Ok so I've been thinking about buying a Honda 2hp outboard for use on various inflatable boats and the aluminum rental boats.

Anyone know where I can find the best deal on a new Honda 2hp outboard in Orange County? I researched all the competitors and the portability of the Honda at ~27 lbs seems like the best option for me. 2hp is actually a little more than I need, so the 2.5hp that the other manufacturers offered wasn't a bonus in my book. The Honda goes for around $800.

The alternative is to build my own outboard using a smaller gas engine and chop up my electric trolling motor. Anyone ever considered removing the electric motor and mounting a gas engine to the shaft?

Here's the motor I'm considering...its a Honda 4 stroke and runs $175. It pumps out 1hp and can be operated in 360 degrees.

Here's an idea of what I am talking about:

get yourself a used nissan 2.5hp(or 3.5)....they are 2 strokes so they weigh about 26lbs....you only need to mix gas/oil....check these links of small outboards out:

Thanks for the help Geordy! I would like to get something 4stroke because I'll have to transport the engine inside my SUV. I dont want to deal with any mixing or leaking. While I enjoy the smell of gasoline just like the next person, its really hard to get out of your car  4 stroke is less maintenance.

lol,,,remember, these little motors(inluding the honda)have self contained tanks that you close so gas doesnt leak out,,,if u want a new one:

hey I was just reading about the suzuki outboard motors. I am considering the DF 2.5 model. Cabelas has it for $699. Looks like if you're looking to buy any new outboard, you can have over $100 by ordering online. Thats a big price difference.

Just be aware that 4-stroke outboards can only be transported leaning on a certain side. There will usually be a sticker on the motor with a picture depicting what side to lay the motor down on. If you lean the motor on the wrong side, you can easily foul your carburetor.

2-strokes can be transported any old way and they're much lighter for the same horsepower.

Something to consider since you were talking about transporting the motor inside a vehicle.

Tight Lines,
Kev

Kevgood observation.

I'm sure if it's brand spankin' new,it'll have NO oil in it,you can't transport any outboards with oil in them, not even lower unit,,,just a tidbit:Wink:

That one is a good deal! If only I had a bigger boat :(

I picked up a 1 yr old Honda 2hp today. Gonna test it out this weekend on my pontoon.

I would of ordered that Suzuki 2.5 from Cabelas if I hadn't found this Honda. The best price I could find for the Suzuki or Yamaha 2.5hp was $775 + tax which would of been well over $100 more than ordering it out of state. Thats an instant savings that you can smoke up
