So...I let Skaguy talk me into hitting the river above Johnsondale. Actually he gave me other options, but I've been wanting to go up there for years, so we did.
We left town about 9:30 a.m. and headed on up. After a stop at the store and the hatchery, I believe we got to the bridge about 11:00. He had some spots in mind and we hiked in.
Looking at a Google map today, I think we were about two miles up the trail. The first spot was where Dry Meadow Creek dumps into the river. I was throwing a Rapala trout pattern CD, I believe 3. Sergio was throwing a similar plug in a color he'll have to divulge. I think I caught one at this spot :-/
We moved up river a bit and I changed over to a white crappie jig. I quickly lost it and changed to a #2 Panther Martin in a rainbow trout pattern. You should be able to see it in the pics when Sergio posts the pics.
We moved to a couple different spots up the river. I ended up with four and Sergio...zero. I lost a couple. One of which I'm pretty sure was a brown.
You could see fish occasionally and we got quite a few followers. None of the fish were very big, but the fact that they're wild makes up for that fact.
All the fish seemed to be in deeper eddy's and slow water and were hitting close to the bottom on slower retrieves. I did have one on for a second in the skinny water on the PM.
I got one on the Rapala and lost the suspected brown on the same. All the others were on the PM and all the follows were on the same. Sergio also got a lot of follows on PM's.
Pretty good day and a cool adventure. I'm sore as heck today as well. This type of trip is surely for someone that is in a little better condition physically for sure. And would probably be better if you aren't pressed for time as we were.
We'll have to wait for Sergio to kick with the pics. Come on Serg, roll that beautiful bean footage.
