Took my kids, Rafa, Carlitos, and Neighbor Berlin out for a day of rock fishing.

Left my house around 7 and went to South shores ramp (If you are planning to go out this weekend, avoid south shores, the Toyota car race will be going out and the ramp is being used to park the big rigs.)

Launched and headed for the two sisters oil rigs. Once we got there we saw one cattle boat working the area. Well, the swells were HUGE and the current was ripping. Called it quits after two drifts. We using 8 oz and we were not able to hold bottoms so we headed for the 150 area. Current and swells were the same there so we packed it up and went to the Horseshoe kelp. No love there either, so we went to fish the wall by the LA lighthouse. The water was very dirty and it felt like we were in a washing machine. Swells and water was moving in every direction.

We decided to try the Long Beach end of the wall and the water was a lot cleaner. As soon as we dropped our lines, the perch were attacking our bait. It was nice to get nibbles! Too advantage of the fish bites and I set up the little bass rods for the fish to use. I put a small size 4 hook and 1 oz weight on a drop shot set up using 12 lbs test, gave it to Brendan(6 years old.) Travis (5 years old) was using an old spinning Diawa reel with similar set up and dropped it down.

Travis was the first to hook and bring up a fish. Here he is with his 10" Calico. He was a bit bummed because he had to release it.

Soon after, Brendan brought up a small perch. Then he casted out on his own and worked the bait all by himself. Then he starts yelling that he has a fish. At first I thought he was stuck on kelp or the bottom and I was about the grab the rod to breaking off, when I saw the fish take off like a bat out of hell toward the deep sandy bottom. He continued to work the rod and reel like a pro. We could not believe our eyes when we saw what came up to the surface! We grabbed the net and landed this awesome 8 1/2 pound, 26 inch Cabezon. His personal best fish EVER! High fives all around and one proud PAPA!
