Got a call from Jeff's german shepherd who said she didn't feel like fishing and I could take her boat spot: no problemo!

Launched out of Shelter at 5 a.m. aboard the F/V Keilani, Jeff's latest boat project. The F/V Keilani is a 18 footer 1964 Glaspar with a nice 4 stroke outboard. Jeff has put a lot of work in to this boat to whip her in to a really nice fishing vessel, and it shows. She's got the high sides, dry ride, deep V (no pounding hulls), a nice T57 sticker, lots of welded structures from Jeff, and best of all, she drifts with her butt out....we never fished the side all day!

Made it to the Coronados after picking up a nice 1/2 scoop of fat sardines, to discover a parking lot of cattleboats and private boaters. Started off on the west side of south island, as there was less insanity. We trolled some Rapalas for no love. We switched up to slow trolling (1 to 1.5 kts) sardines, and as we came up to the entrance of the middle grounds, we noticed a small collection of boaters hooking up. We stopped and flylined for multiple short strikes. Water temp ranged from 58.5 to 62 all around the middle grounds and south island. Clean purple water.

From a fishing perspective, this sardine sums up the frustrations of the day:
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk274/sansou/Coronado%20Islands%20June%202009/CoronadoIslandJune2009006.jpg

Lots and lots of short strikes from rat yellows. We would freespool and let them run and run with line, but when you set the hook, all you got was a smashed sardine. Definately yellow tail, as there were absolutely zero barracuda or bonito around today, and no one on the radio were reporting any either. We never even saw the usual schools of horse macks either.

Around the shallower or structured areas, we would get these guys while flylining:

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk274/sansou/Coronado%20Islands%20June%202009/CoronadoIslandJune2009002.jpg

Around mid-afternoon, on the southern edge of the middle grounds, we chased some birds and drop back our slow troll offerings. I put out a small jointed hardbait and hooked up. While working the fish, several times Jeff was getting short bit. As I was getting mine up close, I noticed really small YT free swimmers running alongside (our day long shortbiters!). No sooner I got mine in, Jeff hooks one up and starts working on it while boats start circling us.

Great weather and boating conditions. All the cattleboats were out and tons of personal boaters. We ended the day around South Island, never bothered with the sculpin off Pukey.

Unfortunately all good things come to an end, and despite my little snafu backing the trailer down a tad too deep (sorry Jeff!), it was an excellent San Diego day. Laughed a bunch and learned tons of tips and tricks from an old salt. Thanks again Jeff for the invite...we'll kill em next time!

A different type of fishing style for sure!! We should have stayed inside and joined the crowd. At least you got some nice hamachi sashimi. Way to wear the 'fishingnetwork.net' shirt. Why did u choose to wear it on this trip?

Dean...different style of fishing for sure (slow troll), I don't get to do that often in the salt. I fired the iron for a little bit when the bite was going crazy, got what I think was a strike on a 6xJr blue and white with glow in dark back w/ siwash. Probably a bad choice of lure (should have thrown a itty bitty jig w/treble instead), but that was what was rigged up in the heat of the moment.

Shirts? Don't be a hater cause your fishing hoodie is falling apart! Do I need to superglue the threading back to together again like I did in Mexico? Get with the program and buy a nice white T-shirt for the summer. Jeff's got them available in the FNN Store http://fishingnetwork.net/index.php?pageid=store (you'll need to PM him though cause I don't see any in the cart right now.), or get a nice T57 with new logo here: http://www.57shirts.com/teamshirts.html

Rich, looks to me like Jeff has put a lot of work into his boat and it has to be a sweet ride. I haven't been out in the salt in years but even though it may have been a slow day I think the two yellowtail had to be worth the effort. Great Job Guys.:Thumbs Up::Thumbs Up:

Sure does! Though the shortbites were driving us nuts. Would be cool if our schedules work out and we are in SQ the same time, and if so, we could plan out a langosta BBQ at the Mill. Good stuff.

Jeff's an old salt and has spent waaaay more time than I ever have fishing SD. He's fishy! Crazy isn't it about the cattleboats? I'm of the opinion they actually help out cause they chum it up real nice and keep the fish around....in spite of the fact there is always a couple idiots that think it's okay to run WOT through everyone's drift (referring to private boaters). Those guys deserve some "persuasive counseling" at the marina...

Hey Rich, I like that picture of the yellowtail and that "custom" yellow bait in his mouth!!! Nice work guys!

LOL! The custom bait is a nice Dole Chiquita pattern that Jeff brought along! I laughed when I saw it in his cooler, and immediately thought of the No-Banana-Union guys I like to fish with! Had to take the silly pic...

Nice day out on the water, looks like some good eats made it over the rail...WTG!

Yes sir! You'd have to be a communist PETA largemouth bass eater to NOT like yellowtail!! LOL

Hi sansou,

Nice job on the fishys. Looks like those hard baits worked too ... and the plastic ?!

JapanRon

I was one step away from putting on a little anchovy pattern swimmy and slow troll it, if anything to connect with the shortbites we were getting. If I had brought a lighter rod (like a bass rod), I think casting while drifting would have connected the smaller YT. As a reference, we saw some free swimmer YT that couldn't have been over 5lbs.

Trip out that yellow has a yellow swim bladder!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL...I feel the same way as you Dave. Too much rockcod this year. Let's hope we get a chance to wet lines again. I have a good feeling about your summer Orion trip...you guys are going to have a blast!

Indeed Jeff has put a lot of TLC in to this boat to get her seaworthy and dialed in just right. As for the yellows, I look at them as a bonus on top of a great relaxing day around the islands. You guys qualified for the Masters, so now you need to take the F/V Trolltoon out for some Redondo halibut!!!

Great report guys. How did that sebile work out for you sansou??

Good eyes! It's the smallest in that series. I had never heard of them until I bumped in to a fellow frenchman at Fred Hall. Turns out he (Patrick) is the owner. Turns out he lives about 2 hours from where my family is from. So, he hooked up a fellow wandering frenchman and gave me the low down on what to get. I emailed him since, and I'm hopeful to get something a little more West Coast appropriate (as in patterns and sizes). That's my first time actually using them, and well, it worked!!

Nice job guys. Good going on the jellos. Dam the whole spanish armada was down there.

LOL...yeah, it was a whole armada. We had these goofballs towing a diver from the swim platform (no joke) come right at us super close (across our lines) and shut down their engines right next to us while I had a line out. I yelled out of concern the diver might get hooked....sure enough, my line got caught in their prop, thank goodness the diver didn't a taste of my 3/0. Idiots.

Thanks again Jeff. It was a great day to be out, in spite of my trying to submarine your truck and trailer! I think I went too close inshore on the way home instead of going west around the last buoy and avoiding all the loose kelp. Newb move on my part.

I fish with the Magic Swimmer 165 in rainbow trout, and I have hammered some nice stripers on it. I LOVE this lure!!! I also got the chance to talk with Patrick a bit, really nice and helpful.

LOL....I don't buy in to the whole "banana = bad luck" thingy, but I respect those that do, so I won't bring one onboard if it freaks people out.

Thanks again Jeff. It was a great day to be out, in spite of my trying to submarine your truck and trailer!

HAHA, well at least we gave everybody at the ramp a good laugh.

Rich not only backed it down too deep, but also crooked and one of the tires fell off the edge of the ramp and got stuck. I had to do a pretty bold move and back the truck even deeper into the abyss in order to build some momentum but it worked and we got it out without too much embarrassment :Embarrassed:

Not bad for a newb though, Ive seen much worse at the launch ramp!
