A 25-year-old Trabuco Canyon woman just broke the record for largest rainbow trout caught at Big Bear Lake — with a $20 Wal-Mart rod she borrowed from her dad.
Erin Dominguez was fishing with her boyfriend Cheyne St. Laurent on the south shore near the dam when an 18.6 pound rainbow trout “hit a nightcrawler,” according to an email I got from her proud mom Becky.
Erin had to postpone her 1:30 reservation at the Mill Creek Manor Tea Room to get her catch officially weighed at the marina. She’s a “girlie-type girl,” said mom.
“Honestly, I really am not much of a fishing enthusiast,” Erin told me this morning as she was driving to a taxidermist in Apple Valley “to get this thing stuffed.”
But the 2002 Trabuco Hills High grad has fished with her dad “quite a few times.” This morning she drove the beauty to an LA firehouse to show her him and his firefighter friends. “They all came out and were stoked.”
The fish shatters the previous lake record (set in ‘95) by 4 pounds, according to an email from the Marina. It was 32 inches long and had a girth of 22 inches.
Erin is especially proud that the lake was packed with boats containing “the real pros,” while she was fishing off shore at her dad’s favorite spot with a rinky-dink rod. “I was literally wedged between two rocks using all my strength,” she said. “She was out of control.”
Oh, and I almost forgot to mention, Big Bear Lake is hosting a trout tourney where whoever lands the biggest fish gets $50,000. It’s next weekend.
