Good evening everyone,
I am EXHAUSTED, so im going to make this a short one everyone…sorry!
Well, after much anticipation about the Icon charter , and after much preparation, Sunday finally arrived.
My wife and I arrived at the landing earlier than normal to set up a “Congratulations” banner on the Icon congratulating my niece and her new husband Chris on their recent marriage. Once we set that up, went up to the landing to start greeting people for our charter, and to finish some last minute preparations. Today we had an all-star line-up consisting of:
Ghetto Dad
2. Shelley Phelps (my wife)
3. Michelle T. (my niece)
4. Chris T. (niece's husband)
5. Victor101
6. Ron T. (brother in law)
7. Tammy T. (my sister)
8. Chrystal B. (my niece)
9. Chrystal’s Friend
10. Jason T. (nephew)
11. Bruce Watson
12. O. F. G!!!
13. Bassin Chef
14. Hakavelli
15. Really Drunk
16. Osiito
17. KaliDawg
18. G$
19. Grandpa Fish
20. Granny Fish
21. Joe Romero
22. P*** Erick
23. David E’s Homie
24. Bucket Bay
25. Odium
26. The Coach!
Shawn called us down to the boat at 6:50 a.m., and we left the dock promptly at 7 a.m. Shawn made his morning safety speech, and then he informed us that we had some live squid and sardines already on the boat, so there was no need to even stop at the receiver. He also informed us we were going outside and fish sculpin in the morning, then inside in the afternoon. While motoring through the harbor, Shawn called me up to the wheelhouse and told me he was thinking about going up to Rocky Point, and said that he thought we would have a better chance at quality reds, rockfish, and sheephead. He asked what I thought, and I replied I totally trust his decision, and to do what he feels would be the best location for my people. After much thought, he decided on making the 2 hour run up to Rocky Point so that we would have a better shot at more quality rockfish. So we all set up our gear, ordered breakfast, and sat back for the long run.
Once we got around Point Fermin, the swells were getting fairly large. The farther West we went, the larger the swells got. This was not good for a few of the people, and my sister ended up getting seasick. Once we made the turn up at Point Vincente, the swells did eventually lay down. Not fully, but much better than the ride up there.
We fished anywhere from 180-240 feet all morning. Every spot Shawn fished, the meter was LOADED with fish…Reds and Grouper! Unfortunatley, the meter was also LOADED with bait, which made for a very slow day of fishing. Also, the conditions were horrible, SE all day, ripping uphill current, etch. Shawn must have moved that boat 20 times, and he was getting very frustrated at the lack of quantity and quality of the rockfish in this area. So he decided to make a run inside early in the afternoon, and fish some inside spots on the way home.
We did pick a few nicer quality rockfish throughout the day, and I apologive for not taking more pics of everyone, and not spending as much time with people as they are used to spending when we fish together. I was spending time with my wife today, which we needed to do. I did my best to socialize with everyone……
First inside spot was probably around 50 feet, and it produced one nice Sheephead for Mr Velli, and some more smaller rockfish. We fished two more spots down the line, and Shawn finally decided to call it a day.
On the way home, they weighed up jackpot, and lil homie Odium got JP with a nice Vic Grouper, it was his FIRST jp!! Way to go and great job man!! On a side note, I would like to thank him for his generosity, he turned around and gave the crew the ENTIRE JP back, which myself and the crew greatly appreciated, that was very nice of you man.
All in all, despite the lack of fish, I had a great time with everyone. Had some new and old faces on the boat, and my wife finally got to use her new rods today! My neice and Chris had a great time, and now they are on their way to Jamaicca for their honey moon. Not a bad day for them, huh??? Lol…..
Again, thanks everyone for attending, I am sorry about the slow fishing, but like I had told someone on the boat earlier, without slow days, you wouldn’t know what good days are. Have a great week everyone, and heres a few pic…sorry, I am not doing my usual “typing” above every picture, I’m tired……
