Customizing Your Stock Lucky Craft Flash Minnow 110.

I’ve received quite a few PM’s asking for me to detail the steps of customizing the LC’s. The level of difficulty range from easy to moderate, depending on how creative you want to get with the special touches on your creation.

Basic customization consists of upgrading (replacing) stock hooks and adding simple designs to the body of the lure. While advanced customization goes into more elaborate cosmetic design of the lure, either by hand stroke or airbrush methods.

Let me start by making this statement. With the exception of upgrading the stock treble hooks on some LC’s, it is absolutely NOT necessary to custom enhance them in order to catch fish. These lures are a finished product right out of the package and will catch fish “as is.”
I do it because it looks cool, keeps me busy when I’m bored and it’s fun to catch fish on a lure that have your own special touches on it. I also feel a bit more confident throwing these lures and “confidence” goes a long way in fishing.

Post up and share some of your special creations… :Big Grin:

Basic tools required.
Acrylic nail polish (colors).
Acrylic top coat (clear).
Small split ring pliers (jewelry type).
Toothpick or thin artist brush.

Basic steps to enhancing your LC.

The first thing that I usually do with my LC is to replace the stock treble hooks. On most of the Saltwater Series patterns, the LC’s already comes with the stronger and corrosion resistant Nickel Plated #6 Owners ST41 Cutting Point Trebles Hooks.

Some of my favorite patterns come from the Freshwater Series. For example, the MJ Herring (as featured below). These freshwater patterns come with the weaker bronze treble hooks that will bend out easier on larger fish and can rust with just one session in the surf. This could cost you a memorable catch and should be replaced.

Stock MJ Herring LC.

Replace all three stock hooks.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%2010/015-19.jpg

Always use hook protectors while working with any lures.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%2010/016-18.jpg

Add red gill slits.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%2010/017-14.jpg

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%2010/018-15.jpg

Add Sardine dots. If you have a steady hand, you can use the brush provided on the nail polish bottle. Or you can apply the dots easier and more accurately with a toothpick or a thin artist brush.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%2010/019-14.jpg

Add any other “special” touches.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%2010/020-14.jpg

Apply a thin layer of nail polish shiny top coat over the gill slits and dots.

Finished product - Weapon of Mass Destruction, ready for the battlefield.

Here are some "Wingnut Specials"..... it doesn't take much to make your own "signature" LC!

Here is my "TEAM 57 Deadly Dozen".

Never hit the surf without them. You never know when conditions will dictate which one to use. The trick is to match the pattern with the moment... often, you have to change it up many times in a single day.

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture006-6.jpg

The 100% Factory units: Metallic Sardine, Metallic Zebra Sardine, Metallic MS (Missing Scales) Sardine, Metallic Candy Sardine, Nashiki Sardine, Aurora Mackerel.

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture001-8.jpg

The Factory "Enhanced" units: MS American Shad/Sardine, MS Green Mullet/Sardine, MS MJ Herring/Sardine, MS Aurora Black/Sardine, Silver Baitfish/Frankenfish Sardine, Factory Tune BSP/Sardine.

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture002-7.jpg

Some of my personal favorites: Custom "Frankenfish" & Barred Surf Perch Sardine.

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture034-5.jpg

Tools & accessories:

Paint pens, acrylic nail polish, laquer, split ring pliers, Owner's nickel, anodized red & tin treble hooks, Owner's feather trebles (for clear water & finicky Halibut bites).

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture033-5.jpg

If you're not familiar with the LC's, it's hard to pick up on the cosmetic enhancements.

Here is the before and after pic of one of the LC's that I "enhanced".

The factory model, on top, is the factory tuned version with two larger treble hooks.

I added another hook and replaced them with the smaller sized Owner trebles with the red trailer.

Then I put the Sardine dots on each side of the body and place red slits on the gill plates.

Minute changes, but very effective.

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture-5.jpg

The Ito Vision 110 is a pretty decent surf lure. My favorite pattern is the Akahara Iwashi. Love the trippy treble hooks on them. The movement is more of a side to side wobble compared to the fast wiggle of the Flash Minnow 110. Even though it also has the sliding BB weight like the LC's, it is lighter and are harder to cast for distance. But a nice lure nevertheless.

I caught a few Butts on them and a couple of Calico Bass out of the surf a while back. I own quite a few of these Ito's and just can't figure out why they're more expensive than the LC's? I have more confidence throwing the LC's... so that's what I tend to stick with.

Here is my Ito Vision 110 "TEAM 57 Deadly Dozen"... but not as deadly as the LC's.

The top left corner is the Akahara Iwashi pattern.

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture001-10.jpg

I'm testing out quite a few things this time... from some new custom LC creations to a new line and even a new ProCure scent that I've never used before.

We'll see how it goes, still learning and trying different things out there... thinking "outside" the box.

Hopefully, I'll be posting some positive results.

I think I'll take these two along also.....
Freshwater patterns with a few special touches, straight from Japan.

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture003-10.jpg

I'm also going to give my new "Bad Creation" a try!

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture-6.jpg

I don't keep my lures in boxes. They're only in a box when I hit the water. I try to keep them in their original packaging until I'm ready to open them.

I have three of these slat wall panels & hooks displays to organize all my tackle. This one has my saltwater tackle. Closely guarded 24/7 by "Wingnut Pug"!

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture004-13-1.jpg

Here is what I carry with me when I hit the surf.

A small size Simms chest/waist/hip pack. It depends on how you want to wear it. I prefer to wear it as a backpack because it's out of the way, but can't be easily accessed.

It contains the following items:

A small box that carries about six of my favorite LC's, a few swimbaits and a Krocodile or two. An extra spool of line, bottle of scent, measuring tape, sunblock, lipbalm, hand towel and an infrared water temperature gauge. I wear my digital camera around my neck on a strap and tuck it down the chest area in my waders. The camera is completely water proof and is shock resistant.

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture002-13.jpg

Essential gear consists of the following items:

Waders, wader boots, 3rd Grip Holster that carries a pair of pliers, Boga Grip, and second rod. Cap, sunglasses, personal floatation device and last but not least... Team 57 or S.W.A.T. apparel.

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture003-13.jpg

Okay, here they are... some new "wicked" creations.

A new generation of "Frankenfish".

I'm gonna unleash them this weekend.

He he... brainstorming at the LC workstation, working on my stash before I head out!

Whatdaya think about this latest "Chrome Frankenfish?" Too flashy?

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture005-17.jpg

Check out these new Saltwater Game FM110's that I got imported in from Spain.

Aurora Skeleton Sardine and Horse Mackerel.

Check out the Aurora Skeleton Sardine. The Sardine dots are under the outer skin coating... cool!

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture002-24.jpg

Here is my TEAM 57 "Santa Claus Special" LC.

The Xmas Frankenfish. :Envious: I'll start throwing this one in December.

There will be a few of these hanging on my Christmas Tree!

Meet "Nightmare" Frankenfish LC.

My Halloween creation... to be used on heavy overcast days only.

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture011-16.jpg

Here's the RS LC that I got in from Japan.
Let's see how well it does in the surf this weekend.

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture-14-1.jpg

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut4/Picture-6.jpg

I used to throw the "Factory Tune" LC with two larger treble hooks a lot. This version never fouls up. I've found that I get a much better hookset and a higher landing percentage with the smaller three treble hook version.

When the Halibut hit the lure and one of the treble takes hold, the rest of the hooks usually grabs too once the headshaking begins. This is great when you get that legal, but a big pain in the butt trying to unhook and release shorts.

I also noticed that the slower you retrieve the LC, the less chance that the hooks will foul with each other, which is the way that I prefer to work a LC, with a slow roll!

Hope this offers you up some ideas!

Most of the LC patterns I fish with you won't find on the shelf of any tackle store.
Extensive, exhausting and relentless searches overseas and specialty websites will (may) yield what you are looking for. :Secret:
Knowing a couple of LC reps doesn't hurt either.

Hey Wingnut, I've never owned a LC.

1) What is the weight verses a simular size Rapala ?
2) Are they heavier ?
3) Do they float or sink ?
4) If you fished a Rapala (simular size and color) all day instead of a LC do you feel the LC would outfish the Rapala by a big margin ?

I have several Rapalas but they are light and tough for casting, better for slow troll.
The lt blue with the broken back ( 2 piece ) is my 'Hot One' for harbor cudas.

DR, Nothing beats a good Palomar knot.

I can't give a fair assessment on how effective the Rapalas are compared to the Lucky Crafts. Mainly because I have not given the Rapalas an equal chance. When I first started surf fishing a few years back. The person that taught me how to surf fish, Surf Master Mike Kichigai, put a LC Metallic Sardine Flash Minnow 110 in my hand and told me to start throwing it. Honestly, at the time, I couldn't even tell the difference between a LC from a Rebel or a Rapala from my freshwater tackle box. But the results were immediate and surprising. They say if you throw something with confidence, you will have success with it, and that's why I prefer the LC's. Every time I cast it, I "expect" good results. Now, not to say that I haven't experimented with a few other similar lures in the past few years, and I have. Such as the Vision Ito 110, the Jackal Bros Smash Minnow, Yo Zuri, and most recently the new Rapala Max Rap. But in each case, the LC's outcast and outperformed them all. You get what you pay for and if it's working well, why change it... I will continue to keep an eye on the market for a comparable or maybe better lure, if one ever comes. Because an open mind is a good thing when it comes to fishing and necessary to keep the edge. But until that day comes, I will always count on my go to lure when condition calls for it. Good luck out there!

"Fear not the weapon... but the hand that wields it."

Here is the latest Rapala Max Rap. Beautiful, but still can't casts as well as the LC FM110 and the hooks are weaker.
To each his own... fish on!

Different situations and different conditions calls for different retrieves... but a slow & steady retrieve is all it takes.

Thanks Wingnut... Do you ever use the typical freshwater technique of a few jerks followed by a pause? Just wondering because that technique really kills em in FW. Thanks for the help!

Generally, no... but some of us do use a twitch, twitch... pause retrieve.

Keep in mind that Halibut are ambush predators. They like to lie in wait near structures and ambush baitfish. Think like a Halibut, if I was a Flattie, would I want to go and chase that lively baitfish that is darting every which way... or would I rather chomp down on that fat, lazy and injured baitfish that is slowly swimming by. Keep this in mind with every cast.

The WAR baits guys are targeting calicos from the boat most of the time, so the burn between the kelp lanes or by the boiler rocks works really well for them. For halibut from the surf, do what Wingnut says and you'll get awesome results.

Primary - Baitcasting set-up for throwing the LC.

Secondary - One of two set-ups.
1. Spinning outfit with #10 fluoro for dropshotting.
2. Baitcasting outfit with a Kroc or swimbait.

THANKS MUCH

Billy, those are Owners hook covers. They have a tab on the top that makes it a lot easier & safer to put on and take off. Comes in four sizes, the red ones are small, the green ones are medium, the large ones are purple and the xtra large ones are yellow. These are much better than most hook bonnets I've seen out there. I purchase mine from Bob Sands Tackle in Van Nuys or FishnFools in Granada Hills. You can also find them on-line. Take care and good luck out there.

A little painting tip (I tole paint)- to get the little dots, you can get tooth picks and sand the ends a tiny little bit, dip the toothpick in the paint, then on the lure. If you want larger dots, sand more off of the toothpicks or use wooden scuers (sp?). If you are using nail polish, they have ones that are quick drying (1 minute). If you are nervous to try it, remember, NAIL POLISH REMOVER. : )

Very cool thread! Thanks for sharing with us.

Thanks for the tip Karyn, using a toothpick is a great idea. :Big Grin:
Sometimes it's hard to control the size of the dot with the nail polish brush.
I also put a thin layer of clear coat over the dots to protect them a little while longer while surf fishing. Otherwise, the sand takes them off rather quickly.
Thanks for your input.

Not trying to hijack this thread-- however, since I am a girl, I know a little bit about nail polish and how to use it and can share some info...

Wingnut- You are welcome. They also sell a stylus at Michaels that has a metal round tip to it. When I feel kinda wild, I use the toothpick trick to decorate my nails (polka dots, tiger looking things, flowers- etc) and then just throw it away when I'm finished. Just FYI- they also have a crackle nail polish. It wouldn't work for your dots though. But maybe if you wanted to get creative? Also, if you go to Michaels they have shinny stickers. I am not sure how that might work out, but you could try it.

Lovefofish- You probably got too much polish on your jig. Perhaps you might want to paint it on with the brush it comes with and use fast drying polish. They have 60 second drying polish- and if your polish gets to thick, put a few drops of remover in it and shake it really good. Then let the polish sit for a few so the air bubbles will surface, then use it. Good luck.

I put a very light clear coat over the dots, just a quick swipe. If you actually try to paint it with several brush strokes, it will melt the dots. Good luck!

Pretty cool stuff! I'm really thinking about adding the infamous "sardine dots" to my LC.. they seem to be pretty effective as you have them on nearly all your custom LC's :Thumbs Up:

I have a couple of jerk baits I picked up from BPS's $1.99 junk pile.. gonna experiment with them to see how how to work them dots in permanently.. might hit up Michaels Arts & Crafts later to see if I can find some acrylic markers and maybe even some small stickers. :Big Grin:

Hey man my recommendation would be to to get some paint pens and just go for it. Stickers (in my experience) fall off soo easy. Also get a bottle of clear nail pollish, clear protectant, or Clear dip. to make sure your spots are protected.

BPS jerk baits do fine. I usually buy the all white one with red eyes. I also like the chrome and purple. There are some BPS jerkbaits in this batch.

....lately I have been removing the oval split ring, tying a snap swivel to the line and clipping it directly to the loop on the lure. Your very welcome. Yes, depending on which LC your refering to, 90, 100, 110 etc, they are usually floating and/or suspending, thats the need for the little "duck bill" on the front to get it to dive when retrieved. The LC 110s are what you see posted here in this thread. Don't get me wrong, I am by no means an Lucky Craft expert, this is been what I have learned so far. So trying to use it from an elevated location such as a pier would not work well if at all. They are typically used from shore casting or trolled from a boat.
As for "how" to tie it on, I use a Uni knot directly to the oval spilt ring or utilizing the snap swivel and taking the split ring off.
Again, hope this helps, if ya wanna meet some time on the water I will gladly show you how I use it.........

http://fishingnetwork.net/forum4/showthread.php?41562-Intro-So-you-want-to-catch-halibut-from-the-surf...

Hey Manuel,

Read this article and it should answer a lot of questions. You can't fish LC FM 110s from the pier since you have to be at the water level to work them correctly. When you fish them from a pier, the angle is to steep for them to dive properly. Flash Minnows work best at water depths of 6' or less. They can be worked in deeper water for more surface oriented fish like calicos, but for halibut under 6' is where you want to focus.

Which Phenix are you looking at? I have used a lot of Phenixs in the surf for halibut, and could provide some input. For a dedicated LC rod, my current favorite is a Phenix XG-3 7'9" heavy glass cranking rod. If you're looking for something a bit more versatile that leans a little more towards the LC, an X-12 is probably your best bet. While it's not a dedicated cranking rod, the new Recon 804MH is a great all around rod that will put fish on the sand with LCs, the dropshot, or 3in/4in swimbaits. I'm a bit biased since I prefer moderate action rods for fishing jerkbaits, but there are plenty of SWAT guys that like a fast action rod for the LC. Personal preference will dictate which one you buy.

Hope this helps, and see you at the surf event!

Thanks a lot guys, good input to think about and consider. NT i will take you up once i get some decent gear.
BSP not sure what Phenix it was but that Recon 804MH sounds good.

i went through quite a few rods before i broke down and went custom, $280 and i wouldnt trade it for a steez rod and reel or a cumuls with a core. I finaly got what i wanted and its amazing.

Toothpick or thin artist brush.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%2010/014-17.jpg

Basic steps to enhancing your LC.

The first thing that I usually do with my LC is to replace the stock treble hooks. On most of the Saltwater Series patterns, the LC’s already comes with the stronger and corrosion resistant Nickel Plated #6 Owners ST41 Cutting Point Trebles Hooks.

Some of my favorite patterns come from the Freshwater Series. For example, the MJ Herring (as featured below). These freshwater patterns come with the weaker bronze treble hooks that will bend out easier on larger fish and can rust with just one session in the surf. This could cost you a memorable catch and should be replaced.

Stock MJ Herring LC.

Replace all three stock hooks.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%2010/015-19.jpg

Always use hook protectors while working with any lures.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%2010/016-18.jpg

Add red gill slits.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%2010/017-14.jpg

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%2010/018-15.jpg

Add Sardine dots. If you have a steady hand, you can use the brush provided on the nail polish bottle. Or you can apply the dots easier and more accurately with a toothpick or a thin artist brush.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%2010/019-14.jpg

Add any other “special” touches.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%2010/020-14.jpg

Apply a thin layer of nail polish shiny top coat over the gill slits and dots.

I found these baits after buying them and stuffing them in a box in a corner. I know theyre not LC's, but I think they might look good.

Wingnut.what do you think? Will these baits I pictured here, work in the surf? I especially wanted to ask you about those Owner Ripn Minnows. Reason being is the way the lip/bill is placed on the bait. Your input would be very much appreciated!!!

These two versions looks pretty good. I think the Daiwa DB Minnow (bottom) may work a little better than the smaller baits. I like the Daiwa slow sweeping action. The Owner Ripin Minnow looks good too, but I think they're a floating design, not suspending. I could be wrong, but I prefer the suspending feature on the hard baits. Give them a try, I'm sure they will produce for you... good luck!

I haven't had any experience throwing a jointed bait in the surf before so I couldn't give you an accurate opinion on those.

A few weeks ago, Lucky Craft sent me a few of their new series hard baits to test out in the surf environment.

I'll share this one with you guys, I think this will be a winner! :Thumbs Up:
The new Flash Pointer 115 Series. Gorgeous looking hard bait, comes in 28 color patterns.
Kind of a cross between the Flash Minnow and the Pointer Series.
I can't wait to try this lure out... maybe at the HG4 event.

Another new hard bait LC is putting out is the Blade Cross 110. For tight structure fishing such as boilers and kelp beds. Looks like it will be a killer bait for Calico & Spotties in the harbors too.
Also, check out the Pointer SSR Series, great looking stuff... as usual, Lucky Craft is on the ball! :Big Grin:

So this thread is probably one of my favorites. Wingnut, someday I hope to meet you so that I can thank you in person for all the great information and knowledge that you have and continue to share on this board.

I decided today to test my skills at customizing some LCs. Not gonna post any pix, cause I pretty much botched the nail polish work. Changing hooks no problem. Using nail polish, big problem, especially for a guy who struggles drawing stick figures! I'll be recruiting one of my nieces who is very artistically talented to complete the painting mods for me.

Again, thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise!

After my LCs got beat up, I finally had the opportunity for some customization. Here are two of my amateur LC designs. I tried to come up with something that would improve the LCs flashiness (while trying to make it look a little cool at the same time hehe ).

http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/q596/thienvo8/IMG_1572.jpg

I bought some holographic paper, glitter, devcon epoxy, and paint sharpies. I used the shapies to cover up all scrapes.

Next, dipped the hexagons into some clear nail polish and used cotton pliers to place them on the LC

I then added a thin layer of nail polish over the top and coated it with aqua blue glitter then a darker purple glitter over it. Finally, I finished it off with a thin coat of clear Devcon Epoxy

Post up your niece's work after she is done with your LC, we would love to see it...

Here's some pix of my niece's work on three of my LCs. I showed her pics from this thread and about 45 minutes later she produced these. These are pretty much reproductions of Wingnut's and other's work. I think she did a great job and I hope I can put some fish on them this coming weekend. Gotta find a tackle shop between Bakersfield and Newport where I can get find some suitable treble hooks (anodized red and Owner feathered) to finish these up. Haven't been able to locate these in Bakersfield so would appreciate any tackle shop recommendations in the LA or OC area. Heading down from Bakersfield to Newport Beach on Saturday and will be there thru Tuesday. Surf fished Pismo area last year in April, which was my first time surf fishing. Staying at a place right on the beach in Newport, so I plan on hitting the surf every day. Can't wait!

I was in Vegas this weekend, and so of course I went to Bass Pro Shops, and took advantage of some deals in the process. Thanks to my rewards points, I got these for about $3.50 a piece. I know theyre not LCs, but I have seen these being used in the surf, with some success I might add. I have some Deco Color markers, and some clear nail polish to customize them. Should be a fun project! Has anyone used paint markers, like the Uni Ball, or Deco Color markers for their baits?

Welcome to FNN.
I buy the small jewelry split ring pliers on Ebay. Just search for "jewelry split ring pliers" and a bunch will come up. They're not that expensive, around $10.00. Water "resistance' bags can also be purchased on-line or at most fly fishing shops. Simms is one of the top high quality brands, but there are a few others that make nice products as well. The side holster is called a 3rd Grip Rod Holster. They have been discontinued and are very hard to find. If you happen to locate one, buy it! Good luck out there and looking forward to seeing your future reports.

Thanks for the reply, Wingnut!

I have a question, though. When you would use the markers, would you apply a coat of clear nail polish on top of that? I ask because I planned on applying some Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear clear polish on the marks I make. Im hoping the clear polish will help the lures new colors in resisting fading and wearing out too fast.

@WingNut How can i cast my LC's further into the surf??

How far do you really need to cast? 60 yards? 80 yards? Most fish I catch in the surf are 30 yards in...

Longer rod? My rod is 7' 10" medium action 10-20 lb rating.

Lighter line? I typically use #12 - #15 lb test line. If you prefer braid, maybe 35 lb braid? I don't use braid, just a good quality mono is good for me.

Good luck!

Plenty of rod manufacturers out there with quality sticks. Just find one that feels comfortable in your hands.
Phenix makes some nice rods, I like their Bass Recon Series.

Don't worry about how far you can cast, I'm sure that your casting skills are more than adequate for surf fishing. Work on the more important things, like lure presentation, method of retrieve, tide & conditions, where and when to hit certain locations... that will put you on more fish than worrying about getting an extra 10 yards on your casts.

If you dip in clear coat, try sprinkling on some clear hologram fine glitter (big flakes arent useful, as they are too big to sink into the epoxy/clear coat.)

Just sprinkle it on before it hardens. The best glitter to use for this purpose is "Creative Beginnings" Ultra fine "Diamond pastel" series.

If you get the pink and green, you can emulate the color-shift you see in fish, looks great.

Here's my attempt, I got them for $2 each with rusty hooks from my buddy's dad. He found them while metal detecting.

I used a Sharpie gold paint pen as the base. Then put the rest was my gf's nail polish.

FYI: The Sharpie gold paint pen & nail polish doesn't mix well. So avoid it if you can.

Smaller and lighter than the 110 and don't cast as far. Dives about a foot or two deeper also, so go with a slower retrieve or a twitch, twitch, pause retrieve. Many people have caught nice fish on the 100SP in the surf. Personally, I prefer the 110SP. The ones you bought are the freshwater version (red packaging). The saltwater version comes in a blue packaging and have the stronger nickle plated silver treble hooks.

A member on FNN and SCSF that does lure painting as a hobby offered to customize a few lures for me. :Big Grin:
He's not interested in going "global" right now, but maybe someday.
I'm very fortunate to have acquired his services at this time...

The 100SP is a bit shorter & lighter than the 110SP. It comes with two treble hooks instead of three. It also dives a little deeper than the 110.

Thanks for the reply wingnut. Do you used the 100 for fishing hali?

No, I stick to the 110's because I got that bait dialed in...
But many are using the 100 with great results. Just slow down the retrieve or go to a twitch, twitch, pause... retrieve. The 100 does dive about 1-2 ft deeper than the 110.

Wingnut brother, this thread is flippin awesome thank you for taking the time to post it
And wow what a collection you have of LC's! Talk about packin!
Thanks to you and everyone at fnn I got my first 2 LC's today, I am so pumped to hopefully not catch anymore Leo's and rays, switching from the squid bait I was using.
I'm pretty sure the lady will appreciate not having the smell of squid linger in the car anymore to lol

Hey I don't think anyone asked, but if you had to pick one or two LC's to use, that just trumps all others with bites, which would you pick? (Take your time, I'm sure your thinking of the hundreds you have lol)

Now that the HG5 event has passed... and the first S.W.A.T. "Surf Series" Flash Minnow 110 have been introduced, we can declassify all the data.

A couple of months before the HG5 event, Lucky Craft International approached me and asked me to design a new Flash Minnow 110 pattern for the surf. It will be the first in a series of Flash Minnow 110's specifically modeled for surf fishing. They wanted to introduce this first lure at the HG5 event.

Lucky Craft acknowledged the rise in popularity of the sport of surf fishing and realizes the potential they had with the sales of the Flash Minnow 110 spiking in the last few years. With the help of S.W.A.T., they will give their target market exactly what they want. :Thumbs Up:

After accepting the project, I gave the new pattern a lot of thought... I didn't want another version of a Sardine or a simple cosmetic revamp of an existing pattern. That would be too easy, right? I wanted something completely new that was not in the current line-up of Flash Minnow 110's. After getting input from a few S.W.A.T. Team members, I decided on a Grunion pattern.

Next, I contacted the only person I knew, that can help me transfer the vision that I had in my head, onto the lure itself. I called John Kim aka JKim (The LC Artist). Just like myself, John embraced the challenge. What transpired in the following weeks were a mix of both excitement and frustration. I won't go into details, but I will just say that I truly appreciated John's patience and dedication while working with me through "multiple" prototypes until we got it right. I know that John spent quite a few sleepless nights working to perfect the design and getting me the prototype before the deadline. :Applause:

I submitted the prototype of the lure with barely enough time for the Lucky Craft Factory to produce a couple of hundred lures, just in time for the HG5 event. Even though it didn't come out "exactly" how I wanted it... for the first try, it was more than good enough. I originally wanted the MS "Missing Scales" effect on the lure, but the factory didn't have enough time to produce it. Also, the blue packaging that has a image of a Bass on it was supposed to be replaced by a Halibut. All this will be done for the next production run slated for the retail market. At this moment, Lucky Craft sales representatives are taking these lures to tackle stores and retail accounts to garner interest for the next batch. :Big Grin:

For now, the only ones in circulation are the ones given out to each S.W.A.T. member and the participants that were lucky enough to win one at the HG5 event.

My goal is to have at least a half dozen or more of these "Surf Series" Flash Minnow 110 out there. Maybe a different Sardine pattern? Or a variation of my favorite pattern, the Metallic Ayu? Maybe a raked bait pattern...? You will have to wait and see... :Secret:

Now, I was dying to put the prototype into action myself... but it was more appropriate to have the designer himself put it in action first. :Envious:

John proved that his creation works!
The first fish caught and released on the Electric California Grunion prototype is this BEAUTY! :EyePop:

Arthur,

I couldn't wait to get my new LC from you at the Hunting Giants event and once you placed it in my hand I felt a pretty cool sense of confidence with my new "Surf Series" Flash Minnow 110 Electric California Grunion. It just looked like it was going to catch fish! and now we have solid proof!

Unfortunately my new "Surf Series" Flash Minnow 110 Electric California Grunion that you handed me that morning will not catch fish as it has been relegated to being hung on the wall in my fishing room!

You can definitely be assured that when they hit the market I'll be getting a good supply that will be put to good use! :Thumbs Up::Thumbs Up:

Yes!!! What a beast of a butt! This LC is a BEAUTY! I am on the fence on this topic though: to throw or not to throw...

I know that an LC blessed by the Commander himself is worth risking to Poseidon (I had 2 days of stellar fishing plus induction fish) but this one (electric grunion) is not even on the store shelves yet! Oh what to do???

SWEET! Very nice fish Jkim.
The LC pattern is nice as it is, but the MS will be perfect! I couldnt agree with you more Arthur. I would love to see the final product (halibut instead of bass on the packaging and the MS)
I am in the same dilemma as my other fellow S.W.A.T brothers on whether or not to throw it lol. I feel proud of it and wouldnt want to cast it into the depths of the kelp or next to a boiler and living in fear of it getting stuck
Cant wait to see the rest of the LC's in line.

For now, I'll throw my beat up MS anchovy and hang the "Electro" on the wall until they hit the shelves. :Big Grin:

The scent goes away pretty quickly after it completely dries...

As for the patterns, try to match the bait fish that's running in the surf. Whether it's Sardine, Anchovy, Smelt, Grunion or whatever...
But as far as Halibut goes, if they're on the chew and aggressively feeding, you can throw just about any colors/patterns and they will hit it.
