Today I caught my personal best brown on the Truckee River. Maybe not big to some, but biggest I've ever caught. I would guess it weighed close to 3#.

I took a few pictures and then released it to be caught another day. Everyone on the shore was trying to get me to keep it. I'm going back tomorrow.

Glad to hear about that Granny. I've hooked some big browns but about 3#'s is all I've been able to bring to hand myself. I bet people didn't like to see you release it, C&R is still a concept that much of the general public doesn't understand.

Have fun out there!

Good job! My personal best came out the area also, an 8 out of the main tributary for the main river, the Little Truckee. Its a fun river to fish, always love to be up there and at'em. The locals use crawfish to consistently bag the biggest browns out there, and I can say from personal witness to some of the local guides drifting big crawfish flies produces an awesome quality of fish out of the Truckee. Congrats!

That is some interesting information. I'm not certain where the main tribitary is or have any bearing on the lower, but I'll pass that along to Vader and maybe he will know. He hasn't lived here long and has gotten a little frustrated catching browns that are only 6 inches long. He changed that today.

We went back out there today, Granpa, me, Stickfighter, Stickfighter's mom and Vader, to spend a nice Memorial Sunday on the beach relaxing and staying cool. With any luck we would find a spot to work around the swimmers for some fishing.

It was too crowded most of the day to fish, but as the shadows grew longer the crowds disapated, we had some room to fish the deep holes. I caught a few browns between 6-8 inches long, Stickfighter played in the mud and practiced skipping rocks, his mom caught a couple little ones as well and so did Grandpa and Vader. The bite seemed to be a little suppressed from the day before, but just before we were about to leave, Vader caught what looked like a twin to the fish I caught the day before. It was the biggest he has caught out of that river after fishing it for over a year. He was so excited he was shaking when I snapped the picture. I was just as excited to see how happy he was.

Good job on getting them today anyways. The LT is dammed by Boca and Stampede Reservoir. I believe Boca is the lower, the upper is Stampede but dont take my word for it completely. The stretch between the two is the best area. Check in with the Truckee River Outfitters in Truckee for more info.

This time of year the water temps are cold and the fishing can be good all the way up to the dam at Tahoe. As you get further into summer, the best fishing starts farther downriver where the stream gradient is faster and the higher amounts of riffles and whitewater give the fish a high oxygen concentration. The guys at TRO are the branch for the Reno Fly Shop in Truckee, and are all very in tune with the local watersheds there.

That fish came on a trip with one of their guides during the middle of August. The Little Truckee has a far higher rainbow to brown ratio, whereas there are more browns in the main river. Right now is prime time for the area, runoff just really ended on the upper stretch of the river and the hatches are consistent, as you get more people in the area for summer vacations and increasing temps drive up the water temps too, the fishing become much more concentrated. But more than anything, enjoy your time on the water as always :Big Grin:

Congrats on the new PB brown trout. I actually was just watching a show on the Outdoor Channel where they were fishing the Little Truckee. Quite a few browns caught in the 4-5 pound range along with some beautiful rainbow trout. Have fun and good luck. Theres some big fish in those rivers.

Gotta go fishing to post a fishing report. I fished more over Memorial Day weekend than I've fished in two months! Sad but true. It's nice to live near a river where you can fish without paying for parking or anything more than a lure and fishing licence.
