Headed up to the Havasu for a week of staying with one of my best friends, doing some fishing, taking out the new boat, taking the dog out for her first big outting and boat ride, and doing some serious relaxing/drinking.
Got there on Monday afternoon and promptly headed out with my buddy to hit up some bass. We Managed 15-18 LMB and SMB in a mix of the river and lake on many of his pieces of structure he knows as well as backwaters in the river. Baits of choice were Tubes, Senkos, and some Dropshotting. We went out Tuesday to much cold and wind in my new boat. Headed up the river to try to get the boys on some of the nice red ear fishing that is to be had up there but it built up to 30mph gusting to 40+. Stayed for a few hours, managed a nice LMB and then rode home in 3-4ft swells. The new boat did wonderfully. Thank god I wasnt in the green machine (16ftr).
Wednesday was colder and windier and caused a day of running errands and taking the kids to the movies. Took the boys out Thursday A.M. for our second day of striper hunting which also yielded not a single lineside bite. Ended up catching a crappie which I was told is a very rare catch there and one gentlemen said he hasnt seen one in many many years. It was CPR'd. Also managed a SMB. Went out Thursday p.m. with my buddy back to the river for some SMB and LMB fishing with my son. He has been practicing with his new casting reel and was ready to try it on his own. He manaaged 3 fish - 2 SMB 1 LMB all on his own with a Senko. He cast it right up tight to the cover, felt the strike, set the hook and landed the fish all on his own. Not bad for a 10yo. (One Proud Papa) We managed around another 12-15 mixed bag of LMB and SMB. Headed out Friday with the dog and she had a blast, jumped off the boat twice and went for a swim. Went back down south lookin for Mr Stripey again for no love. Looked in lots of back waters/Habitats and very little activity. It was nice out but the fish down south didnt want to play. Saturday a.m. came and finally got a break in the weather. Ran the kids up the river to a backwater we had seen some nice Red Ear activity in and it went WFO. The kids managed over 15 really nice redear in 2 hours. Then it was time to head home, clean fish, watch the weigh in of my buddies tournament and head for home. It was a great trip with lots of fish landed but had we gone this week with the hotter weather, it wudda been WFO Im pretty sure.
