First Cat Island trip of the year. Gut finally got the boat put back together so we decided to head out in search of whatever might be biting. Noah was game and we took off from Davies at about 5am.

Stopped at LB Bait looking for squid. Turns out they were out but San Pedro had some... The thought crossed our minds but that's a long haul for the candy bait. LB couldn't get a hold of the carnage so we assumed we wouldn't see them at Cat for a fresh scoop either, so we loaded up w/ chovies and dines and headed across the channel.

We didn't have a game plan so about half way there we decided to try the west side to look for some action. Assumed the weekend croud would be near avalon, etc. The conditions were calm, but there was a slight brisk breeze as we pointed NW to the island.

We tried a few small bays that looked great but the only thing it produced was a WFO blue perch bite. No luck on calicos or anything nice. We continued on and decided to drift for bottom critters. First fish was a barely legal Ling (1st one for Gut) on the dine. About 1/2 of our bait didn't make the trip as usual but we did have some frzn squid w/ us for the rock fish. A few minutes later, I got hit hard for Ling #2. We picked away catching treefish, reds, boccacio, etc. and then found a nice sculpin hole producing some fat ones. Started working back to the west end and tried Eagle rock. Noah got a nice sheephead and he caught a weird looking perch that had blue eyes (photo). Headed back at about 230pm riding a nice little swell. We were crusing up to 30 mph. Boat ran great.

Stopped by the shoe to see what was going on. After reading the reports and not seeing any fish pulled up, a whole lot of nothing. Cruised by the Victory which was packed-- report had 68 people on board...what a joke.

Anyways, we did pretty well and felt better after reading all the other reports local and at Cat.

Sorry for the late report. Appears we were a day early for the hot WSB going on right now. Still had a nice day on the water.
