Personally, for about $50 more I would buy the 16000F size Shimano Thunnus. ( http://www.tackledirect.com/tu16000f.html )

It at least gives you the flexibility on a spinning reel to flyline a live bait (especially if all you got are those middle of the summer tiny chovies for bait which are hard to fling out with a conventional) much better than the Spheros (which lacks a baitrunner feature). I've owned / fished them for a long time now, and they are solid reels that hold up to pretty much any tuna / YT the local scene can throw at it. I can't say the same of other spinners I've owned (gear stripping issues, insufficient drag or sticky drag when buttoned down, quick corrosion after 1 season, body/bail warping after bringing just a few longfin, etc...). Keep in mind I've never owned a Spheros....I just think for a few bucks more you gain a little more versatility.

As far as the Megabaits, they work. But like anything, they have their time and place. I kinda like fishing them on the slide on those pick bites when the tuna dive right back down after a single jig strike. They get down quicker than a leadhead & plastic. I see other guys do well twitching them (as opposed to burning them in) for YT at paddy stops.

Just my 2 cents on what works for me.

Thank you very much. I will defenately consider your recommendation. Thats the type of input im looking for. What do you think of the rod?

Wow 60 bucks for that jig box of megabaits.... pretty pricey. Check some of the tackle shops, I remember seeing them at Charkbait and Baja Fish Gear and a few other places for a WHOLE lot less.

Personally, I wouldn't buy the kit either. IMO there are some colors and sizes that work really well and other's that haven't worked as well.

Anyone else care so share their input?
If it makes a difference. I do own a baitrunner 6500 already.

Thanks

Those Megabait jigs are awesome....but like RR said...its only certain colors. Ive ordered from extreme lures before and the price individually on that site is the same as they would cost at a tackle shop. The black and silver pattern has caught me barracuda, bonito, sandbass, calico bass, sheephead, sculpin....pretty versatile little jigs...

Thanks victor. Yah I saw a guy catching one after another. I bought 1 from tackle shop but not holographic and paid a quarter what I see using some on boat and on surf

For me I have a variety of setups I have some reels like the one your looking at. And unfortunately for me I went to San Diego on 3/4 day trip recently and I ended up having to rent a conventional rod and reel. After hitting limits on the rockfish and whitefish I was sold on getting a conventional reel. Since then I have purchased two Penn 320GT2, 1 Penn 230GTO, and 1shimano corvalus cvl 400 (baitcast reel)

Shimano corvalus cvl 400

Poles for the Penn 320GT2 (Walmart has these for $29.99 right now)

On my Penn 230GTO I am using

Shimano corvalus cvl 400 is on a

I hope this helps. I am going back to fish San Diego this coming up weekend so I will let you know how these setups hold up.
