Got a call from Jeff's german shepherd who said she didn't feel like fishing and I could take her boat spot: no problemo!
Launched out of Shelter at 5 a.m. aboard the F/V Keilani, Jeff's latest boat project. The F/V Keilani is a 18 footer 1964 Glaspar with a nice 4 stroke outboard. Jeff has put a lot of work in to this boat to whip her in to a really nice fishing vessel, and it shows. She's got the high sides, dry ride, deep V (no pounding hulls), a nice T57 sticker, lots of welded structures from Jeff, and best of all, she drifts with her butt out....we never fished the side all day!

Made it to the Coronados after picking up a nice 1/2 scoop of fat sardines, to discover a parking lot of cattleboats and private boaters. Started off on the west side of south island, as there was less insanity. We trolled some Rapalas for no love. We switched up to slow trolling (1 to 1.5 kts) sardines, and as we came up to the entrance of the middle grounds, we noticed a small collection of boaters hooking up. We stopped and flylined for multiple short strikes. Water temp ranged from 58.5 to 62 all around the middle grounds and south island. Clean purple water.
From a fishing perspective, this sardine sums up the frustrations of the day:

Lots and lots of short strikes from rat yellows. We would freespool and let them run and run with line, but when you set the hook, all you got was a smashed sardine. Definately yellow tail, as there were absolutely zero barracuda or bonito around today, and no one on the radio were reporting any either. We never even saw the usual schools of horse macks either.
Around the shallower or structured areas, we would get these guys while flylining:

Around mid-afternoon, on the southern edge of the middle grounds, we chased some birds and drop back our slow troll offerings. I put out a small jointed hardbait and hooked up. While working the fish, several times Jeff was getting short bit. As I was getting mine up close, I noticed really small YT free swimmers running alongside (our day long shortbiters!). No sooner I got mine in, Jeff hooks one up and starts working on it while boats start circling us.

Great weather and boating conditions. All the cattleboats were out and tons of personal boaters. We ended the day around South Island, never bothered with the sculpin off Pukey.

Unfortunately all good things come to an end, and despite my little snafu backing the trailer down a tad too deep (sorry Jeff!), it was an excellent San Diego day. Laughed a bunch and learned tons of tips and tricks from an old salt. Thanks again Jeff for the invite...we'll kill em next time!
