Headed up to Santa Ana this morning for a couple hours with the fly rod. Took me a few trial and errors before I figured out the hot bug, but once I tied on the secret weapon, the action was non-stop. I actually got bored of catching fish and left at 12:30, lol. Ended up catching at least 20 fish. All released except for one bleeder, who is in the oven right now for lunch. Anyways, here are a few pics. I forgot the camera, so I had to take the pics with my cell phone. Sorry for the blurriness. Enjoy...

The Elkhair Caddis was the most productive dry. They were picking up the griffith's gnat too, but not as voraciously. As for subsurface, a yellow size 12 dunn wet pattern did the trick just fine. Also snagged a few on a beadhead prince nymph. All in all, a fun day flyfishing. Until next time, tight lines, and loose loops.

Thanks for the report. What a blast on the drys. When you move to alaska better buy a 7wt or 8 wt. To handel those salmon size rainbows. Good luck...

good job at SAR I love that place. Espescially because you don't have to go far to get away from everyone else.

Yeah, I hear you on that. My old 7 wt broke, and now the grip and reel seat is part of my 4.5 footer. I'll definitely have to pick up something a bit tougher for up there. Those salmon get pretty big too, he he he.

-Skyler Hey skyler if you can Pm for some good locations on stream fishing. I am in the Apple Valley area and would rather stream search than hit the busy lakes this weekend. It will be strictly Catch and release. I wont give up any spots to lurkers my lips are sealed.

Hey, Matt. I've always dreamed of living in Alaska. I hate the heat, I hate the traffic, I hate the concentration of people and their cynical attitudes, and I hate the way Socal stacks their priorities. I hate getting hassled by cops while out hunting, I hate dirtbikers and lake lice almost running me down while I'm trying to find peace and quiet. I hate that there is no peace and quiet anyways. I hate city life in general, and all I want to do is get away from it. That's why all I do is hike, fish, and hunt. I've come to terms with the fact that I was born in the wrong state, and I'd like to be where I need to be before my midlife crisis kicks in, lol. We have been stuck here in San Bernardino for too long now, and all of our friends and family have already moved out of state. There isn't much left here for us. So next year after my 30th birthday, we are heading up to the land of the midnight sun. We have already had WAY better job offers up there, the quality of life is far better for our daughter, and the state will actually pay US taxes (about $9,000 a year for our small family).

I'll make sure to bring some limes, orange juice, soy sauce, and chili powder with me, he he he. Not to mention plenty of Tapatio. I'm pretty sure they don't know what proper Mexican food is up there. Maybe I'll open a Caribou taco truck, he he he he..

Skyler sounds like you are moving for all the right reasons! I have a place out in West Texas on a lake about 10 miles from a paved road. It's good to get out there a few times a year and escape the SoCal madness. I understand all of your feelings. Best wishes on your move and hope it is everything and more than you had hoped for!! I've heard great things about Alaska for the outdoorsmen types.

I have fished Alaska and if you ever want to go after Kings (Chinook) you might want to look into a 10 to 12 wt. an 8 will do O.K. for silvers and reds. The bows I have fought on as small as a 5 wt but it was marginal at best on the big ones.

Thanks, guys. I figure it's about time for a change anyways. The largest city in Alaska is about the same size as the city I was born and raised in (San Bernardino), plus to date, there still aren't even a million citizens in the entire state. If there was ever a polar opposite to Socal, this is it, he he.

Jkitz, send me a PM and maybe we can meet up one of these days. I'd be more than happy to show him a few tips and tricks. Fishing smaller/faster pocket water like the drainages around here takes a bit different approach than working larger rivers.

Look for a new fly fishing report tommorow night, guys. Let's just say I had fun yesterday, he he he. Tight lines.
