Yesterday I went out with four other friends to Ventura. We were coming from the Pasadena area so it was quite a drive. We were hoping to catch some quality rockfish. The boat was the Pacific Islander (1/2 day) out of Channel Island Sportfishing Center. It was an absolutely beautiful day to be on the water: Clear skies and great weather. We went 1hr 30mins north to get to the rockfishing grounds. Along the way I ate a breakfast burrito, which was okay. I've definitely had better.
When we got there, we hooked into the Bocaccios. Everybody limited on them in about 40 minutes. I caught a legal lingcod on that stop on a sardine. I also caught a fairly big bocaccio as well.
We then set up several drifts over areas with rockfish, and caught an assortment of them. Many of them were on the smaller size. I caught a decent Sculpin, along with a bunch of rockfish and sand dabs. If you knew what you were doing you pretty much would have caught on every drop. We were fishing between 200 and 300 feet. At the end of the day we set up some more drifts and got more fish; I got tired and caught a double cheeseburger.
The boat was spacious in the back with narrow walk ways along the side. The deck hands were awesome. I have not been fishing too long, but I have never seen deck hands work so well together. They untangled lines so quickly, took care of our fish, and pretty much were always visible and willing to help or give tips. Overall, the trip to Ventura was worth it. The quality of fish and service was great.
