Good afternoon,
Well, after talking to Liteliner on Saturday, I was planning to go with him for an early Castaic swim bait mission Sunday morning. I went to Turners to get a BBZ lavender slow sink shad, which of course, they didn’t have, so I got a Castaic swimmy. Left Turners, to find a text from Liteliner saying that he might hit BBL tonight instead. Grrr….ok….I just figured I would go solo then.
On Saturday, the Native Sun, once again, had a excellent bite on calicos and sand bass up the line, so I was torn all night whether to still hit Castaic, or to jump on the Native Sunday and fish SW bass. After work, I was up till about midnight trying to decide, when I finally decided to jump on the Native Sun and take advantage of the SW bass bite.
Woke up early Sunday morning, earlier than I was planning, I couldn’t sleep as usual. So I got up, got my gear ready, packed the truck, and went to the landing to hang out before the boat was scheduled to depart at 7 am. The key word being “was,” because at 645 am, the Native Sun had some mechanical problems, and was not going to be able to run that morning. Grrrrrr!! Now I was left with 2 options. The first being go home, switch out my gear, and head to one of the lakes. The second was to just hang out and go on the Icon ˝ day departing at 9 am. The only downside was that I knew the Icon was not going to be able to go up the line and fish bass, due to it being only a ˝ Day trip. It took awhile, but I finally decided that I was just going to go on the Icon, wouldn’t have been worth it for me to go all the way back down to HB, switch out gear, then head BACK up North. Id say about 20 of the 25 people that were originally scheduled on the Native Sun also decided to just hang out, and go on the Icon.
We left the dock promptly at 9 am, Shawn made his safety speech, along with letting us know the day’s game plan. We would start out in about 200 feet of water way outside for sculpin and dabs, and then we would move into Horseshoe kelp to search for bass and possibly a few barracuda. First we had to get bait, and then we would head outside.
Crew today was Capt Shawn, Mary in the galley, with Pete, Sean, and Matt on the deck. Nice, plenty of crew today to help the 35 anglers on the boat.
I set up with an 8 oz torpedo, two lead heads with a green Mogambo slid onto each one, a swivel, and 25 lb test. Just an FYI, u have a better chance at getting the larger sculpin when you attach a large plastic to your lead heads.
Arrived at the spot, dropped the anchor, and started fishing. The action was pretty consistent, with Sculpin and dabs coming over the rail at a decent pace. The only problem was, there were a LOT of short sculpin, so you had to pick thru the smaller ones to get the larger ones. Quite a few of the dabs were actually pretty large too. I fished next to Rudy, Shawn’s younger son most of the morning, and we slowly picked away to get limits for everyone on the larger sculpin, with the dabs mixed in to round out the sacks with some nice dinner fish. At around noon, Shawn said we were done with these and would move into the Horseshoe to fish other species.
By the time we arrived at the Shoe, everyone that wanted lunch had eaten. We fished about 3-4 spots inside for a few bass, and even ended up with a few legal lings on the past spot. Nothing huge, just over legals.
My count for the day was a limit of FAT sculpin, and about 30 dabs. I didn’t get one of the few bass caught today, I was throwing my iron in hopes of hooking a barracuda, which never happened, but I tried.
Decent day, but I can NOT wait till surface action picks up, I think I may not hit the Salt, at least on a boat, till that happens, I am rockfished and sculpined out, lol….thanks for reading!!!
