.

just goes to show how rare of a catch it was!!

tacklejunkie
06-17-2009, 08:48 AM
That is a rare one for sure. That's a heck of a barn door. Not every day a hali like that is caught inshore!

Yet again nice work man. Amazing fish. Gonna be a while before you top that one!
However from the sounds of it you have been paying your dues for a while now.

What do you use in the harbors as far as flies?
