We celebrated Cappo's birthday on an overnight trip to Santa Barbara Island off the Freedom. I was quite nervous doing this trip, my first overnight trip and at the worse time ever , but I wont go into detail about that.

We make it to 22nd landing Thursday nigt, Cappo, Ositto, and myself around 8:30pm. We boarded Freedom with 35 anglers with Tom Lee as our Captain. Had to make sure we secured our bunks (God its like sleeping in coffins), and head out to the bait barge picking up sardines. After the rundown of rules from the Captain we head belowdeck to sleep.

We get to our destination at around 2:30am - 3:00am and start with making bait, squid! Cappo hears the Captain yell that they're right under us and jumps out of his bunk. I turn over and continue in the wonderful bliss of sleep :Envious:

Around 5:00am Cappo comes round and wakes my sleepy head up to tell me they're fising, I think we were going for White Sea Bass :???: It took me all of 5 minutes to decide if I want to escape my coffin or continue in my hibernation. I guess the escape won over. After freshing up, I gear up and drop my line. From here on out... I dont remember what happened or when it happened. All I know is I caught fish, and plenty of it. And towards the end, about 3 hours before we decide to head home, I call it quits and lay my head down for a 4 hour nap

Here's what we caught

Cappo: 3 Sculpins, a mass amount of Chuckleheads and Starry Fish
Ossito: I have no idea...
Larissa: 6 whitefish (lost one when it surfaced), 1 red (they made me throw it back), 1 sculpin, 3 chuckleheads, and 4 starry fish which i had to throw back as well.

Enjoy the pics:

Weather sucked leading into this trip, which of course leads to bad fishing. The original plan was to head to Clemente after the Capt said SBI has been crappy last few days. Well change of plans we went to SBI instead. DOH!

We tried for WSB in the morning and then finished the day with rockfish. It really sucks having to throw back huge reds because we were fishin in a sanctuary. Anyways at least I got out of the office for my bday and got to fish. Thanks Larissa and Oz for joining me. Oh ya jackpot went to a halibut.

I will be back on this boat once albies and yft are biting. Crew is the best around.

Wow...those are some jumbo whitefish and sculpin! Sucks about having to release those nice reds and staries...so what? u just let them float? or do they have one of those deflating things...?

we were fishin shallow, around 80-100ft. They swam right back down. Some had to get piercings to make it back down.

Hi ~larissa,

WTG on the fishys !! Very nice report and photos ! 35 anglers is a pretty lite load !

Allow me to use your wrapped thumb and fish in one of my 'asides' (already wrote the copy) in my own report .... next week ...... pretty please. Privacy matters so I think no one will know it's your thumb other than your very best friends.

Await your next adventure,

Sounds like Ron's going to make your thumb a celebrity... Nice report and pictures and getting Juan out for his birthday.

I remember my first overnight trip. It was on the Fury when I was 9 years old, at SCI in a September. I didn't lose my dinner, but while everyone was getting yellows on the surface plugs, I was dropping to the bottom catching 2-3# sheephead every drop on the anchovies. At that age, it was a win for me!

LArissa, sorry I didn't get to go out on Friday for this one. Happy Bday Juan.....Those bunks on the Freedom are better than most I've been on. At least they have privacy curtains. If you want to try some "Coffin" bunks, believe me I know a few. Was on one boat that was so bad, I had to go sleep in the galley. Once you got it it was no turning over, u either stayed on your tummy or on your back. bad news all the way. Looks like descent fishing anyway. Take care......OFG

Nice job on the fishies, Larissa. And congrats on surviving your first overnight trip. As far as the bunks, yeah, it feels like you're in a coffin, but if they make it too comfy, you'll have a hard time getting to the rail when the anchor drops...

Awesome whitefish, and that was the smaller one??????

Nice reporting Larissa. I agree with you. Sleeping on a boat is great, especially on the way in. Sleeping on the way out can be tough, especially with the excitement of the upcoming day and the number of beers being dranken.

Nice catching and nice photos of yourself and others. My g/f says you look thinner!!

We definately need to do one of these together Ats... And yes that was actually one of the smaller whitefish that I caught, can you believe it? I have these big fillets in my freezer waiting for Ka Eden to cook
