Dude - if you're soakin off of that public dock by the beach launching spot near the Bay park, it's FO SHO a ray. My buddy and I fish there ALL the time and we can get 10-30 rays a night off that dock.

Haha funny video, I was waiting for that rod to snap. I would have been so pissed if you snapped a rod over a friggen ray!

Haha good fight while it lasted.

I got spooled in NPH once... it was fun. Hate that helpless feeling when you know that your gear is overmatched.

Nick,

Thanks for the vid as it brought back memories of the recent past before I got my boat.

Here is something all of you shorebound folks can try when hooked into a bigger Ray that is trying to spool you.

Once hooked they are going to make a quick run for it and as the line is ripping of your spool just put it in free spool and point the rod tip in the direction of the fish.

Once they feel no resistance they will usually turn for the deeper water or back into the channel instead of trying to leave the harbor.

After they make this move re-engage and put the pressure on and turn them back in your direction. You will have to reel like no tomorrow as they will be coming toward you and then they will usually do the same in the senario in the other direction!

It will take a while but with some luck you will tire them out and get to take the photo!

I learned this after keeping the pressure on many a times and lost alot of line!

Good luck!

My best is a 40+ lb on 10 lb line!

It really works!!

large smoothhounds also come in really close to that area this time of the year too, so thats also a possibility!
