Jaysuuun and I hit up NPH to try out our NEW... USED (but not abused) achilles inflatable. it's a little old... pretty small... not too fancy... but it gets the job done. :Big Grin: Got there around 7am and thought we'd only fish for a few hours but ended up fishing till 8pm! It was such a nice day to be out on the water, we couldn't resist.

Jason got the first hookup on our new boat

Then his first spottie of the day... nice one!

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/achilles4.jpg

It looked like it was going to be a good day. We started out fishing our usual shore spots when we came across this little guy... anyone lose a nuclear chicken?

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/achilles5.jpg

Then it was my turn to catch something. I was glad to get the skunk off. He was a fiesty one! Even pulled some drag.

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/achilles6.jpg

Then another spottie and a small hali for Jason

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/achilles7.jpg

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/achilles8.jpg

I hook up again!

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/achilles10.jpg

Jason made me lip it. I was scared but did it for the picture. See what happened?

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/achilles11.jpg

I'll never do it again. I don't want my finger turning out like Wingnut's. hehehe. More pics of our day...

Lost fish story of the day: Sometime in the afternoon, I hooked into something good. Maybe a monster hali? Who knows. It hit my swimmie about 10ft from a wall on a beachy area. Felt dead weight, set the hook, and drag started screaming. He went straight under a U-dock. I knew at that point he was a gonner. Kept pulling line non-stop till I could see the center of my spool. I knew I had to do something before he spooled me completely so I manually applied the brakes and the fish broke off. That was our mystery fish of the day.

BUT!

About 15 minutes later, I hooked into what I thought was a big hali, then at first glimpse I thought it was a good croaker, but when we looked closer it had a purple-ish sheen to it and a pointed face. I had no idea what it was, lol, but we think it's a WSB. Can anyone confirm? If so, it's a new species to add to the list! :Big Smile:

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/achilles20.jpg

Another big spottie for Jason. He was slaying them spotties!

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/achilles21.jpg

Side Note: These guys were lounging near one of our good spots and pretty much every boat that passed by took pics and made ugly honking noises at them. What was really disturbing was when a small boat with 4 older adults came by, pulled up next to the sleepy animals and provoked them by splashing water on them and bumping the dock with their boat, laughing and taunting them. They even turned around and came back to do it a second time. The seals snarled at them... too bad they didn't jump in and sink their boat as that's what they deserved.

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/achilles22.jpg

Ok, back to fishing!

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/achilles23.jpg

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/achilles28.jpg

And last but not least, Jason's biggest spottie of the day!

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/achilles26.jpg

Great first day on the inflatable. After our outing with Flyngby and Hesbros we knew we wouldn't be satisfied only fishing from shore. Although Jason had a good tubing day with LunkerLover, he couldn't convince me to get one, lol. So we opted for an inflatable and it did not disappoint!

Fish Count
Tess: 1 croaker, 1 sandie, 1 possible WSB, 4 spotties
Jason: 1 croaker, 1 short hali, 1 sandie, 11 spotties!!

A nice sunset pic of the harbor to end the day.

That is a nice inflatable nice ride for NPH bass action that also is a WSB thanks for the pics and report looks like you guys got in some nice models and nice variety too. They also sell fish tape it goes around your thumb when you lip bass it helps from ripping your finger to shreds.

Great job, the big smiles and big fish show that you guys had a great time!!

Great first day on the inflatable. After our outing with Flyngby and Hesbros we knew we wouldn't be satisfied only fishing from shore.

I agree with you there. After getting out in the harbor with Steve on his boat,
fishing from shore in NPH just hasn't been the same since. My son feels the
same way too. I'll ask him "do you want to go to NPH?"
he replies..."are we going on a boat?"
me: "uh, no, not this time"
my son: "no thanks":Rolls Eyes:
me: "ok, do you want to fish anywhere?"
my son: "on a boat?"
me.....:Rolls Eyes:

Can't beat being on the water in NPH
Good decision on getting a boat and it obviously doesn't matter what it looks like,
how new or old it is or how big it is... it got you two on fish!!!

You two did great out there!! Nice job once again!!
And congrats on the new toy too!

wow, them are some nice ones. healthy spotties, best in a while on here. i tried lipping a WSB about that size and got shredded, good look on the boga grip. gotta lip those spotties though, not half as bad as what you did to them. thumb tape might be a good idea though if you have a day like that.

Jason and Tess,
Wow, what a great day for you too. Your day gives Jason's B-day trip a run for the money. Nice Juvi WSB Tess! And those are some pig spotties Jason, looks like you are going to be giving me some competition now! WTG!

Oooo, fish tape! We've never seen that before, or maybe just never noticed it. We'll make sure to look for it next time we're at a fishing shop. Thanks for the info! Ya, the boat really helps reach those spots you can't get to from shore. Can't wait to get back out there. :Big Grin:

WSB for sure... Great Job!!!

I'm glad we thought right! Thanks for the confirmation. I've been wanting to catch one of those. Woohoo!

  Thanks Eric! Ya we were fortunate to have a good first day on the new boat. It was exhausting being out there all day but well worth it!

Here's a side note to entertain an avid Lifetime Channel watcher:
We both didn't know what to get each other for our 3yr anniversary.
I ran out of ideas since Jason's bday just passed...
He didn't know what to get me cauz he never knows what to get me, lol.
Then a lightbulb went off in my head.
Since we both enjoy fishing NPH,
we both prefer being out on the water (after having such an awesome time on Steve's boat),
and fishing is something we enjoy doing together...
I proposed that since he didn't know what to get me and I didn't know what to get him,
maybe we could get something together that we could both enjoy together.
Hence, the inflatable.

 Awww, poor guy. lol. At least he knows what he wants? But I don't blame him. We haven't fished from shore since we went out with Steve and Eddie, LOL! But we will... probably sometime this week actually, but it's definitely more productive from a boat, as you (and your son) know. Hope to see you out there sometime!

Damn nice job on the fish. I need to get out more and explore.
George

We thought that was you, but I guess not! We only stopped by Balboa island for a little bit. There are soooo many places to fish out there.. we only hit places we were familiar with but we'll be exploring soon too. I'm sure we'll see you out there another day.

Nice job! I didn't see you guys out there. We had a good day also. Thats a fatty spottie for sure.

Ya, we were fishing in a completely different area. Still learning the harbor but I'm sure we'll run into each other someday.
Jason got all the fat spotties, JERK. :Envious:

Ya, I never knew about thumb tape, but will definitely look into it. I'm very much a "girl" when it comes to that stuff. :Big Grin: I say "no thanks" to getting shredded, lol. Thank goodness we had the boga grip. Actually, that WSB was shaking around too much to boga grip him so Jason flipped him into the boat cauz I would've killed him if it shook off. LOL. I think we're gonna get a net before our next trip.

Congrats on the new floatation device... you kids be careful in that thing now, okay?
Wrap some athletic tape around your thumb and you can lip those Spotties all day long, that's what I do. But don't let Steve (Flyngby) see it, he tells me, "You big sissy, catch and lip enough of them and you will develop a callus on your thumb... then you never have to worry about it anymore." Thanks for the advice Steve.

Oh, by the way... NEVER try to lip a Halibut.

Congrats on the WSB Tess, and Jason, those are some supersized Spotties!

Yeah it was pretty good day overall. I just wish we could've landed Tess' mystery fish, but we can't complain after she hooked into that WSB. BTW I only caught those pig spotties because you weren't on the boat with us.

Nice!!!!!!!!

Next purchase: Fish finder for the inflatable!!!

Yes, a fish finder would be nice. What I really want is one of those tricked out models that show a 3D image of the sea floor on all sides of the boat. But that's like putting in a $5,000 dollar sound system in a $500 car.

Wow! some real nice Spotties there. Looks like a great day out in the harbor. Also, nice job on the WSB.

Thanks, we had a great time . The only problem was all the drunk and obnoxious boaters out there.

Thanks! We did some research before we settled for a small watercraft. We needed something that we could tuck away since we don't have a lot of space and narrowed it down between a porta boat and an inflatable. We decided on an inflatable for it's stability on the water. It's a little small, but we can stand in it and sit on the edges without fear of tipping over. Oh yeah, and it gets us to the fish. :Titanic:

Me and Tess sure need some tape for our thumbs. LOL I don't think we can wait until we start developing a callous. She utilized the Boga and the sleeve of my sweater for the rest of the day after thumbing her first bass.

Tess & Jaysuuun,

Way to break in the inflatable!

It looks like another great day to be in the Harbor!

Tess,

Congrats on the new species!

After a few tries you will figure out how to lip them and not get the collateral damage!

I spent Monday in the pounding Surf with someone with a very sore and torn up finger from trying to lip a 30" Flattie!

Jaysuuun,

Looks like you got to play with some nice model Spotties! I look forward to see you 2 out there to show me the hot spots!!!!!:Secret:

Look forward to more of your reports together!

As for the purchase of the fishfinder? After your maiden voyage and report I would not lose to much sleep over it. It as all about being in the right spot at the right time! And I think you were successful without the help!!

Steve

Thanks Steve! Ya, we pretty much just casted anywhere and everywhere, LOL. Since our little boat's so light, the wind and current pushed us around so easily so we'd just latch onto a dock or drop anchor when we were getting good bites. But there were definitely a few hot spots. :Secret: Ya, I don't think we'll be needing a fish finder since we're only really planning on staying within the harbor. Hope to see you out there sometime soon!

Very nice Jason and Tess! Congrats on the WSB (new species). I know what you mean about being excited when you catch a new species. I've only fished the Harbor twice, each time with LunkerLover, and I have 3 new species to add to my list. Mostly due to the fact that I haven't done a lot of saltwater fishing. But still very, very fun. You just can't beat a good day of fishing, great weather, nice company, and lots of feesh!!!

Two things Guys:

I have a fishfinder for my Porta-bote, but I never use it in the bay. It is nice for knowing if you are too shallow, but outside of seeing Steve use it and actually locate fish, I thought it was useless in the bay because I fish the currents, which means the fish are usually moving (except for those pockets that hold fish :Secret:. Mostly we find those by experience).
There is a huge advantae to fshing a small and light craft in the bay. You can work smaller and tighter areas more thoroughly. I only have a small radius in which I fish, but the samll craft allows me to fish those areas thoroughly.
I'm talking out of experience and not out of neccessity. Kev and I both have other floatation devices, but we consistently choose to Portabote or float tube the bay. However, my last trip aboard the Spotted Fever does have me thinking about pulling out the other craft. Kev and I both started out in the bay in inflatables and there is really no other experience like it.

That's my :My Two Cents:

No doubt about it! After our first time at NPH, we were definitely "hooked." Spotties, halis, sandies, and now a WSB. It's amazing how many species are lurking around the harbor. Hoping to hook into a sargo, calico, or any other new species the next time around!

We completely agree. When we went out this day, we only fished a small section, but it took us the entire day (7a-8p) because like you said, we were able to fish the tight areas thoroughly. We were considering a fish finder before we actually went out, but after this trip we decided we didn't need one. We mostly fish structure anyway, so we probobably wouldn't even use it. I totally know what you mean about finding secret spots through experience as we saw with Steve and are finding out on our own. :Secret:
