View Full Version : Lake Perris 4/4/09: Slow But Fun In The Sun *Pics*

Bassguy and I decided to hit up Perris. Instead of launching out of Sail Cove as usual, we wanted to try our luck at lots 11&12. It sure is a long walk down to the water now. LOL. This morning would be a little different though, as I had to wait almost 20min. to go through the vessel inspection. Believe Bassguy had to wait a little over 30min. After we had our rigs setup we were on the water at 8:30a.m.

The conditions for today was mostly clear, a slight breeze, and sunny. Water temps were 64*F in the morning and warmed up a little to 67*F this afternoon. Water clarity was heavily stained with 1-2ft. visibility. The wind did pick up a little at noon, but it was only for a moment. Then calming down to about 5-6mph. Sure made kicking tough though, haha.

Anyway, I started out with the Lucky Craft Pointer 78DD for a bit with no luck. Then switched it off by using a Jackall Flick Shake rigged wacky on a dropshot. A few casts in, and I’m on. It didn’t take too long to bring in a dink fish. Bassguy not to be outdone, ties on a Flick Shake as well and soon brings in a solid 3lb. 9oz. fish. He re-rigs and casts out again. A few casts later, he is on again and brings in a 2lb. fish. Not long after he releases it, I’m on again. This fish was an identical 3lb. 9oz. fish Bassguy released earlier. By this time we start joking, saying we are catching the same fish over and over. We stuck around the area for a little while longer with no more luck so we decided to kick to the other side of the cove. Decided to put the dropshot to the side and drag a brush hog on a C-rig. No luck with that.

As we reached our destination, we had to take a quick break so Bassguy could re-situate his sweatpants under his waders which were bunched up around his calf. We get back on the water and Bassguy gets on the phone. Not long after, he says “Wait, I got a fish!” The fish makes some nice jumps and I know it’s another solid fish. It gave him a good fight, until I stepped in and landed the chunky 4lb. bass for him. Nice! We fished as much of the shoreline as we can, but no more takers. Then the wind starts to kick up a bit and Bassguy develops a cramp in his leg. So, we decided to head back to our first spot in case the wind decides to really pick up.

I must not have been paying attention or something as I found myself heading over to the new launch ramp. While Bassguy was making a b-line to our destination. Oh well, I tried to make the best of it and decided to drag a 6” Robo Shaking Worm on a dropshot. With the wind making it difficult to kick and shore fishermen lined the banks, I was pretty much stuck to fishing the 15ft. depth. It turned out to be a good thing though as I managed to land two fish back to back weighing 3lbs 12oz and 3lbs 8oz., respectively. Eventually I made it back to our original spot. We had several bites, but no hookups. We continue to fish the area for nothing. It was about 2p.m. when I get a solid hit, I swing, and fish on. However, the fish jumps and spits out the hook. Oh well, you win some, you lose some. With not much happening, we called it a day at 3p.m. All fish other than my two fish caught in 15ft. of water were caught in 10ft. Of water or less. Enjoy some pics of the day.

Nice work out there guys. Hopefully they'll open lot 12 soon which will make the shorter(or at least easier). Looks like they are done or gave up with any more ramp extension and are clearing all the construction stuff out of there.

Can you go into more detail on the vessel inspections for the tubes and what they are checking. Are you waiting in one big line for everybody?

Seal had reported back from Silverwood that he was able to use the non boating line for tubes over there.

Dude thats major hardcore and your first time out even makes it more amazing. I do about 8 miles a week out there and I've never done a Dam run. I tried one time but gave up because theres no buoy line out there. I felt like I was kicking out on the freeway.

You should try the east end. After that Dam run a Island trip should be no problem for you.

SoCal,

It was abother great day on the water. Unfortunately my new waders seem to be causing some issues around my calf area, cutting off circulation.

As for the fishing, the weather was nice, just enough wind to make it difficult to stay in one place. The fish are getting more active, and definitely moving up.

Also, both Socal and I metered massive bait balls all day long. And the stomachs of all the fish caught are definitey fat.

You covered all the facts, I did miss one on Carolina rig, unfortunately I set the hook prematurely. I will post some pics I took, always a pleasure fishing with you, and glad I was able to get more than one fish today.

Seal had reported back from Silverwood that he was able to use the non boating line for tubes over there.

For the tubes, they just checked to make sure it's dry. They also have you fill up a form (same form given to boats) asking questions like when was it used last, what body of water, etc. Unfortunately, yes you have to wait in the same line as the boats. There wasn't much boats in front of me waiting to get inspected so it took me about 15-20min. to get through the gate. After we got off the water, we had to go to launch ramp 6, where they inspected our float tubes again to make sure they were dry. Again, had to fill up a form, then we were given a tag to put on our tube so we won't have to go through the inspection the next visit.

Ahh, the essence of youth. I've done the dam run many moons ago and vowed never to do it again. The farthest I'd go for a bite now is from lots 11/12 to the island. Hope to see you out there sometime.

Thanks man. Yeah, he's stepping up his game. There's nothing more to show him now. LOL.

How do you like it? Have you tried other brands? What else did you have to purchase to complete installation?

Yep, that's the one and Bass Pro is where I bought it from. This was an upgrade from the X96. Nothing wrong with the X96, just wanted to see what all the hype about color was. I've used it three times and absolutely love it.

I wouldn't call these complaints because they are minor, but: 1) water spots can get annoying to wipe off and 2) Depth reading flashes 60ft. if you first power it on in less than 10ft. of water or the depth reading flashes the last depth you were in if you go shallower than 10ft of water. Again, these are just minor things I've encountered. The water spots don't affect anything, but they can be annoying to see. If you clean the screen with soap and water after each outing, then you'll be fine. As for the flashing depth, I just turn the unit off if I'm fishing in water less than 10ft. I usually do anyway because at 10ft. you're only seeing about 3ft. of the bottom and even less of the water column.

No, I haven't tried any other brands. Seems like I always find myself going between Humminbird and Lowrance when buying a fishfinder. LOL. But my first finder was a Lowrance and majority of the people I know use Lowrance units and love them.

It comes complete in the box. Finder, power cable, transducer, and mounting hardware are all included. The only thing you might want to add is a RAM mount. Which, I already had one when I installed the X96.

Yeah, I still have the X96. Unfortunately, the transducer/power cable is still attached to the current fishfinder mount. Dopey me glued all the PVC in place. LOL. What kind of tube you got? I'll most likely have to make a new rod holder/fish finder mount for the X510C. So I can sell the whole thing (minus the RAM mount) as a package. As for the finder itself, it still works great. It's just not color, LOL. I was thinking of using it on my next outing just to make sure.
