Looking For Some Snappy Barracuda

Hi there guys,

1) Tuesday’s Report

Went on yet another ½-day-trip on the Southern Cal, out of Pierpoint Landing to fish local waters up along the Palo Verde coast with 8 anglers for Calicos. Went on the pm run. Colin was the skipper, while Ryan decked, Ed did galley duties, and Alex was working 2nd deck.

Note: Countdown Done: WSB limit is now 3 fish per angler. Minimum length is 28-inches from nose to tip of the tail. Alternate length is 20 ½-inches. See Asides

Note: Countdown 2: Next countdown will be when the Sand Bass are expected to show in substantial numbers. According to my past 2 years records…. (and looking at water temps) It’s about [font color=red]a week till we can start fishing for them in a ‘gold-rush’ atmosphere.

Target Fish:Calicos and WSB

Short Report- Tuesday 06/19

8 anglers, including yours truly, caught 41 legalCalico Bass, 1 nice Sheephead, 1 Rockfish, and a bunch of Mackerel. Also a short WSB netted and released on our PM run. AM run had 12 anglers and caught 109 Barracuda.

(Please widen your view to fit monitor if word-wrap looks off)

06/19 Jackpot

The winner of the PM jackpot was just a 2lb Calico bass and nothing outstanding so no pictures called for in my opinion. Good job on the jp Juan.

The AM jackpot was won with an 8lb Barracuda. A good number of the cuda were caught on iron. Black and white and …..just about anything else. I was told …..yo-yoing just off the bottom did the trick.

Out the LA Light
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h313/tsurikichi/FROM1229/FROM0422/0619widrealougat.jpg

As we didn’t need to get bait, we headed straight out from the dock, past the LA Light and north. Took an hour to hit our first spot from the breakwater. Passed a lot Pbers and a number of moo-moos too! Looks like the PV coast will be savaged by a spate of over-fishing for a while due to an article that was in the Sunday newspaper’s sports section focusing on Palo Verde and it’s WSB population.

Wonder how the guys that volunteer their time and effort to foster the local WSB fishery are taking the news! Not well I suspect.

2 Rounds

First Stop
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h313/tsurikichi/FROM1229/FROM0422/0619widfirst.jpg

Round 1. Moved in really close to the kelp where most live-lined Anchovies for a while but most soon turned to fishing swimbaits for the Calicos. Caught a few good sized legals. With all the boat traffic, I was wondering if the whole area was not turned upside down. Moved around 20 minutes to our second spot after fishing for a couple of hours. Darn the uphill current anyways.

A little South
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h313/tsurikichi/FROM1229/FROM0422/0612widftstoprel.jpg

Round 2 To be honest, we pretty much fished our second and final spot the way we fished the first. Lots of short biters, fish in hugging the kelp, and hungry dinks! We did have a couple of Barracuda follows but got no love from the gars. I suspect we would have done a lot better if there had not been so much traffic …. 7 moo-moo within sight!!

For more details on how the kelp was fished ….. at least by me anyways, I put some effort in describing it in detail in the ‘Plastics’ fishing section.

Conditions: Please check out the weather graphics for the overall conditions.

Skies were clear and sunny. Air temp stayed in the 60º~70ºs during the fishing day. Constant breeze made things feel cool. Lite Jacket felt good while on the move.

Tweeking Plastics #31

Give me a couple of weeks ….. got a couple of ideas.

Plastics

Good Day

My Fishy ………......................................... ............... Blam’s Worked!
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h313/tsurikichi/FROM1229/FROM0422/0619myfishy.jpghttp://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h313/tsurikichi/FROM1229/FROM0422/0620barrplast.jpg

Reds Prevailed

In short, I caught a good number of keeper and a few short Calico. Fished nothing but blams after making about 30~40 casts with a fast rotation of Kalin, BG, and FT swimbaits. Color of choice on the blams was deep red/clear but with heavy silver sparkle. Used red 1/4oz leadheads and wished I had brought my 3/16oz. Could have used those to keep my plastic topside longer. Casts had to be accurate andyou had to make an effort to keep your plastic as close to the surface as possible. If you haven’t fished the kelp much and am interested in my take ….. read on.

Fishing Outside Kelp Lines on Moo-moos
I’m starting to like fishing the kelp. The only thing one has to remember is that you must accept both losing leadhead/swimbait combinations and fishing time when you’re 1) hung up on a patch of the ever-changing line of kelp 2) those sneaky submerged kelp stringers, or the craggy bottom! Guys fly-lining a finbait lose 20 cents for a hook but me … it’s the swimbait + leadhead (painted w/google eyes) + the oval split-ring + 5 feet of 20lb-test fluorocarbon + high-end swivel = $5 … yea I know I’m cheap but…….. lose three or four setups in 2 hours fishing ….. it adds up! Now … if you add losing a good stretch of braid through no fault of your own and ……… ha ha ha

The ever-changing kelp line is a real challenge when first encountered. On a moo-moo you can’t just stick to a spot and drop down your offering but with the size of the boat and its large profile …. one will swing at anchor….. as the current and wind dictate. Gotta remember that fishing is often in the 35 to 70 foot range and water tends to move quicker or at least flow or not flow to conform to external influences to a greater degree than open water!

Targeting Strategy
Along the very edge of a stretch of a kelp bed there is a ‘dark’ area which is surely a combination of shadow and also an indicator of the thickness of the kelp mat (ambush cover) at that point. These are top choices as targets. A secondary choice are the targets of opportunity …… where one might see a big fish boiling in comparatively open water. I say big fish as ….. with practice, you’ll want to and be able to identify your quarry by size too.

With the arced-swing of a moo-moo at say a 90 degree sweep and the kelp line not being in a like arc-shape, the distance between the spot you yourself are casting from and the edge of the kelp you are trying to cast to changes by the second!! To make things even more interesting (seriously) is that there are holes and indents in the kelp line. These are the very spots that consistently hold an awaiting fishy. Yet …. They are the most difficult to hit with a cast ……. and ……. get out of if there are no takers!! It pays to keep in mind just how much time you’re going to be able to keep your bait in the ‘zone’ on a given swing of the boat. When you really get with it ….. you’ll be able to anticipate how others lines are going to lay when you have to make your retrieve. At least that’s my experience in the last few visits to the PV kelp beds/lines.

As with many things in life …. timing is everything. Some guys just annoyingly blindly cast …… not wanting to, or more commonly not having the skill/practice/patience to wait till they find an optimum target. Others are good enough at casting they can just about hit where they want whatever … that I ain’t!! Me … I take my time, make adjustments for skilled/conscious anglers around me, anticipate the best time to cast, and let ‘em fly …… with purpose.

Keeping it Fun
A last word on fishing the kelp with plastics on the moo-moos. Many guys will live-line baits with either no weight or 1/4oz sliding egg sinkers. Work with the knowledgeable anglers who watch their lines and aren’t selfish louts ….. whatever their fishing methods. It doesn’t take much effort to fish plastics around them … as you can easily do so with a little practice. With light loads (10~20 guys), which incidentally fills up the stern of most moo-moos, fishing plastics is easy. With a packed boat, you may have to simply get with the program and live-line or if you’re lucky (and very successful) you’ll have guys switching over from live-lining to plastics or guys around you will be fishing plastics in the first place! Ha ha ha

Tuesday’s Conditions

Fishing Grounds: Check pics and stats!!

Wild Creatures: Saw some Sealions, Cormorants, Pelicans, and Seagulls. A couple of pesky birds were caught from their own greed but most pretty much stayed away until it was time to clean fish.

Asides

Aside: Know what CPFV Stands For? Probably don’t care …. still. It stands for the collective group known as California Passenger Fishing Vessels. Know what the CRFS Is? Still don’t care huh?! It stands for the California Recreational Fisheries Survey. Now that’s something to know! Don’t be surprised if a CRFS sampler shows up on board a charter, moo-moo you are riding, or at the dock to take some key data concerning your fishing habits and catch.

These samplers are there to get the data straight ….. hopefully for we ANGLERS’ benefit. For further info on the program, go to http://www.dfg.ca.gov/mrd/crfs.html. Seems like it would be a cool part-time job for young people going into related fields.

Another Aside:

Handicapped/Disabled Anglers

WARNING !! This aside is a bit long

For an everyday fishing excursion on a public, open-party sportfishing boat, it is highly recommended that the disabled/handicapped angler be of adult age. At the risk of appearing condescending to community members, It is also suggested that an able-bodied fishing buddy also accompany the moderately disabled angler (utilizes wheelchair or walker) if new to sportboat-fishing. Limitations disassociated with a handicap or physical disability issues, such as small stature or limited strength preclude my recommending that kids be brought on board to fish.

Landings:

Southern California public sportfishing landings, as I assume all brick & mortar retail businesses in California are mandated to do, have handicapped vehicle parking, specially designed restroom access and facilities, and reasonable access to tackle shop/ticket offices. Note: Landings and the docks or piers facilities they utilize are not necessarily under their control and or managed by the same operators.

In the real world, the design, degree of functionality, convenience of handicap accommodations, and operational responsibility may vary by landing.

ï‚· Close handicap parking and wheelchair access to the tackle shop/ticket offices is excellent. As to be expected, distance from vehicle to office will vary widely. (Curbs are rounded and or sidewalk access points are marked clearly consistently.)

 Restrooms will have accommodations for the handicapped/wheelchair bound anglers but in practice ….. the location, maintenance, and operating hours of the facility may vary.

 Tackle shops and ticket office access is uniformly excellent with sloped ramps, island cut-outs and such. Once at the office, you won’t find automatic door at most places and don’t expect any portion of the counter’s height to be altered to a wheelchair-bound patrons’ level at most facilities.

Honestly, the ticket offices that dispense tickets through a window, from the oft as-yet closed office to the outside of the building, is usually a hassle to those who have to remain seated in a wheelchair. Not a perfect system but most find it ….. a minor inconvenience. Again … these places are not the Mall.

Docks/Pier Facilities:

As stated above, the dock and pier facilities may be managed and maintained by an entity other than the operator of the sportfishing landing. Although to a lesser degree now, docks and piers are sometimes operated by a city, county, or state entity rather say …. leased by the landing.

From the standpoint of the handicapped angler, we now, in general, take a step down in the level that the angler can expect to be accommodated. This is not necessarily due to the intention of the landing’s ownership, dock’s ownership or associated personnel. A very few docks and piers, by their very nature, are old and pre-exist the landing facilities. These few facilities somehow don’t seem to be subject, as yet, to the latest upgrades for access by the handicapped. God .. I hope some wannabe-martyr, cum-zealot doesn’t make it their life’s goal to start a stink!!

I digress. Access to the dock (where the boat is tied up) from the landings’ office, via a dock ramp, is normally a simple matter. Don’t laugh! It is often the case that the degree the dock ramp slants depends on the height of the tides. The lower the tides, the greater the slant …. which in the worst case ……. may require an angler to get assistance from the landing or more likely the boat personnel to get back up the ramp after the trip.

Boats

As you might expect, getting on and moving about the boat requires a little extra effort.

Boarding: The next order of business is to get on the boat. There are basically two types of deck types. Most sporties have a flush deck where you can step up 5 or 6 inches from the dock, through the transom, up to the deck. Another type has the angler stepping over a half-height transom or gunnel and down to the deck. Whichever configuration, with the help of crew, the crew can help to safely put the angler on deck. Of course, that’s somewhat dependant on the extent of an anglers disability. Some boats with decks high off the water line require the angler to negotiate a portable stairs with 3 or 4 steps before getting on deck and this proves too difficult a combination for some. This is just another thing that the angler must ask about upon calling a landing for information and or a reservation.

 It is worth asking the landing/office if you would be allowed to board before others … once the crew is there ….. and the boat is ready for boarding. This is often at the skippers discretion but it’s worth a try. This will allow you to place your tackle box/bag and rods in an easily accessible spot near your fishing spot and avoid the crush.

 Access to Galley and Heads: Again some boats have been designed with a flush deck so that one can access both the galley and the heads while sitting in a wheelchair. Unfortunately some boats are designed with the galley down below or the sundeck up above .. Duh ! …… so access would be more difficult. That’s ok … the cook will take care of you once he or she knows you’re on board. Some of the boats I go on have support handles in the head …. because I made a swquak! ha ha

 Rod Racks and Bait Tank: As mentioned, try to find a place for your stuff so that it is easily accessible and where some dolt can’t just pile their stuff over yours. The bait tank troughs/wells are usually low enough that even those adults in a wheelchair can get bait themselves.

 Fishing Spot at the Rail: Normally, guys in wheelchairs get to the ticket office early enough that they can get a spot that is easily fished …… generally the stern. Better for other anglers too! The following are some tips concerning how to make a days fishing comfortable and successful:

Hints and How-to’s

Landing/Facilitiy/Boat:
 If a landing indicates it would be difficult for certain disabilities to utilize their infrastructure … believe them.
 There may be a difference in a given facility between …. typically …. very early morning and the rest of the day. Don’t hesitate to ask! Ex: Restroom access!
ï‚· Find a boat that has lots of deck space and wide walkways. Lots of stern space a plus.
ï‚· Pick a boat that has a crew, especially a deckhand, that will work with you. Tip him or her well.
 Search out a boat that doesn’t rotate so you can fish the same spot. If not …. find a boat with light loads as some boats that normally rotate …. will not always do so if there are few anglers.

Other:
 Go with a buddy …. at least the first few times …… especially on a boat new to you!!
 Fish on a week-day that consistently has the lightest loads. If the load is light enough … and the ticket guy is kind …. he or she might keep an empty space between you and other anglers for extra room.
 Target the low-key species such as bass and Sculpin until you get your feet wet …. so to speak! Nobody wants to see someone in a wheelchair or walker trying to do the tuna shuffle!!
 Choose an outfit, fishing gear, and a method that will not tax your strength….. over a days fishing.
 Learn how to fish a certain spot….. you’re learning curve will be steeper and things will be easier.
 Carry some of your basic stuff with you to the rail so that you don’t have to go to your tackle box to get a hook, sinker, etc.
 I would suggest pre-tying some setups and or rigging you’re outfits but everyone has their own ideas on preparations.
ï‚· Have a rod holder for the rail, a few mini-bungie cords, or velcro straps to keep stuff in place.
ï‚· Make friends and have fun. Interesting how a boat deck tends to level the playing field with real anglers!

Telling it Straight: In the end, a little bit of research on boats, a sincere effort to work with a boats’ crew, and promotion of friendships with fellow anglers will make the handicapped or disabled angler …. not just tolerated or a difficulty to be dealt with but ….. a welcome patron on a boat!

Incidentally: Like the handicapped angler logo I made?

Yet Another Aside: Malibu Pier Moo-moo. I’m not affiliated with the boat ‘Aquarius’ but I see it’s now running daily to some of the ‘old-time’ famous spots not fished by other moo-moos often. Two runs a day except Tuesday. I understand the areas it fishes, many spots like the ‘Big Hole’, famous to the old salts, hasn’t been fished by moo-moos in a long time. Check their website.

Near Last Aside: Moo-moos’ Blues

Last weeks’ 06/13-19 ‘Pack ‘em On’ award goes to the Monte Carlo out of 22nd St with [font color=red]79 (maximum 80 anglers) anglers for ½-day, am [font color=red](only) trip.

Boat Size/Loads for ½ and ¾-Day Moo-moos

A Quick Reference!
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h313/tsurikichi/FROM1229/FROM0422/0620BotLength.jpg

½ & ¾ -Day Moo-moos

Interestingly ….. According to a reliable source, For landings from the Channel Islands to San Diego, last Saturday (high for the week) total showed ……. 121 boats went out with 4035 anglers. That’s an average of 33 anglers per boat. Pretty healthy loads on the moo-moos if you remove all the six-packs and 10~15-packs from the count. Glad to see moo-moos fattening up during the Summer for the lean Winter months!Note: Boat capacities vary. Passenger numbers and fishing space may be relative to the boat size.

Interesting that …….. depending on the season or situations, boats are assigned to do a landings’ various runs. There are twice as many boats as listed above that are pressed into ½ and ¾-day service throughout the year!

Comments:
Vessels that are commonly assigned to BOTH runs are labeled BOTH.
Fisherman’s Landing have no ½ or ¾-day boats at publishing.
Port Hueneme has no ½-Day boat at publishing.

Fish Measurments!

Do It Right!
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h313/tsurikichi/FROM1229/FROM0422/0619fishlength.jpg

Measuring Fishys

I’m adding one of my pet peeves here and I hope it doesn’t grate too much! Please throw back fishys that are short or just the exact minimum size. On the moo-moos, even with the fish sacks being wetted diligently, fish will shrink … thusly … may measure ‘short’ at the end of the day. This could get you a ticket …… an expensive ticket if the DFG officer took the regs literally. I don’t keep fish. If I’m being asked for fish, I won’t hand it over unless it’s between three-quarters and an inch over the minimum. Humorous drawing intended so please laugh.

Total or Standard Length- Length from the tip of the mouth (closed) to the longest tip of the tail.
Alternate Length- Length from the frontal base of the foremost dorsal fin to the longest tip of the tail. Ex. White Sea Bass (WSB)
Fork Length- Length from the tip of the mouth (closed) to the fork of the tail. Ex. Pacific Bonito.

Fishing the kelp at PV is always fun. A number of older guys make up a part of the PM Tuesday regular group so I’m right at home with the somewhat laid-back atmosphere!! Thinking of dong an AM then re-ride the PM yet I’m thinking I’d have to get up early again for the Wednesday trip. When I say early …. I mean early!! Again, don’t bother asking HOW early …… it’s embarrassing!

8lb Cuda

Three or four contenders for the jackpot. 7~8lb Barracuda won! Deckhand Damian again did his most outstanding, heads-up job of working the deck. Lots of hustle, experience, and attention to detail. Good work!

Summary

Fished down south by the ‘Flats’ for cuda until the conditions just got too be too much for fishing the slimers. Shifted gears and took off to the outside to Sculpin country and got limits all around on an exceptional grade of rattlers.

Plastics

Barracuda …………...........Sculpin!

Fishy Plastic

Lots of Plastic and Jig Cuda. Pinhead Anchovies caught them too. Same goes for the Sculpin. Lots of weighted Plastic rigs and frozen Squid bait rigged on dropper loops!! Four ounce weights.

Good Day

Fished with a lot of good guys.

Thanks for the report and detail; great as always.

You nailed them on the plastics this time, I guess you will have to save your skunk picture for next winter.
