Or should I say fishing out of Capt’n Hook’s on the Island Spirit
All I can say is that I had a great time fishing with my uncle Zack!
I left my house in Trabuco Canyon at 5:50 PM gassed up and hit the road. I made it to his house in Camarillo in just over 2 hours covering 109 miles in traffic, not too bad.
Uncle Zack promptly handed me a Pacifico and a plate of pasta. We chatted a bit and watched a fishing channel to prime us for our trip the next morning.
We got up early and left the house at 5 AM and got to Oxnard at 5:30AM, waited in line to pay up, and were onboard with 15 minutes to spare as the boat left on time at 6AM!
The Captain said the local fishing was slow so we were going to make a 3+ hour run to the west end of Santa Cruz. I’m like what the hell
I was shocked and elated at the same time
I always wanted to fish the outer islands, but that sort of ride is usually set for an overnighter thought I felt fortunate that we were going.
The ride over couldn’t have been better. It was mostly flat with a very small swell and it stayed like that all day long!

On the way to our destination we came across whale after whale. We were treated to seeing them breach, blow, and lift their tails out of the water. I managed a few good pic’s, but none of their tails.

At our first spot we came into a ton of blue bass. They were pretty pesty, but a few of them had some size to them. They were a comparison to the bank perch that always annoy us out of LB and Dana. There were only a handful of cricket size fish to bother us.

We caught & released so many of these guys.
Fishing was fantastic, but uncle Zack was turned out to be the blue bass king though he managed a few reds and a chuckle head.

This was the only pic that Zack would pose for….
Gopher cod (were plentiful and many were released, but not this one)

Double reds

One angry chuckle

The Captain decided to move in closer and fish shallower on the way in. The RF were a bit smaller but the whitefish and sheep head were now on the menu

This fish was caught by another angler who just would not take a pic with his fish. He said “you hold it for the camera” ……
Whatever…it was a nice fish!

I ended the day with:
3 chuckleheads
2 Reds
2 tree fish
2 Gopher cod (many released)
1 blue bass (many released)
2 white fish

All these fish were super healthy and were “stuffed to the gills” with food. I’m working with my father in law, uncle, and cousins to do an overnighter out to the Channel Islands when the WSB show up. Hopefully sooner than later.
FYI, I believe Anacapa is less 10 miles from the coast and is very doable for you boat owners, thought some parts are protected. I hear that Santa Cruz is 35 miles from the coast, meaning an hour to an hour and a half boat ride. Just something to think about especially for the guys who launch out of Point Loma and live in north OC. The road trip might be justified, the travel time is not much longer.
