VENTURA, Calif.—A fishing vessel with 25 people aboard has been escorted back to the Southern California mainland after an early morning collision with a drifting work boat in the Channel Islands.
The Coast Guard says the vessel Mirage reported about 3 a.m. that the collision punched a hole in its hull about 2 1/2 feet above the waterline.
The collision occurred in Beechers Bay at Santa Rosa Island as the Mirage was on an overnight fishing trip. The Coast Guard says the work boat was reportedly unlit and adrift.
The crew of the Mirage made temporary repairs and it headed back to the mainland under escort by a Coast Guard boat.
Petty Officer Christina Bozeman says it arrived about 11:30 a.m. The Coast Guard is broadcasting warnings about the drifting boat.
