Well....I finally bought myself ANOTHER digital camera after toasting my SECOND one in the surf and I had to test it out. I had a few hours before I had to meet with a few clients and I decided I would hit up the rocks for a quicky. When I arrived the conditions were not so favorable. Cloudy .....Cold and a steady 8 to 10 out of the west. Usually the wind in this spot doesn't come up until noon or so but it was 9am and it was already wind chopped. I really dislike dropshotting in the wind but what the hell. So I armed myself with my White ice superfluke and smelly jelly and increased my weight to fight the wind. One cast to the same spot that Flyngby got his first fish on wednesday and Wham....Fish on!
So a shortie hits the rocks at 21 1/2" but it was a nice start. Over the next 45 minutes I stuck another two that were clones of the first and missed many more rat taps (Probably croakers).

http://i410.photobucket.com/albums/pp185/lukesdad2008/DSC00015.jpg

Now that I look at the tape on the third shortie it might have went just at the 22" mark but the tape is kinda curled.

http://i410.photobucket.com/albums/pp185/lukesdad2008/DSC00016.jpg

A few minutes later I feel that tell tale thump again and I dip my rod tip....wait for it to load up and wham......Fish on!! and I can tell this is a slightly larger model.
She taped out at about 25" (damn curly tape!)

http://i410.photobucket.com/albums/pp185/lukesdad2008/DSC00017.jpg

About 15 minutes later I heard a voice over my shoulder say "There is someone here"
I look over my shoulder and see a guy heading down the rocks towards me and he askes how I'm doing. I told him ok and he askes me if I've had any luck. I promptly reply "Just three shorties". I don't know why but I asked him if he has heard of the FNN and he told me that he was a member. He goes by Got to Fish (forgive me if I got it wrong dude) because I'm a little brain dead today...LOL

So...We start to BS and fish when I get hit again. Once again I can tell this is a larger model and when I get her close my new fishing partner for the next hour was so kind to rock hop and save me the hassle of the lipgripper and he tailgrabs her for me. Thanks bro.....That was very kind of you.
So we lay her out quickly and tape her out at a solid 26 1/2"

http://i410.photobucket.com/albums/pp185/lukesdad2008/DSC00018.jpg

Back in the drink she goes and I'm running out of fishing time!
So I have my bluetooth on and TECHNIQUELY I'm working when I get a call from my sales manager with a serious customer problem so I take about 15 minutes to sort it out and then walk back to the edge of the water to finish up the morning.
After my third cast my phone goes off again and it's a customer who needs some parts. I take his order and no sooner than I hang up with him...I get hammered right in front of my toes in about 1ft of water and she is the biggest of the day. Once again my new partner is kind enough to hop over and assist me by tail grabbing her. I say "What do you think? .....maybe 30? " He says "Looks like about 27" and sure enough he was right on the mark!

http://i410.photobucket.com/albums/pp185/lukesdad2008/DSC00019.jpg

At this point I'm feeling really kind of guilty because this dude is being so helpful but I'm having a serious run of luck. He said that he thought it was the bait and scent combo I was using but I told him that I believed it was just blind luck. My casts were just landing in the right spots. That being said....I asked him if he wanted to keep the big girl because I had some clients to visit in the area and he promptly replied "Sure". I then also gave him a few baits and a small jar of smelly jelly and wished him the best of luck.
He thanked me for the fish and told me that he and his son will really enjoy the fresh halibut.
All in all....A very enjoyable few hours in the morning!

Fish count......

2 shorties
1 just legal
3 slightly larger models (25" to 27")

Oh ....and of course....I called Wingnut and slightly rubbed it in while he was working hard as usual....LOL

Mike,

Blind luck my @##! You know what you are doing! If any one was to have blind luck it was me when I went to that spot due to being bored at my usual spot and needed the challenge to expand my horizons!

Glad to see it bust open again for you as I was feeling guilty about poaching the spot earlier in the week! Glad to see I did not scare them all away! I even felt guilty after you dropped every thing and double timed it up there to meet me only to arrive to what looked like even better looking conditions and the bite had shut off!:Big Grin:

It was nice to hear your message that at least you got a few pancakes and you excitement that you picked up the Spottie even though it was a thumbsucker! :Big Smile:

I vote you had a better day than I!!!!!!:Applause::Beer Toast:

Great report and pics!

Congrats on some "Way Past Legal Flatties"

Must be nice that you and Steve can fish the spot while I'm stuck in the office. No biggie, I've been busy all week preparing and gathering my arsenal for the next challenge with Blackwater.
Damn Mike, you're pulling away from me again on the legal Butt count.
I'm hoping that the conditions will be somewhat decent when we hit the surf on Sunday... my ONLY day off! :Envious:

I can't believe that the halibut action is going off and I am stuck at home sick. Mike, you are one seriously talented halibut fisherman. In one session you beat my PB and total legal count for the year. Good luck to you and Arthur on Sunday, and I hope to run into you in the surf sometime!

Hey Arthur,

Do not be discouraged as we left some gaps this week that you need to fill in you quest against "Blackwater"

The way I see it is that the slots that are open are a 23", 28", 29" and of course even bigger from that spot as they are definetly there Buddy!

Ha ha, thanks Steve, but we're heading in another direction tomorrow morning. We must let the Flat Boys at the spot rest & recover after the Flyngby & Bones assault. Hopefully, we'll hook up and do some fishing after I get back from the Sierras next weekend.

Mike... 4:00am, be ready!

Steve......Bigred and I recond alot of new spots and found some serious bait. We have a sick plan for a night time assault for some Big WSB and we saw a serious batray over 100 lbs. We also found a spot where the locals have been catching very nice leos on Kroc's.

I hope you feel better Marc. I have a daughter with asthma.....I know how scary it can be.
We will slay down at your prime spot soon. Thanks for the compliments.

The only restrictions are that they have to be 22". A word of caution.....don't keep a 22 incher. I kept a 22 1/4 incher one time and it shrank to 21 1/2" by the time I got home. My roommate was calling me a poacher for three days....LOL
I NOW will only keep a flattie that is 24" and over.
As far as the line goes.....Flatties are not line shy. I use 12 lb Green P-line on my baitcaster and 10 lb p-line flouroclear on my spinning setup.

Thanks G-boy but my dad died in 1998!

Nice... Good job Mike!

Thanks Eddie......When you and your lady want to experience some salt water fishing just give me a call. Thanks for the deal on the new float tube fins also dude.

Thanks, I should be completely fine by next weekend. It definitely was startling as it had never been that serious a problem, and I had done similar stuff before without any difficulties. I am looking forward to the trip!

What a day! Is it possible that fish 1 and 3 are the same? I was looking at the spots and they seem like they could match up. Way to slay em.

Lets see the differences not bashing at all.

Looking at the 3rd pic it looks like my clients fish still has the line going in the mouth and also a little ruff mark on the top tip of the back tail. Looking at the first picture again my clients fish has no line in it's mouth with no ruff mark in that case it would have to be a diff fish since there is a ruff mark with the hook in the mouth and none with the hook out. There are a lot of spots that look a like esp the white spot right under the top fin but then you look at the first pic in between the 13 and 14 inch mark above it a little bit. there is a big mark and the 3rd pic there is no big mark near it at all. In this case these are twins Order!!!! Order!!! I rest my case. :Smash:
