Bassguy and I decided to rent a boat and try our luck at DVL today. We got to the lake about 5:20a.m. and were third in line. They opened the gates promptly at 5:45a.m. Apparently, it's been awhile since the last time I've visited here because I was surprised to see how low the water level was. We gathered up our gear and headed down to the rentals.

The conditions for today sure did not look promising in the early hours, but it warmed up in the afternoon. It was mainly overcast, with cold 8-10mph winds in the morning. The dark clouds overhead looked like there would be a chance of rain. Which would've been bad news for me, since all I had was a sweater. Water temps were in the low to mid 70's. Water clarity was clear with visibility down to about 20ft.

Well, since it's late and I have to get up early for a tournament tomorrow I'll just give a quick rundown of todays outing. We decided to make the long run to the West Dam and start from there. Bassguy opens it up by bringing in the first fish to the boat. Not long after, I am bendo on a good fish. I get it to the boat and start the day with a toad DVL bass. From there, the action was fast and furious. A couple double hookups here and there, and we continued to bring some hard fighting DVL bass to the boat at a steady pace. By 11:00a.m., we had a total of 28 bass between us.

At noon, the sun was out and the wind died down to a slight breeze. Unfortunately, the bite slowed down as well. So, we decided to make a run to the quarry wall. I manage to catch one here. Bassguy hooks a toad, the fight is on, but the fish gets the upperhand by snapping his line. You'll get her next time bro. With no more action at the quarry wall, we decide to hit up a couple more spots. At 4:30p.m., our trolling motor battery ran out of juice so we decided to call it a day. We caught 40 fish between us. All fish were caught dropshotting in 20-30ft. of water. There was no predominant color today as it seemed like the fish bit on every color we threw at them. Here are some pics of the day from my camera. I'm sure Bassguy has some to share as well.

Daryl, pretty much covered all the details. Weather made it difficult to stay in one area to fish. Also, at times the wind would push the boat so fast, we could barely reel in our line before the boat passed where we casted to. As Daryl noted, when we had a slight to medium breeze, the fish we're much more active, no wind the fish had lock jaw.

As for the fishing, it's not often I fish DVL with Daryl, and he doesn't out fish me 2 to 1, but today we caught equal numbers of fish, and had a great day at the Jewel. For myself, with only fishing DVL 5 times, the normal spots that worked before, are no longer accessible due to water levels. Luckily we made some good guesses on locations and found fish.

As for the one that got away, I would like to have another try at that one. We saw it jump, and said holy %$&, then she snapped my line. Not sure how big it would have been, but it would have been a new PB.

The day had a couple of firsts for me. It was the first time fishing in CA, that I had a 20 bass day. Second, I have never had a double hookup with any of my fishing buddies, today we had 2, now that was cool.

As always, Daryl, it was a pleasure fishing the Jewel with you. The day was awesome, we had some good laughs and a great time. Look forward to next time, and good luck in your tourney today.

You and your friend got some nice size pigs there. Glad you got time away from your "new ride". I thought you were busy "pulling all kind of cables, nuts and bolts" from the boat.:Big Grin: Anyway, good job on the lmb, can't wait to go there soon to test out my new set up : Shimano cumara with the "Core":Embarrassed:

Actually I really like the Calais 100, hopefully I'll add it to my arsenal soon  and after that I would very much like to test it out by catching one lmb like the one in the first pic. Anyway, how is the boat? is it ready for some action yet?

Yeah, the Calais is a sweet reel. As for the boat, I just started cleaning up some things in it. That wiring looks intimidating. LOL. Hopefully soon.

Awesome fish, great report. It's a shame we can't launch our boats at DVL. I really miss fishing that lake. Just can't justify getting a rental when I have a perfectly good boat sitting in the garage.
