I woke up today and noticed that the low tide today occured right during the gap between psychology and physics...poking it was! and it was a good choice too because i finally ended up with some sort of results!!!! I caught 1 large monkey face, 2 small cabs, and 1 gobey-looking fish. I also learned today that barnacles are sharp. I think i am finally learning what bites feel like when poke-poling.

monkey-faced eel, released after i took the picture

So....i guess i dont get it. Is this the sport of scrambling around on rocks and sticking your arm in dark holes, like noodling? Just trying to figure this one out. Thats an aweseome fish though!

What he did was got a PVC pipe, attached a coat hanger to it and on the CURVE of the coat hanger(the part you use to hang) he attached a short fishing line with a hook attached to it and you place the line and hook in small crevices during low tide in very rocky areas and as soon as you feel something you pull on on the "rod" and pull out all sorts of crap. There are pictures from another forum of LINGS! being pulled out.

Thats not entirely true. The duck pond has carp in it, and I may or may not have taken a pen rod and bread from the salad bar to the duck pond after a late night physics lab and gone carpin.

So for the Eels do you cut the line or unhook the them?

I've never hear of "poking" style fishing... but I must admit, it look pretty interesting. Nice job.

Strangely enough they sell those rod pens at Bed Bath and Beyond. Funny thing is I attented Cal Poly for couple years and had NO CLUE that the PUDD was right off the 57:Bawling:

I read about poke poling in a book one time, but never saw anyone doing it though. You're the first.

Dayamn that is an ugly fish, but a fish nonetheless. Good job!

Im sure rusty 6's will be different, probably made of bamboo and fence wire. I made a collapsible one out of PVC, some couplers, and a rod blank. I will lay mine out:

1. I took two 5 foot lengths of 1/2 inch pvc pipe, and put a male threaded coupler on one length, and a female threaded coupler on the other:

2. Then I took another female threaded coupler and put it on the other end of one of the PVC pipes. Then I took a bare rod blank, and glued up a male threaded couplerto the bottom of it:

http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/1979/dscf0210.th.jpg (http://img512.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf0210.jpg)

3: I glued a tip top on the end of the rod blank.
http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/162/dscf0211.th.jpg (http://img136.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscf0211.jpg)

4. After everything dries, you can screw all the parts together, and you have yourself a collapsible poke pole.

Then what you do is take a 2/0 hook, tie it up to the tip top using 30 lb test or more. You can probably use pre made snelled hooks. Bait the hook with squid strips. Then during low tide you stick the snell and pole into rock fissures, or under jetty rocks looking for stranded rockfish or eels. Unfortunately here in socal the fishing isnt nearly as good as central and norcal. Im still trying to get my first poke pole fish. I know the routine, but never got a fish yet.

Thats about it.

actually mine looks like that. its a 9 foot peice of pvc capped at both ends. i then drilled a hole into one of the caps and stuck in 1/8 inch steel wire, leaving about 2 feet out. 3 inches of 40 lb test with a size 4 hook. i was using a 2/0 but it turned out to be a little bit too big. it wasn't til i changed to the size 4 that i caught fish
