Got a couple lings, couple boccaccio, red, and a couple large sandabs. Not sure what #8 was though. ~20", shaped like a bass, no swim bladder, no bulging eyes (brought up from about 268'), scales were larger and firm. Didn't match anything on my "no possess" list so I kept it. Anyone care to enlighten me?

Was thinging Olive, but much bigger mouth than a Belinda or Widow... No yellow on this sucker, and the scales are thowing me off. BTW - since this is in the report section: Groupers and larger ling were a couple miles of kings harbor (tripple hookup off first drift). Blue ling and others were off south banks.

It does look like a Johnny Bass aka Olive rockfish aka Yellowtail rockfish.
Although these names a commonly interchangeable, some scientist have
declared Olive rockfish and Yellowtail rockfish to be different species.

I don't really care. They taste the same to me...good!!!

Olive Rockfish aka Johnny Bass aka Saltwater Smallie aka Johnathon aka Sebastes Serranoides (serranoides is a combination of Latin and Greek and means "resembling a bass")

Hope this helps.

Definately a Johnny bass. They are the "Calico bass" of rockfish as they can often be found in kelp forest areas boiling on bait. They eat plastics well and love to eat a fast wind yo-yo heavy jig.
