Luckily for me, my work gives us our birthday off. I thought about hitting up Skinner for some Stripers, but I couldn’t get a hold of AmpMan  But since the wife took the day off as well, I decided to travel out to Lake Cuyamaca instead (the family really likes going there). Got a late start (always happens when the family comes) and ended up getting to the lake around 11:30. On our way up we passed by a DFG stocking truck. This got me wondering if they were headed in the same direction, but as far as I knew only Jess Ranch was supposed to stock this week... We usually fish from the North Shore, but the little Ranger station was closed so we had to head to the other side to get our permits. Once there, we decided to go ahead and set up camp to the left of the launch ramp to see how fishing on that side of the lake was. Before I could finish setting up and get a pole in the water, guess what shows up?

What a great birthday present! First time I’ve seen a lake get stocked before. I watched the fish get poured into the lake before I headed back to my spot and tossed out a line with some PB on it. Within 5 minutes I was reeling in my first fish of the day. For the next two hours or so we were catching or farming a fish every 10 minutes or so. For the most part we only kept 2 lines in the water (out of a possible 7, wife doesn't have a 2nd rod stamp). About an hour after the DFG finished stocking, the Jess Ranch truck stopped by to stock some more! This is a catch and keep lake, so we tried to keep most of our catches, but some of the smaller ones were a little too slippery and got away. The wife and kids were actually getting a little bored of this because they wanted to catch bullheads. So, after lunch we headed to the North side were we had good luck catching the bullheads. Ended up catching a couple of trout over there as well as a bullhead. While the family was trying their luck with the bullheads I headed over to the pier with a power nymph. I had a fish on about every other cast. Only one worth keeping, the others slipped off before I could get them into my basket.
Overall had a great day. Many fish caught, 12 trout kept and 1 bullhead. Most were caught on PB, bullhead on a NC, and about 4 kept trouts on the power nymph all setups using 4lb test. Wind was blowing most of the time, which made it colder and hard to cast. Water level was higher than I’m used to seeing, but muddy looking as always. Hoping to get out there next month when it warms up a bit and the bullheads will be out.
