I have caught quite a few of these on the cattle boats and the deckhands always call them tomcods. Supposedly they have a high mercury content so eating them should be limited.

White croaker aka tomcod. EPA says not to eat them because of the high levels of mercury/DDT and other contaminants

Alright thx, And no, I never ate these fish. They dont look very tasty so its just catch and release with these guys. They dont even put up a fight. They swallow the hook and just call it quits.

Also one more question. WHat kind of fish is this one? I cought 2 or 3 of these at Ventura Harbor also.

Yup tomcod and staghorn sculpin. If you catch some smaller models of tomcod, that is ome very decent brown bait for our bigger predatory fish out here

Long beach has a boat that run a 1/4 day tomcod special. Sometimes they get halibuts on the surface on iron on those trips. ;)

Ya, I've caught sting rays/bat rays with the anchovies and squid at Ventura Harbor. There really fun fish to catch and give a good fight. I put bigger hooks so i wont get any of those small fish on, but some how those things manage to swallow my hooks. Its really annoying taking out big hooks out of those small fish. Some times its just supriseing of how they manage to swallow such big hooks.

When you put a big pice of mack on there you might get a few taps from them but they wont eat it it will be to big then wait for a big ray. Good luck
