Started adding flash to the wing in my stimulator.
Catches light from every angle now even in low light!
This here is a size 14. My Socal Slayer!

Looks pretty good if you back off it some. You can see all my mistakes at this angle
I need new fly head cement =\

Mistakes? Real bugs usually look a lot more beat up and rag-tag than a commercial fly after tumbling through a few rapids. I'd say those "mistakes" are helping to fool them. Lately I've noticed that the more fish tear up my elk hair-based flies, the more fish they catch! Nice mod to an already awesome pattern. Honestly, that looks more like a real insect than just about any stimulator I've seen before (not saying the stimulator looks like anything in nature anyway, lol).

Sure it does
Looks similar to an adult caddis as it hits the water.
Also looks like several local adult stoneflies when they get their wings. (I believe that's what this fly was originally trying to mimic)
It could even mimic a hopper well with that high wing and tail,
or a cricket with all those tail stubs and front "leg" hackles.
Also mayflies kinda have funny appendages sticking off the front and back with a big wing that looks like this.

I think that's why it does so well all over. It has lots of colors on it to suit every fish and lots of features similar to natural foods.
You can change the body dubbing color to match the hatch too.
I have read it is a universal bait for these reasons.
The fly is also designed to be fished in moving waters as opposed to standing pools. It's a great fly for skittering, one of my favorite ways to fish it. Although since it does have some hollow elk hair, it will float on the surface in a stalled pool with a light presentation.

Pull it from one side of a pool to the other, 90* to the current and watch the fish slam it! It works pretty good in moving water!

You will see these guys all over locally.. (usually a bit lighter in color than this mayfly here)

Check out how close City Dad's fly get's to the real caddis! :EyePop:
Amazing!
He uses a crazy upside down parachute post system and cracker wings! That's thinking outside the box!

Nice rendition. Tie that baby on a #12 or #10 long shank hook with yellow dubbing and I'd take it to Colorado and fish it over a Golden Stone hatch in June or in late summer when the grasshoppers are in full swing. How does she float? Ever try her with a dropper?

TJ. I've always wanted to get into fly fishing for the fly tying aspect! You're starting to tempt me even more, but too many things I wanted to do relating to fishing...

that's a cool looking fly, dude. Do you ever fish it for bluegill or bass?

I have not tried my stimi on the bass just yet.
Never really tried fishing flies behind my dry either just yet. The stimi does float fairly well for a streamer..
I use the "hot flash minnow" on the bass. Only been able to make it happen once though. I hooked a few bass on a bee popper I tied at anglers' lake before it closed but all three of them spit the hook. One was about 3lbs!
Here's the only bass I ever landed on the fly, at Perris, From shore on the hot flash minnow!
What a rush. I was pretty stoked from this one, and surprised it happened my first attempt!
Fighting a considerable bass on the fly is very exhilarating!

I gotta try and do that agin this summer. hehe
I have since tied a bunch of different versions of that hot flash minnow fly.
That was floating line too!
I think I might have got another dink or something on that wooly spin. Hard to work with those heavy flies though. Anything with weight to it and I start hitting myself. lol
I have some striper flies but I couldn't get any striper on a spinning rod either when I went to try and use them at Castaic.
