Had the distinct pleasure to fish San Quintin with Mr. "Paddy" and his buddy Timmmay! (George Clooney's brother).

Bailed out of San Diego friday morning and made good time to SQ. No problemas at San Ysidro, no "red light of death", so off we went. Light traffic all the way, and military checkpoint waved us gringos through. !!Pasale pasale guey!!

Checked in with Nancy at the Old Mill, had the complimentary beer, and rigged up our gear, and made a beeline to Jardines for friday afternoon cocktail hour with the rest of the local gringos that live down there. Drinks extended into dinner, and before we knew it we were making plans with Marita & Sharon and her friends to go do a little karaoke in town.

For those that don't know, the karaoke bar is pretty much the place to be in SQ. Problem is, they don't have a wide selection of english songs. Timmmmay decides he will break the ice there, and take one for the team. He picks "I will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor. :Sissy Fight: It was a hit, and in fact, a certain Mexico Federale with certain, ummm, "propensities" fell in love with Timmmmay!

After a night of fiesta, and getting mad-dogged by mexican cowboy boyfriends, we got a couple hours sleep and got on the water.

Weather was overcast all day, not too cold, and 2-3ft with a little wind thrown in. Rocky ride but not horrible. After deliberation and chart consulting we told Pato (the guide) to take us to fill the coolers first, then we'll think about YT and stuff the next day. We shot out on the F/V Garron, made bait (which weirdly rolled on us quickly) and hit the famous "240" spot. We fished it for steady quality reds and occasional lings. There was a good current underneath, and wind up top, so it was a long day of repositioning. Pretty much 60 degree water clean water.

Saw something chasing horse macks (1-4lbers which we sabiki'd for cut bait), we quickly flung the jig a bit, but never could whatever was chasing them to commit.

Like I stated earlier, it was bumpy at times....

Highlight of the day, and jackpot winner, was Timmmay's monster lingasaurus. Check out the octopus this thing swallowed!!

San Quintin "dockyard" style...

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk274/sansou/San%20Quintin%20May%202009/SanQuintinMay2009079.jpg

Lather, rinse, repeat as far as nightlife festivities.

[This part is for the foodies] For dinner we brought some nice lingcod fillets to Jardines and had them all 3 styles (ajo, diablo, veracruz). Lunch on the water a nice Red Vermilion sashimi with ponzu & wasabe and Paddy's Grandma's wicked tuna salad spread, which we wrapped in toasted seaweed. Gourmet lunch as far as I'm concerned!

DAY 2

Morning came early, and off we went with a game plan to work our way north hitting the spots along the way until we hit the west side of Isla san Martin: the "15", the "6 1/2", then the facing west side, then the northwest lee side.

We switched up boats to a faster one as we needed to run-n-gun, plus we decided to forget going offshore for paddies, but rather spend the day "sportfishing" more than "meatfishing".

We had a real tough time making pieces of bait. Probably one of the rare times I've ever experienced that there. We tried and tried, and then figured we'd just go pure artificial if we had to.

Our boat the F/V Calamar (115 4 stroke Yamaha). Narrow and quick.
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk274/sansou/San%20Quintin%20May%202009/SanQuintinMay2009106.jpg

Our buddy boaters for the day (nice couple from Torrance) on the Coyote.
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk274/sansou/San%20Quintin%20May%202009/SanQuintinMay2009107.jpg

We made a beeline to the first spot and low and behold we were fishing right by the Pacific Voyager. I think they were bendo on a couple YT when we got there.

I fired off a old school blue and white Tady A2 (the ones you used to buy with a swivel on it) that got lucky as soon as we got there.
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk274/sansou/San%20Quintin%20May%202009/SanQuintinMay2009109.jpg
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk274/sansou/San%20Quintin%20May%202009/SanQuintinMay2009110.jpg

Got bit one more time for a few more headshakes, but it came unbuttoned. Pat and Timmmmay were working it too, but it seemd all we were getting after a while were lingcod when we let the jigs or big swimmies drop down too far (this spot is about 80 to 100 ft).
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk274/sansou/San%20Quintin%20May%202009/SanQuintinMay2009114.jpg
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk274/sansou/San%20Quintin%20May%202009/SanQuintinMay2009113.jpg

So we left the lings alone and I put the Whopper Stopper out with a XRap30 for a bonito or two for lunch as we head to the next spot....sorry no pics of the bonito (maybe 10lbers?) That Whopper Stopper is my favorite panga trolling rod now....love that thing!
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk274/sansou/San%20Quintin%20May%202009/SanQuintinMay2009117.jpg

Around the area Kelly (of K&N) was there too trolling and chatting with us via radio. He's a great guide if you want a premium setup to fish off of.
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk274/sansou/San%20Quintin%20May%202009/SanQuintinMay2009116.jpg
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk274/sansou/San%20Quintin%20May%202009/SanQuintinMay2009115.jpg

The next spot was only good for more bottom critters and no surface, so we cruised over close to the island and right up by the kelp. We saw some boiling going on, so we drift fished it.

This part for me was the highlight of the day and made all the trip worthwhile in of itself: WFO chunky Calicos on up top on the jig!!!

There were some incidental barracuda ticking us off, but for the most part, the calicos were good size and a blast to watch them blow up. We all had chasers too where they would follow their buddy up to the last minute before you reached to unhook them. Pat knocked out a really nice size one that we didn't get a picture of unfortunately. Jackpot as far as I'm concerned!

Props to my man "El Pato" for keeping us in the zone for as long as the bite lasted. Like all good things in life, it had to end. I would imagine if you flylined you'd keep them going for a few more, but how fun would that be?

We took off in search of maybe another kelp calico bite, and low and behold what do we see in the distance....

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk274/sansou/San%20Quintin%20May%202009/SanQuintinMay2009135.jpg

Hey Shogun, we need 4 cheeseburgers and put them on #57's tab! While your at it, hook us up with a 1/2 scoop of some nice sardines! LOL Thanks dudes!!

We returned to an area that happened to have a couple commercial friend's of the captain. They were taking a break diving and were working the halibut. We gave it a short shot for no love....it's boring fishing as far as I'm concerned & it takes too much time.

End of Part 1

sansou
05-26-2009, 06:57 PM
Last spots of the day we headed back south for some more lings and a couple flylines for whatever was up top (no love). Made good time heading home cause the boat was quick.
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk274/sansou/San%20Quintin%20May%202009/SanQuintinMay2009124-1.jpg

Commercial squidder....they were pulling up giant squid. That's NOT hot, so we bailed the area.

I'll buy whomever first correctly identifies what this is a nice Cadillac Margarita (drink prize to be collected at Los Jardines only)!

Timmmay got the big linger, Paddy got the big checker on surface jig, and I got lucky with a YT......AND, no one got to be a Mexican Drug Lord's sex slave, or catch Swine Flu, or spend a night in Mexican jail (we can thank Timmmmay's new "friend" for that!). Awww schucks, maybe next time!?!

On the way home we made a little stop off at Ensenada to check out a couple things. We also walked thru the market and had some excellent shrimp tacos from a place Paddy knows well. Good call my friend!

Enjoy the "bonus" fish pr0n !! LOL

One Cadillac Margarita for you next time we are at Los Jardines!

Cappo, you would have loved the sick surface calico bite. I slung a jig just by a boil on the edge of the kelp, hooked up, and I initially thought it was a YT b/c the sucker was taking drag on me on the 9.5ft jig stick & JX!! I really wished I took more pics of it all, but it was mayhem for a while.

DUDE those tacos look great! NICE job on the calicos, YT, Rockies, and lings!

Thanks man. It's a fishy place where farmers like me can even get bendo from time to time... Get yourself out there!

Nice job on the overall carnage, especially the YT on iron!! Looks like you homos had a blast!!

Forget the YT, that's just dumb luck. IMO, it's the calicos on IRON that made the trip hot! Let's get back out there this summer for the topwater fish!

WOW!!!:EyePop::Shocked: You guy's killed it! On and off the water!! The HOG Check boards on the IRON :Envious::Envious: I love the street food shots. Next time you go Sansou, I'm sure other FNNer's would like to tag along :Twisted:

Thanks man. I have posted in the rendezvous section in the past, but not many respond. It's too bad, cause those that have gone with me seldomly complain.

you should get yourself down there. It's not hard and it is a fishy place.

Super report don Rich, looks like you showed those 2 valley boys a good time. I'm not missing the next one, it turns out running for 4 and half hours isnt' as fun... who'd a thunk?

First off: Big kudos on you running a marathon. 26 miles in 4.5 hours is no joke....what are you training for next?

We missed you down there Omar. You've been before, you know how the stories go.... Let's do some longfin in July....Pat will fill you in on the details.

so who's bloody rag undies?

Que? No mames guey....

I cant wait to get my damn passport next year......

That was an awesome report. That cali bite looked sick. All nice grade cali's on the surface jig. :EyePop::EyePop::EyePop: Just sick.... Monster reds and lings. An elephant trunk? Iron yellows.... Congrats on an epic trip Rich. Thanks for the report and food pics.. Those tacos look bomb....

Get your pasaporte dude!!

I wasn't getting bit on the green mack pattern hardbait, and I was about to switch up to your blue mack to get it bloody, but then just as I about to change it to the one you gave me, a bonito hung. I want to get that blue mack bloody and send you some pics!! LOL

Gimme a heads up when you want to goof around and pierce corvina lips here in SD.

awsome trip guys. Looks like a blast. Good job on the yellow Rich.

patopatopato

is that wierd thing part of a geoduck clam?

Thanks man.

You ever hit that 3/4 day out of SD this past weekend?

LoL couldnt just let the joke rest eh rich!!! Incidently last trip we caught adir (iron shrimp) in the sauna with one of those.

We missed you down there. We gotta make a few more runs before you leave for Australia.

GREAT report Rich.... with some OUTSTANDING photos!
Good to see Pat on the board again....

I'm betting you guys told every senorita at the karoke bar that Tim was George Clooney's brother which probably got you some "extra" service!!

The fish market pics are crazy..... especially the Garibaldi's..... :EyePop:

I gotta agree.... some of the fish there dont look all that fresh...... not much ice anywhere in the pics.

How many barred surf perch did ya buy & eat? LOL!

Dana

Thank you senor!

Yeah, the ladies loved George Clooney....hmmmm, maybe next time I could pimp him out in return for free panga rides?

You and Wingnut know the score, when scheduling permits and things calm down, we'll make a run down there and do it up T57 style!

Love the pics of all the chunky calicos, congrats on the fat ling and yellow! Another trip or two and you are going to be the "Norm!" of SQ  Great report btw, thanks for sharing.

TD

Thanks. LOL@"Norm"

Workwise and with the kid being so freakin' busy with her own activities has allowed me to make the run down there a bit more. Some years I go more than others (I think 2006 I only went once?)...it's too bad cause it's not far, and I find it to be a cheap getaway from all the BS here.

Awesome report Rich......Pat gave me a play by play when he got home. He really ranted about that wide open calico bite on the chunks. He said they were all pigs!!!
Your report really made me feel like I was there dude.
Personally....With all of the BS going on down there in mexico........I think you guys are nuts but I'm glad you got my boyz down there......onto some quality fish......and back home safely!
Great job and congrats on another fine trip over the SCARY boarder.......LOL

P.S.

Next time I want to see a few pics of the beautiful ladies that are there too!

Don't believe anything that Shanty Irishman has to say! What happens in SQ, stays in SQ! LOL

Dude looks like you all had a blast. Great read and thanks for the pics....................fish

Thanks! Dude, I want YOUR pics of that Reyes trip. Now THAT is the trip to go on....I'm jealous. Been wanting to do that for years. One of these days....

Somebody beat me to it cuz when I saw tha pic just now, knew it was one of those nasty gooey ducks...yukkkkk I am sad I didn't get to go...:Crying: :Bawling:. oh well I had to be satisfied with this instead hehehehehehe

Nice fish! Where's the report???

We missed you Chris. I tried getting you a ride down there, but not many want to drive in Mexico....I can't say I don't blame them, it can be loco sometimes.

We'll get a big group going again, and I'll make sure you got a spot!

I tried..................

with every fiber of my being....to NOT

reply to this report...but

NICE JOB MAN!! Way to go on the fish, especially the yellow...and........that Calico fishing....omg....NICE...thats what I love.......

That would definitely be a trip of a lifetime for me My Friend!
I'll be in touch.

Thanks Terry. Just say when, and I'll be your huckleberry. You kiddin' me, Team Trolltoon down in SQ tearing it up? I wouldn't miss it for nothing!

AWESOME! Big reds, lings, cudas, yellow, CALICOS ON THE IRON, great food, what more can u ask for? I cant wait til my trip in July! WTH is that thing in the picture?

(*cifla*) patopatopatopato aqui Lilo......LOL

When you going in July? It's a good time to go for the Jellotails and maybe the seabass!

OMG those bass are HUGE must have been a blast catching those things on iron. jealous of the yellows and lings too :Envious::Envious::Envious::Envious:

Saweet looks like i missed out on another FUN fishing trip down in SQ those other pics are to much lmao.

Bigred

I think we'll be piercing quite a few fish lips this summer bro....besides, you can't ever complain about missing a measly SQ fishing trip, cause I heard the sick fishing stories you guys experience in Los Barriles. Your brother has me so fired up I'm ready to drive there tomorrow! LOL

Awesome report and pics Rich! Looks like you guys had a blast!

_Bullets

Whenever your ready to roll....you know the deal.

Killer trip Sanpoo, I wish I could post a few of the pic's up here but I think they might be a little too much for fnn so here's one for Bones.

Who are these random chicks? I didn't see them in the San Quintin chapter of the Christian Science Reading Room where I spent all my time when I was not fishing....

OMG...I JUST SAW THE OTHER PICTURES :EyePop::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL: you guys know how to have a good time!

Dam Rich, that trip rocked! Thanks for the invite... looks like I missed a good one! :Envious:

Dana, are we going on the next trip?!? :Secret:

What makes it interesting for me to take a trip down there with you is to see you tear it up on the halis in the bay. THAT, would be killer to watch and learn! You'd freak out the locals, for sure!

D:OMG!:NG!

Looks like the trip of a lifetime!
It sucks that nobody was strong enough to lift me in the air and spin me around when I was a baby! Then I wouldn't be so motion sick and I could join you there for fishing.

Oh! And believe me, I would not miss an opportunity to join you in that Christian Science reading Room:Razz:

Not balls of steel at all. I've been travelling Mexico and Central America for a long time. There's a smart way to go about it, and there's the other way.

Get your passport. The pangadero guides would get a kick out of you! You'd love it there....might never leave!
