Finally got some time to get out and fish again. Had planned to meet up with a friend who has a boat in Newport Harbor but something came up and had to make some quick change of plans because we were already on the road and I had promised the kids to take them out. The weather was nice and it had been years (I think about 15) sense I had been to Newport Pier so I stayed on Newport Blvd and headed down Balboa Island. Found a good parking spot gathered the troops and equipment and headed out. Lots of anglers out there today, weather was perfect, but the tide was out and it was shallow all the way to the middle of the pier. My other issue was that I only had very light equipment with met (2lb and 4lb test on my mini rods I use for trout and the harbor, and the kids rods) and no dead bait, only swim bait and lures. I did have some Sabaki Rigs in my bag so hoping there was some bait fish I set up my little girl Katelyn with it on her SpongeBob rod. I started throwing my 3" white swim bait I was going to use in the harbor and got lunch out for the kids.

Fished for about a half an hour, nothing and no one else was hooking up either. Then along came one of our favorite friends.

People were feeding it and it decided to stay around the whole time. After another half hour of this I packed it up and headed back to the harbor. Deciding that I did not want to walk the shore with a 3 and 5 year old I pulled in to the wall along side Newport Blvd. and started throwing my white swim bait with a red eyed head.

Got a few good hits near the bridge and in the channel during a half an hour but nothing stuck. Watched a few boats go by and some paddle boarders. Packed up the kids and headed down to the park near the house for them to play.

Going up to Oxnard this weekend, going to do some surf fishing while there. Hopefully it will be better! Still good to get out.

Enjoy the kids while they're that age, 'cause they grow fast, and before you know it, they don't have time to spend with their folks.

Nice report and pictures. You spent some wonderful time with the children and it's hard to top that. For them, it's an exciting adventure. For parents, it's memories that will last a lifetime. Thanks.
