My Surf Fishing Therapy…

The majestic sight of the sunrise
The clean fresh morning air,
Reminding me of the reasons
Of why I am out there.

I take a long deep breath
As I step into the surf,
The cool water welcomes me
Back into the familiar turf.

The foam of the waves surrounds me
As I wade through the salty mist,
This is my kind of wonder
Another form of personal bliss.

The lure goes flying off into the distance
Coming back on a slow and steady retrieve,
I go through the motion anticipating
What Poseidon’s gifts I might receive.

As the scent of the ProCure lingers
And the LC performs its dance,
Over and around all the structures
Hoping to find somebody at home by chance.

All of the sudden there’s pressure
As I dodge another wake,
The strain of the rod tip signals
The all too familiar headshake.

The silent drag screams quietly
As the big legal fish ran,
Really gets the adrenaline pumping
In the battle between fish and man.

The fight is on and it's brutal
As both sides struggles for the upper hand,
It’ll either be me on my knees in anguish
Or with this legal on the sand.

Now the Flattie lies on the sand helpless
Impatiently awaiting its fate,
With visions of being thrown in a bucket
And ending up on a dinner plate.

I hold up the Flat Boy for a picture
Admiring the beautiful prize,
This is your lucky day my flat friend
Today won’t be your demise.

So I laid the Flattie back in the surf
It vanishes with a swat of its tail,
Go give my regards to Poseidon
Tell him that I treated you well.

Go brag to your friends that you tangled
With Wingnut and lived to tell,
Tell them the battle was epic
And how you gave me Hell.

Now the sunset sends me packing
All the way home I will reminisce,
To relive the days’ memories
It doesn’t get any better than this.

I finally pull into the driveway
After a long, long drive,
Wingnut Pug is there to greet me
And runs right to my side.

As I put together my report
Leaving another adventure behind,
My thoughts are already wandering
Of the next one on my mind…

********************************************

After getting word from my Northern contacts that things are starting to heat up, Mike (Bones) and I decided to head North today for our next surf excursion. In the surf at the first location at grey light... we hit three spots today, all three were productive. Thanks to those who gave me the heads up, you know who you guys are.

Conditions: Outgoing tide. Cloudy & cool morning with a slight drizzle. Partly sunny in the mid afternoon. Water temp. 59 degrees. Swells minimal and relatively flat. Water clarity excellent with little to moderate salad. Very few baitfish presence in the water.

Action: The Flatties are active, very aggressive and pushing up tight to the beach. Mike worked the dropshot for the majority of the day with Gulp 4" Baitfish and 5" Zoom flukes and I threw the Baitfish Silver LC almost exclusively all day.

Pics for the day - recap at the end.

We caught so many shorts today... did not take pics of every one.

Arthur, that's a killer poem to go along with a killer surf trip! It perfectly describes why I look forward to hitting the surf each and every trip. 16 halibut in a day is definitely an accomplishment, and there was a nice legal thrown in too. Although, you have some guts fishing a Steez and Fuego in the surf seeing how poorly magnesium and saltwater mix. It worked out, but I got a little scared when I saw the pictures. Any particular reason you chose the burner ratio today?

Thanks for another killer report, and I am looking forward to hitting the surf again with you soon. Just got to finish my 25pg essay and a few other things first!

Arthur,

Great report. Ur report always cause me trouble. It makes me leave work and hit the surf. I love ur setup with Steez. Educate me on this. I thought Steez was a freshwater reel (for now anyway). Did Daiwa come out with Saltwater version? If so, let me know...

I recently shelled out on pluton (w/ 30lb braid) and Pheonix (8.5") rod. Great for calico and butts....

We should have like a "Arthur takeout Day" where the winner of a drawing gets to fish with Wingnut for a day. of course, he gets to buy lunch.

keep it up Arthur. Ur reports gives me relaxation when I am working. Hope to bump into you if I get a chance to get out there.

Geez Art, you got more flatties in one session than I got all of last year and I didn't even get a legal at all. Location? skill? luck? I think it all of the above. Leave it up to you to put it all together. I went to Castaic Sunday and fished on the shore. We all limited out on stocker trout and a few striper schoolies. I saw Bob trolling out there, it was a decent day. 4th of July is only a month away bro, Vegas is calling.

Very productive looking trip guys!
Flatties on the munch!

What was that big white one?!

How you liking that new Fuego Arthur! I love that reel but couldn't bring my self to get it salty! :EyePop:
I think that round looking white dead fish is a juvenile Sunfish, they grow to like a few hundred pounds. We always run accross some strange stuff on this particular stretch of beach.
About the Fuego, it feels and performs exactly like my 2500 & 2508 Steez. I think that's because it is the exact reel with different cosmetics, but at more than half the cost, pretty good value. Matches up really well with the Fuego spinning rod too.

You are always setting a new higher standard! I love the poem!

Nice job guys! Looks like you guys cycled through a bunch of shorties to get to a legal. One of these days I'll make it up there and show them LA halis the power of rusty Krocs...

OH......The poem was flawless and it describes every feeling and emotion I also feel when I'm surf fishing too. I truely couldn't have described it any better my friend......Great JOB!!
Yeah Mike, we did walk a long way didn't we? But what a pleasure it was not to have to fight the surf. This was the first trip in a long time that I didn't even get wet. It was a fun & relaxing day in the surf capped off with an awesome steak & BBQ ribs dinner... perfect!
The one "spooked" Flattie that I nailed was a moment to remember. Let me share it with the members. Mike & I were working the surf side by side about 10 yards from the shoreline in about three feet of water. The surf was flat and the water was crystal clear. We could see pebbles and every bit of debris right down to the bottom. We were moving slowly fan casting and working the surf when all of the sudden a nice 20" Flattie shot from the shallows right past my legs going straight out to the open water towards my line with the LC coming in. The water was so gin clear that I saw the markings on its back. I yelled out, "Whoa, did you see that...?!?" As soon as I said that, thunk! The LC gets hammered. I fought the fish and beached it to realized that it was the exact same fish that I spooked by the same markings on its back. Amazing, the fish fled in fear, but seeing an opportunity for an easy meal, casts aside its fear and went for the kill. This is a prime example showing how aggressive these Flatties get when they're active & hungry. It was something else to be able to experience that moment. Ranks right up there with seeing a Flattie go airborne after baitfish... very cool.
The poem is for all those who share the same passion of being in the surf...

Good job Arthur! When's your next clinic? Us rookies would gladly pay the tuition.

That legal hali looks like he has a bruiser jaw. He must be the muscle in the school yard.
I'm still learning myself man... every time I hit the water.
That Hali did have a thick jaw, I guess the school yard bully got tamed.

Awesome! Loved the pics...Let me know when ur done borrowing my Steez setup. And stop getting sand all over the thing LOL.
Ha ha, thanks Vic... the set-up performed magnificently. You might not get it back! :Envious:

Nice going Wingster & Bones. Great read. Got to get onto a faster puter before I can see the pics.:Wink: Thanks for sharing your fishing adventure.:Envious:
You're still using dial up Patrick?!? You better get rid of those Rabbit ears too before you won't be able to watch TV anymore either...
Good luck with the quit smoking thing.

Hey Steve, I kept thinking that I might run into you up there sometimes on Sunday, maybe soon. I haven't used the Kastmaster in the surf yet, I prefer the Krocodiles myself.

16 halibut in one day! :EyePop:

Thanks for taking us along on another adventure Arthur, outstanding report and pics....I liked the "clear water shot" btw. Very cool.

See ya soon,

TD
Thanks Aaron, the conditions was so perfect for Halibut there on Sunday. Flat surf, warm & clear water, no salad... just missing a bunch of baitfish that's all.

Thanks Marc, I don't really think twice about what weapons I bring to the surf. You know me, I don't baby my arsenal, it's a tool, it will get used. Plus, I keep Frank (Nessie Hunter) busy toying with my reels. He gets them back in tip top shape every time.
I found myself deliberately slowing down my retrieve speed at times with the 7.1 ratio... and landing those Flat Boys were effortless. I tried out a new line too, Izorline... pretty strong stuff. But the Seaguar InviziX is still the top choice.
I don't miss those long essays & final exams Marc, good luck and we'll head back out there together again soon.

Nice work guys! Surf domination!!
It's nice to have a good day like that once in awhile, builds confidence.

Without any question my favorite post are always yours. Congrats on another fun day out there! Props
Thanks Rob, I'm glad you enjoy the adventures. :Big Grin:

Way to rule, King Wing!!
And cudos for sharing the secrets of your success.
Thanks Sid, but there are always some secrets that will remain hidden... :Secret:

You even match the lucky craft colors to your baitcasting setup, you are a perfectionist freak brother.  Wingpug is a lakers fan? Awesome!
See you Friday night.
LOL, that was just a coincidence. But I do tend to match a few things... and who doesn't like a clean & organized house... Go Lakers!

Wow! Wingnut u r the master. Excellent report.
When you do well out there, the reports are much more fun to write.

fish overload!!! wtg wingnut.
And we didn't even take pics of every fish that we caught.

Very nice trip you guys had out there those are some very nice short halis you guys landed and a nice legal as well. Thanks for the pics and report.

Bigred
You haven't been fishing lately Lucas, what's up... are you grounded or something? Time to get back out there again kid.

Hey Arthur, nice outing, but time to take ya to the honey hole. I know, you already got some, but mine are better!!! I'm waiting to see the day when that 25 pounder jumps on the LC! Mikey
I'm waiting for the invite Mikey! I've seen those big Flatties that you pulled up from time to time. :Envious:

Nice work on the halis you two! It's cool to see you guys got few sandies in the mix.

Wingnut,

Any luck with LC's in the harbor? I'm on a hali mission myself.
Those Bass just loves the pier pilings Jason. The only LC's that I ever use in the harbors is the Pointer SP100. They dive a little deeper than the Flash Minnow 110's. But I have much more success with swimbaits and dropshotting and I stick to what works best for me.

I forgot to say Arthur you should have put that Sunfish in a bag and gave it to Geordy he would eat it.lol
Now that's messed up Lucas... Geordy doesn't eat anything that's been dead for more than three days. That thing looked like it's been dead for a week! Sunfish Sashimi!

The Steez series is geared mostly for professional freshwater Bass fishermen. I have them as part of my Striper arsenal. But once in awhile, and I claim temporary insanity, I take it to the surf. Usually in flat conditions and harbor fishing. As careful as I am, I think I dunked them several times on Sunday.
Come to the surf event in July. You can fish with me and you don't even have to buy me lunch.

That's because you never want to hit the surf with me Binh.
Can't wait for the Vegas trip bro, I got a score to settle there in July.

Nice Poem!

Nice day in the Surf!

You guys killled it up there!

Glad I had to work Sunday!

I am truly starting to believe I am one of these :Dancing Banana: when I go with you 2 in the Surf Arena or maybe I need to take a Shower in the AM before we go!:EyePop:

Great report as always!!:Thumbs Up:

So it goes!
I can't get you the NPH Legal!
You can't get me the Surf Legal!!

But we go our separate ways and we get them in our own environment! Go figure!

Steve
Steve, rest assured that we will both have our moment in the sun one of these days. It's just a matter of time... and I kinda like the anticipation and the thrill of the chase. Very nice trip you guys had there Monday in the NPH. I'm glad Eddie didn't farm that legal.

It was pretty funny Bob. Mike started out on fire... he caught three Flatties before I even got my first bite. :Envious: He was yelling out to me, "Hey Arthur, I don't know what you're doing over there, but I'm catching Flatties!" And then the momentum changed...

No offense Seng, but I don't really care what you do with your catch as long as you follow the rules, and it seems that you always do. But I do appreciate you clarifying your catch to keep ratio. Kinda hard to gauge what that is exactly with all your "limits" reports. But I guess that comes with the territory. No doubt that you're a skillful slayer. There's no need to get defensive if you operate within legal boundaries. I would never try to impose my fishing etiquette and/or beliefs on anyone. Take care and good luck out there.

And for your "experiencing it one time" comment... don't you mean to experience it "again"?

Couple questions for you guys..

1) I am driving down to do a 1.5 trip from Diego, do you guys have any suggestions for a set up I can use for my longer range trips? Also, what type of lures?

2) I am driving from San Fran tomorrow for a few days, and I was wondering if any of you are up for hitting Bolsa or where ever? Maybe a few of us can do a mini derby and all chip in a new LC per contestant, winner takes all? Or a sushi/sake dinner!

It's so strange the difference in fishing from up here at the Berkeley pier and SoCal. Water up here is so murky that there is no way any Ito or LC can be effective. Anyhow..any info on #1 and any takers on #2.

I haven't been out on the Big Blue for quite some time so I don't have any advice for #1. I would post the question in the Saltwater General Section. You will get many advice & responses there.
I heard that Bolsa Chica is running pretty good right now. If you want to set-up a get together or something, post it in the rendevouz section. You may get some interests there also.
I've caught fish in dark murky water before, pretty tough but I've found that darker color artificials are more effective.

Just like fishing, I was specifically targetting a few people, you included, to take the bet. You don't throw out a bait to catch a butt if you are fishing in a lake, do ya? :P

The other question was just a bonus, since the Hesbros (another target) fish out there frequently, and some others here do as well.

Anyhow, I will post the first question on the other board, thanks for that advice :)

Thanks Gary, been writing since high school but never really shared it. I wished that I was more musically inclined though, never had enough time to pick up an instrument. Should have picked up a guitar instead of a golf club.

Kevin
Spend more time targeting fish, they're more challenging. A sword fight doesn't prove anything. Good luck out there.

You're still using dial up Patrick?!? You better get rid of those Rabbit ears too before you won't be able to watch TV anymore either...
Good luck with the quit smoking thing.

Funny you say that Arthur. I am going to be in the Black for one day. Friday. I bought the crap ( converter box & new digital antenna , rabbit ears ) I hooked it all up and it don't work. I am not sure if I got the right antenna or maybe I connected it up wrong , I don't know. My little brother is coming up from Dana Point to figure out what I did wrong and get it working. I guess Friday I will be watching my collection of DVDs.

And yes I am still using dial up.

Arthur,

I can attest to Sengs credibility. He is definitely a man of his word. If he says he will CPR he definitely will. They don't make em much better than Seng.
