Ok , I just got my first few crappie and I did buy a new rod for Crappie Fishing. I got a Daiwa Spinomatic 7'. I really don't like the rod. I paid $ 31.00 plus tax. I did find a nice Gloomus 5'6 that is so SWEET . Its $ 280.00 I really don't want to pay that much for a Crappie Rod. The action on that rod in so good though. So, my question to you all Team Panfish people is, What is a great Crappie Rod I could buy that is not going to break me and I will like the action of it? Thanks for the replys

Personally for value, I love the spinmatic-x's, but the BPS Microlights are pretty good too. About $50 a pop.

Are there major differences between a trout rod and a crappie rod?

Not really DS. I just like to have rods for different fish species.

Is a 5 ' rod better than a 6'6'' or 7 ' rod for crappie fishing? I plan on fishing from boats for crappie.

I think the best rod for crappie fishing is a 7' kencore. You want a rod with a very soft action. I know that sounds dirty, but it's true. They don't call crappie "paper mouths" for nothing. If you set the hook hard enough, you will only come up with the fishes mouth.

I did get to fish with my 6'6'' Kencor. I did good with it. I just want others opinions about different rods before I buy. Was thinking of the Kencor Purple wrap 5' or 5' 6'' .

Have a 3 or 4 weight fly rod custom wrapped for you. Phenix trout blanks are sweet too.

the 7' spinmatic is the best deal. For a crappie rod.

Patrick, The longer the rod the softer the hook set and the further you can cast the small Crappie jigs.... MHO for what its worth!!!
7' is about right. U/L Trout rod is perfect...

I have been hoping some one would get a new Berkley AMP rod and report on it, they have some great specs for light applications...
(right price for us cheap bastards also, $29)!!!!

Oh, you can have my 7' Spinmatic with brand new Daiwa Regal.... Its some where near the Old Boat ramp at Irvine Lake in 10' of water..

I'd go with a Phenix 701 for a nice 7' crappie rod. I have never used that specific model, but have used the 801 and 761 which are very similar. They are very sensitive and have a tip that is soft enough to avoid tearing out the hook. They also get very good distance with 1/32oz mini jigs, and you can get the 7' and 7'6" as 1 piece rods too.

If you don't mind short rods go the bass pro shops and purchase the Bill Dance Crappie series rod. The rod is a 5 foot model, very sensitive, strong, and only about $30.

i got a fx902-2 custom wrapped for shore fishing, if you fish from boat 6'6",7' or 7'6" will work
great, like bsp said phenix rods have sensitive soft tips it wouldn't tear paper mouth of crappie.

I bought the 7ft 2lb to 6lb light fast action micro at bps. There on sale for 35.00.normally 45.00 there ultra lite version was a little to whippy. The light is perfect ,for crappie jigs, and drop shotting for crappies. I now even use it for drop shotting bass. It has a perfect shake and not to whippy. I also bought the 8ftl med lite and 8.5 ft med lite version 4 lbto 8lb fast action. There nice rods for the price.

i saw a rod a bass pro shops. it was 12ft. "light" action with a baitcasting reel little bigger than my thumb! it was labeled "crappie rod" on the tag stapled to the side of it. a few people and i were making jokes that there is only enough line on the tiny reel to make it to the end of the rod.

If you are fishing on a boat, the 6 to 6 1/2 foot models are much more user friendly. Plus, when drifting, they are easier to watch for the subtle tick of them. Long rods are not an advantage, and when they come boatside, they are further away from you to lip. Ugly sticks work good, and are not expensive, plus can be used for red ears, and bass. My 2 cents
