I was going to.
But I was told the 1200 HP Merc is bad about scaring off the Perch while trolling.

I should get a WOT speed of 53 MPH.
And get 2.3 MPG at 30MPH turning 3000 RPM

And get 2.3 MPG at 30MPH turning 3000 RPMyes,but with the 1200 you'll be hitting 110mph.And you'll be using like 35 GPH,,,lol,,,or 1/4 MPG,,,:ROFL::ROFL::ROFL:

Nice boat though, and you can't get any better mileage!:Envious:

Volvo Penta Diesel?Yan-Mar?

I have one word for you,,,,DIESEL

A new Volvo diesel package cost between 11k and 14 k more then the 8.1 duoprop package.
11K more for the D4 260hp diesel.
14K more for the D6 diesel, Which does not fit.
The 4cyl diesel weighs 200lbs more then the big block gas and has a lot less torque.
Weight of 6 cyl diesel? 400 lbs more?
The inline 6 diesel and 8.1 Mag both have TQ in the low 500 range.
The TQ curve of a inline 6cyl diesel destroys sterndrives.
I would get 3.1 MPG with the diesel.
Will get 2.3 MPG with the gas.
After much research. The new high rpm/hp diesels are not very reliable.
Even after expensive turbo, supercharger, intercooler, aftercooler failures.
The engines are only going maybe 1500 hrs till needing a rebuild.
Its big displacement low HP engines, that go 1000's of hrs.
And so do the big block gas engines in lower HP configurations.

Also....
If I ever sucked up the pacific ocean through a exhaust riser (Water ingestion)
I could buy a brand new 8.1 longblock for around 5500.00
Ive never seen a diesel longblock. Rebuild or new diesel 10k or 20K?

I'm a diesel guy,
My tow vehicle has a 400 HP Cummins 6cyl turbo diesel getting 20 MPG MT
I really wanted to go diesel in my boat.
After doing the research. I choose not to go diesel. And I really wanted to.

Cant believe I put all this boat/engine info on a cattle boat forum.
Hmmm.... So is spot# 107 back there?
I think they call that the back of the boat.

I'm not impressed with the reliability records of the Volvo diesels.
Theres one on another forum. 4k in repairs and still running awful.

Yanmars 4cyl is way underpowered for my boat.
There 6cyl is destroying the Bravo 3 drives.
It would not fit in my boat either. Engines too tall. I checked three years ago.
I'm not raising my flat decking for no engine either.
Yanmars also into making lightweight Alum engines.
No good for long term dependability.

My 260 HP Merc only gets 1 MPG better then the 1200HP Merc.
Thats just not right

Whats really cool is....

LOL,,,did u think that getting 940hp and $40,000(IDK price???)extra would have been worth it?:Secret:

Of course it would, In a heartbeat.
But not at the expense of never being able to catch a Perch while trolling.

I'm guessing here, But I think the 1200HP with racing drive goes for something like 130K
The Merc racing 525 HP with the race drive cost like 50K
Complete Merc 8.1 375 HP Gas with Bravo 3 drives go for 18K.
I found a PRE 2008 8.1 375HP New crate engine for 10k. Can get New Bravo 3 and transom assembly for 6300.00.
Merc 8.1 HO goes for 21K
Volvo D4 260HP Diesel Duoprop 28K.
30k for the D4 300HP
32K for the D6 320HP?
Imagine spending that kind of money on a diesel. Then having turbo's and superchargers, etc that cost thousands of dollars and are prone to failure in the marine environment. Then the engines worn out at 1500 hrs just like the 8.1 gas.
Nice to brag about having a diesel. But I'll pass.

To bad you talked yourself out of it.

Your probably right.
I take way too many months off work every year.
Buying the very expensive diesel,
Then having too consistently keep replacing all the high dollar parts.
I would be much more motivated to work all the time year round.
All the extra work hours would be good for my pension fund. :Dog Piss:

Thats Cool, It should be.
California seems to be the only state that usually charges more for diesel then gas.
At my local station, There within 15cents of ea other now.

I used to have a 8' inflatable with a 5 hp 4stroke.
I was thinking of using it for fishing the Horseshoe kelp.
Decided it was to uncomfortable. I want some shade and a refer. :Beer Toast:

Doesn't the 225 HP outboard 4 strokes go for like 20K ?
All this stuff is crazy expensive, For something that can get destroyed so quick and easy.

I could have bought a brand new 5.7 longblock engine for like 5K. Or a remanufactured for 3K. Then bolted all my stuff on.
But I wanted a stronger drive, Better MPG and faster cruise speed.
So I went the high dollar route.
Its only worth it because a brand new replacement boat of my make/model/size goes for over 83K. And I don't even like them.
Any used 26' fishing boats would go for over 50K. Then back to replacing parts.
I will be able to make the 200 mile round trip to the Cortez Bank when i'm finished.
Seems like money well spent.
