Bones (Mike) and I went on a Northern recon mission today. Hit up a few spots that we have never been to before and also stopped by a few familiar areas to see if the Halibut have made their showing yet. Fishing wasn't great today, just a few short Flatties, but we did learn a lot and found some spots that has great potential when the time is right. :Secret:

The weather was just about perfect today. The conditions was also very good. Excellent water clarity in most areas and the water temperature is almost right. Just a matter of time until the Spring Halibut bite goes into full swing. We had a great time today, not only fishing, but enjoying the outdoors and what nature has to offer... life was everywhere you look.

I hope that I can make up for the lack of fish porn by sharing some of God's gifts in the form of Mother Nature pics.

First stop, this place has great potential, we just came on the wrong day. There was some kind of surfing competition going on and we didn't stay very long.

Kinda hard to fish with these guys everywhere.

Then off to the one of our regular stomping grounds. This is the only place that produced fish today. Met a FNN member out there... I think his screen name is Carpinator, thanks for introducing yourself, very nice to meet you.

Mike, thanks again for joining me on this recon mission, it was another great work out wasn't it? We covered a lot of ground on foot today. We discovered a few new things to put away in the old memory banks. The fishing wasn't great but as you put it "We're paying our dues..."

Until our roads cross again... take care everybody.

Always a pleasure to do some recon with you Arthur. We fished a variety of areas and conditions today. Too bad that we had to bail out of the northern area because of the high wind gusts and the wind swell and take refuge in the harbors again but things will calm down in a few weeks and the spring pattern will set in. I'm glad we are on top of it this year and by the way it looks........Good things are just around the corner. Yeah.......I actually prefer the sand stomping compared to the rock hopping and I'm a little sore today but I consider it all PRE-Conditioning for the real (SWAT) assaults to come....LOL
Next time throw in a few pics of all of the coppertone mermaids we saw today........Gotta love socal in the spring!

You guys have a lot of patience and stamina to do recon missions. A lot of people, myself included tend to hit up only usual and familiar spots that we know can produce. Taking a chance on completely new locations is out of the comfort zone but is necessary if you want to broaden your horizon. I guess if you never go, you never know.

Nice job guys. Art, I'll see you Saturday night for the poker party. I'm on the bubble with two more tournaments to go. Time to get some points, I want to go to Vegas with you guys comes July!

I was in waders earlier that morning, but it was so nice and warm later that I couldn't resist getting my feet wet. Wearing waders do help you stay more comfortable and allows you to stay in the surf longer.
The golf tournament was fun. It's only once a year so I justified taking the day off.

wow!!! those are some beautiful picture of mother nature at its best....those spots you fished at look very nice and should be loaded with fish when the time is right
The right time is just around the corner Seng. You need to pry yourself away from the panfish bite to hit the surf bro.

Very nice.... Actually you are in one of my favorite spots :)
Why... because it has YFC's?!?

Hey Mike, I don't mind putting some extra work right now for a big payoff later. :Secret: Always fun to hit the surf with you buddy. I forgot to tell everybody that you almost caught a Cormorant too!
Yes, I LOVE surf fishing in warmer weather in So. Cal. Ahhh yes... the Mermaid triplets we saw sunning themselves on the beach... I think that was when you got that major backlash.

The weirdest thing that happened to me on Sunday was getting squirted by something in the sand as I was walking. I'm still wondering what the heck it is?!? Does anybody know the explanation for this? I was walking along a stretch of sand on the edge of the water in the harbor. All of the sudden a bunch of holes opened up in the sand and squirted me with jets of water of about a foot high or so. I was hopping around it and wherever I would step, more holes would open up and kept squirting me. It was the weirdest thing. We thought that it might be clams, but I dug down about a foot deep at the holes and found nothing. Does anyone know what this is? Maybe it's Poseidon messing with me again.

Beautiful pics!

Unfortunately, the hook sets was very few in between.
The drop off was pretty sudden and falls off about ten feet or so. We had a few Perch bites there, but nothing solid.

What a great looking day Art, you guys are certainly hardcore surf fishermen. Where do I apply for one of these Wingnut surf fishing bootcamps??? Nicely done gentlemen!
The weather was just about perfect Vince, only thing missing was a few more Flatties. The Wingnut Bootcamp is by invitation only, but I do have a reservation for you whenever you're ready.

Ouch! The spines on these things looks pretty sharp but I didn't squeeze the thing hard enough to find out.

Sometimes you have to do a little homework in order to get ahead of the curve Binh. A little discomfort sometimes does wonders for your comfort zone. "You never go... you never know..." I like that!
See ya Saturday, and good luck earning some points. I'm just about guaranteed a top three finish, so Vegas here I come!!!

"One of the hardest things to do in life is learning how to say "no" to the good, so you can say "yes" to the best." Easier said than done I can assure you.
I haven't been golfing much in the past year. I've been spending all my spare time fishing, not golfing and my game really fell apart. The first thing to suffer when you don't play regularly is the short game. I totally lost my touch with the chipping and putting and my handicap shot up quite a few strokes. Oh well, you can't have your cake and eat it too I guess. Maybe someday I'll be lucky enough to do both. I've always played with Callaway, I have some of their stocks so why not support the company right? I haven't played any of the courses at Stateline but most of the courses in and around Las Vegas including Badlands, Legacy, Paiute, TPC and Painted Desert. But my absolute favorite course to play in Vegas is where I usually stay, the Wynn's Golf Club. This is a magnificent golf course and considered to be the best in Vegas. Here are some pics of my buddy Phuong (Blackwater) and I playing there last year during the World Series of Poker Tournament.

I am a little late to this post, but awesome report as always. I was actually out in Ventura Harbor on Saturday (April 4th) in a float tube. I caught only one Sand Bass, and plenty of Yellow Fin Croaker (too many). Had a good time the bite was a bit slow at times. I missed many bites too. After talking to you about drop shot a few weeks back I decided to give it a try. That was the only way I caught anything. I am sold. First time I have ever used it in the ocean.
Thanks

I remember when you and Phuong took off to play that course last year. It was like 100 degrees outside! You guys invited Chris and I to play but it was kinda steep for a round of golf. :EyePop: But we should have played, we blew the money gambling. OMG, that putting green looks imaculate, not a flaw on that putting surface. I guess you do get what you pay for, how much did you have to tip the caddy? When we head to Vegas this year for the WSOP, I'm playing a round with you for sure, I've been saving up all year.

YFC's are fun to catch and great fighters, at least you got into some action. The dropshot will produce, just keep working it. As for dropshotting in the salt, I was hesitant to do it for the longest time. But as I learned through trial and error, and from watching some of the surf fishing veterans out there, that it can be extremely effective, especially in the winter months. The credit belongs to those who has been applying this technique in the salt long before I even hit the surf for the first time.

Yeah, it was hot that day. I remember the caddy told us that is was 105 degrees. I'd rather spend the money on a four hour round of golf and have a lasting memory than to lose it at the table in a matter of minutes. When we all go back up there this July, you have to play a round with us Binh, my treat. The putting greens were absolutely perfect. It was like putting on carpet. We had our own caddy, I felt like I was on the PGA tour, haha. The tip for the caddy was 15% of the cost of the round, pretty standard. See you soon!
