With the shad spawn right around the corner I had a friend do some custom painting on some crankbaits for my summer night tourneys that I have coming. I gave him a picture to work from and...WOW! I gave him 2 Xcalibur Knockers, a Bandit 100 series and 2 Lucky Crafts.

I got the crankbaits from him today and I'm so impressed with his work that I thought I would share with you guys. I know this kind of work is old news but I'm amazed at how well he worked from the pic I gave him!

I cant see the link Dark cuz Im in my classroom and our filter blocks it but the guy who did these is Bob Risner of BER custom. I didnt want to mention his name because he gets overwhelmed with work. Hes one hell of a smallmouth fisherman though.

those xcaliburs and the LV 500 look sick. i'd die if i lost one, but i'd have a lot of confidence throwing something that close to the real deal. i'd silence the rattles before i gave him mine. beautiful work, your guy too DS. megabait?

How can you silence rattles in a crankbait? Can that be done without destroying the crankbait?

From my experience, no. You won't completely destroy the bait, but you
have to drill a few strategic holes and pop the little BB's out. What class
do you teach?

I teach 4 sections of biology and one section of ecology.

i'll take some step by step pics and post something up. i've done it to cranks, traps, hard jerkbaits, spook type topwaters, you just have to think a little bit before you go drilling and gluing willy nilly. normans are real easy to do. i don't remove any of the weights, just glue them in place so they don't bounce around in their chambers. sammy's are way better after surgery, they don't float straight up and down like the ones from the factory. traps don't sound like underwater maracas when you tug em. in clear water me no likey rattles.

Get an air card and bring your laptop to work. That's how I do it. Where do you teach?

I've blocked a lot of web content here, so some of the employees here use some web surfing proxies to circumvent the blocked website content. You might want to give that a try

Hey, don't be affraid to ask the guys over in IT to open the door for photobucket. They have that control...and unless there is black and white policy prohibiting...they just might crack the door for you. It helps a little if you can find a legitimate academic purpose for it as well.

IT guy at another school.

i said i'd mention something about silencing the rattles in crankbaits and other hardbaits. the biggest problem is finding the chambers that the rattles are contained in, and drilling the hole in the right place. here's a pic that shows pretty well where the balls are going to be located in most crankbaits (somewhere in the belly, in the front half of the body).
http://www.predatorbassbaits.com/id96.htm

normans are maybe the best b/c both balls are in their own fixed chamber. some baits have the ball just loose in the center of the bait so that it can go to the tail when you cast. on these baits, you can still silence them by pinning that weight to a fixed spot, right behind the bill, in front of the belly hook, but you lose casting distance (the Flat CB series of lucky crafts are like this).

after drilling you're holes, one per rattle/ball, i just make sure the ball is in the center of the chamber and drip gorilla glue in the hole and let that set up (the GG expands in the hole and some excess may come out-wipe away). i then re-drill the hole slightly so there's no glue blocking the plastic, and i use surfboard UV cure resin (for fixing dings-any surfshop's got it- could use epoxy too) to seal the hole and sand flat. the norman's and fat free shads are probably my favorite ones in that they're real easy to do.
