Decided to take the boys out for a day of fishin. My oldest, Andrew, has been out with me many times since he was 5 years old. But this day was special. My youngest, Erick, it was his first trip on the big pond. We got there aorund 5. Got our tickets and loaded the boat. 37 somethin passengers on the boat today. Bruces plann was to get our bait (dines and chovie mix) and head out locally and check out the barracuda and bonita that were there yesterday. Well "here today gone tomorrow" or "shoulda been here yesterday". All gone, no one home, bye bye. So its off to Catalina. On the way there we see some dolphins and a spot of pilot whales. My little man Erick is completely overtaken by the sights. He got the biggest kick when the dolphins rode our bowwake. Hes lovin it soo far. My biggest worry was him gettin sick. Not to be. We set up on our first spot and i cast out a chovie for Erick and before you know it hes hooked into a bone. 1st fish on the boat!!!! 1st ocean fish ever!!!!! Were on the board!!! Had to keep the first fish, so in the sack he goes. The sport king does not rotate so were fishin every where besides the stearn. Cool. Andrew got a couple new set ups so hes in the bow practicing casting the jig. Not much in the way of legal fish. One here one there. All you wanted small fish and its pretty instant on the chovie. Erick get the hook and hand by me for 20 somethin small fish and couple borderline keepers that were released any ways. Erick asks "why u letting these go dad" I say "these are to small, they need to grow bigger" he say Ok !!!
Cool, another contious minded fisherman in the making. This spot slows, so off to another. That 1st stop would be the most productive and most action we'd see all day. Andrew really could care less about catching small bass, hes set on practicing on casting the jig cuz the barries will be here in force soon. Hes 10 and cast preety damn good. Hes using a Gusa 9ft 30lb rod and a Sealine 20 filled with 30lb test. Impressive to watch him, he'll tear the barracuda up when time comes. He also says i dont want to get skunked. I say "patience, do what you know and it'll work out". "Ok" he says and off to the bow he goes. Erick is getting pretty tired so dad grabs a stick, take the swimbait off the leadhead, pins on a squid and lets it fly. We're fishing arrow point, not too much current, leadhead sinks to the bottom. I get ripped and he gets me in the rock. I wait him out and up he comes, biggest bass of the day. 4lber or so. Jackpot so far!!! Im not really paying attention to all the other fish landed, so I got this in the bag? 1 more spot and not much. Couple raked baits, thats it. I hear "DAD", turn arouns and see Andrew with a huge ear to ear smile. Hes lipping a 2 1/2 to 3 lb calico. Priceless. I think he gets 1 more legal and its time to call it a day. Feelin good about jackpot, not to be as a bonie took it. Oh well, just great to be back out on thre water. Fun day with the boys.
