Evening everyone, I am planning on heading out to New Port tomorrow morning with a few friends and one of them has, what he describes as a drop net. Basically its for catch live bait. What I wanted to know is what are the regulations for a drop net being used on the pier? I've never seen one before and I wasn't sure of the legalities with using it.

Thanks,
Sue...

Legal to use on the pier. The only thing I've ever heard to watch out for is the number of BROWN BAIT you have in your live well. Technically you could get in trouble for having more than 10 of a particular species. Just tell then you are going to use them for bait.

I'm not too sure what brown bait is...but I'll definately be looking photos up on it so I know what to look out for. His plan for the drop net was to try to get some chovies for live bait (if the snagline turns out to be a flop).

Thank you for your reply!

I'm not too sure what you are referring to as a drop net. Do you mean a hoop net like this one?

Or a cast net like this?

If it's a hoop net it's legal to have on a pier. You are allowed to have up to 2. However the hoop net is mainly used to catch lobsters and crab's. It's not designed to catch bait like anchovies. The holes in the net are just way to big for that.

If it's a cast net then no you are not allowed to use it. it's illegal in CA.

I am going to try to get a picture of it from my friend and see if I can figure out how to post it. He says it's called an umbrella net. Says it has four courners and a net underneath it. Basically it looks like an umbrella upside down. It's not a hoop net although it looks similar. We have a hoop net for lobster/crab as well. He said he bought it like 20 years ago so it's a bit beat up. I'll get back to you with the picture.
